Deale locator maps update
« on: July 16, 2018, 08:02:27 PM »

Let me start with saying I am a pc idiot. Now being done with that.

I have gone to H-D website found the dealer location software update. I downloaded it. It was in a zipped file. I unzipped it. Transferred the unzipped file to flash drive. Connected said flash drive to bike and every time screen says no playable media. I have done this probably 20 times being convinced I had done something wrong. So I quit before shooting up my pc and my info screen on bike.

So what am I doing wrong? I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks.

You need to wait longer. I did the update, got the no playable media warning (Boom box is looking for music first) Then it did the down load of the dealer info from the sub drive.

Generally that error message is caused because the file has been copied to the flash drive and is located in a sub folder. The file needs to be copied to the “root” level of the drive.

Instructions from HD website - don't unzip, just copy file to top directory of USB drive

2.   Download the latest software version from harley-davidson.com
       a.   Select "Download Software Update" for the appropriate system.
       b.   When prompted, save the compressed file to your computer desktop.
       c.   When the download is complete, copy the file within the zipped folder to the root directory (the first or
top most directory in a file system) of a USB flash drive that is 8 GB or larger.
       d.   Turn your vehicle's ignition switch to ACCESSORY. (Keyless ignition vehicles: press and hold the trip
switch for more than two seconds).
       e.   Turn on the audio system and connect the USB flash drive to the audio system's USB port.
       f.    The audio system will detect the new software available and ask if you want to update. Select “Yes”.
The display will prompt you to remove the USB drive when the update is complete.

Thank you very much for input. Sadly it doesn’t work as described and in my case doesn’t work at all.

Process works fine for general radio software update. But not for dealer POI updates. I tried 3 different PC’s, 4 different flash drives. Tried with file zipped and unzipped. I spent 20 minutes talking to Rossmeyer H-D service rep yesterday and he can’t make it work either. I spent 25 minutes on hold today waiting for someone from H-D corporate to explain this to me. I got tired and hung up

I and my group of friends are heading to Sturgis in about 3 weeks so having Dealer names and locations updated is kinda important since we’ll be traveling areas that none of us are familiar with.

Just here in south Florida alone Ft. Myers Harley in my dealer locator. Is now Six Bends H-D with new location. Former Chester’s H-D in my back yard is now Alligator Alley H-D.

One local dealer (won’t name names) said when you do a standard radio software update it automatically updates dealers...........sorry but no. If that were true why would H-D have a separate section on it’s website for “dealer locator” updates?

Also if I remember correctly when buying my bike I think dealer said I get either one or two free map updates, can’t remember. Anyone know?

Thanks for letting me ramble.

Just to be sure - there is a nng folder and a swdl.iso file that has to be copied to the USB drive. If you were able to use the drive to update the boom software then it must be formatted correctly. Might want to be sure to have most current Boom software installed (sounds like you do).

As far as nav map updates on my 2018 FLHTKSE I get 3 free over 5 years. I'm not sure what you have, but check in your Boom manual and it will detail what you are entitled to.

Map updates available at naviextras.com

Here is a thread from last year about dealer database install. They say to unzip, then copy both the nng folder and swdl file. I don't remember doing that. It does point out that usb needs to be formatted FAT and will no work with Mac, only Windows.

Holy crapstick it worked. Thanks to you guys input it finally worked. The directions on the H-D website are for chit. Yes must have flash drive formatted in FAT. Download from website the dealer locator software to your desktop. Once in desktop unzip or its actually it’s called “extract” on my pc. Once extracted you’ll have a “nng” and a “swdl”. Send both of those to your flash drive. Once done go connect your flash to bike. Turn on accessory let system boot up. You’ll then be informed about update. You’ll be asked one question answer yes. And boom you’ll be done in a few minutes.

Thanks again for all the ideas and input.

Scott,

How or who do you ask about the free map updates? Dealer? Corporate? The dealer I bought from has changed owners and all staff. They don't know me for nothing. Thanks.

In your original post you said you downloaded them from H-D website... post the link to that page for Carlos. I would look for it myself for him but I'm on my phone right now.
