A friend of mine who got the 2730 at the same time I did, heard that if you call Garmin after you register your GPS with them on the web-site, and you tell them that your MapSource disk did not come with your 2730, they will verify your address, and send you one at no-charge!
And, just for emphasis, we have also explained that we have a good need for the software, such as planning routes for HOG, Business, etc. and that it was a large reason we went w/Garmin.
The disks... get this... are on back order! Ha! My luck hasn't changed!
-
do they also give you the unlock codes at no charge? Usually, the disc is free but when you install it, a credit card payment is required online. good luck

The following is the reply that I just got back from Garmin:
Thank you for contacting Garmin:
The unit does not come with a Mapsource because of the mapping being
pre-loaded on the unit I will send you a trip and waypoint manager software
if you are wanting to transfer the waypoints and tracks back and forth from
the unit to the computer. You should receive that in about 3-5 business
days.
Best Regards,

That's weird. The 2720 is also pre-loaded, but mine came with the MapSource software. Heck, being able to transfer data back and forth is one of the coolest things about these new units, IMHO. It takes A LOT less time to plan a route at the PC and transfer it to the Garmin than to program that same route directly into the Garmin.
Let us know what kind of software they send you, JC.

O.K. you guys know that I'm new to this GPS thing so I wouldn't know what I have if I was holding it in my hand..........which I am. It just got here and it's a CD-Rom. The label says Garmin CD-Rom and the title is "Trip & Waypoint Manager". Then the fine print says:
Transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks between your Garmin GPS and your PC. A general worldwide basemap provides basic cartography, including interstates, motorways, oceans and various other general reference detail. Map displays political boundaries, principal cities and towns. Archive GPS data for future use."
Then the super fine print on the front says "PC only not MAC compatable. Product does not include and detailed maps. You are not able to download additional map detail to any Garmin GPS using this product. Map Source Trip & Waypoint Manager can be used with nearly all Garmin GPS units. Uploading/downloading waypoints, routes, and tracks work with nearly all Garmin GPS units, excluding the GPS 100 family and panel mount aviation units. This product is not compatable with iQue."
Now I know that somebody else here can tell me, the novice, exactly what all that means? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I don't have a freakin' clue WTF that last paragraph means. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

...The label says Garmin CD-Rom and the title is "Trip & Waypoint Manager"...
It sounds like it is software that is a step below MapSource. My assumption from what I saw in 103's description is that MapSource is a combination of the "Trip & Waypoint Manager" and all of the detailed maps.
My friend just got his software after calling Garmin. It is called City Navigator 7. I haven't seen it run yet, but I'm hoping it is all I am hoping it will be.
-
City Navigator is what you want. That's the name of the software frrom MapSource. It has all the detailed maps and allows the uploading and downloading of routes and waypoints to the 27xx.

Here's a scan of the DVD jacket for the software that came with my 2720 . . .

JCZ,
Did it come with software for the MP3 player thats built into the 2730...
I like the fact that I could also use it as a mp3 player.
I am looking into buying the unit and was curious how yall hooked it into
the stereo...The harmon Kardon has an aux input...but I wasnt sure how
to tie it in to give voice prompts through my headsets, if say I was listinging to the radio or cd. The cb and intercom lowers whatever I am
listening to and comes right in.
-
It doesn't need additional software to run the mp3 player. Just plug it into an unused USB port on your computer, it will show up as another drive. Then just drag & drop & you're stylin'! It brodcasts an FM signal to your radio. Set it up on an unused frequency, tune your radio to the same frequency & you're good to go. The voice prompts will mute whatever audio you're listening to at the time. You can also set it up to chime when it breaks in.
-
JCZ,
Sounds like you need to call Garmin back.
-
Ditto....Thanks
-
Whats a good deal for a 2730? Im sure JCZ shopped around...
where did yall get yours at?
Thanks,
Barry

They sent me the "Trip & Waypoint Manager". Is that what you're referring too?
-
I dont know...
Is this the software that you can set up your own waypoints on the computer then transfer them to the 2730...
I downloaded the poi installer...and was wondering if you got better software by writting them?
Thanks,
Barry

JC & dis;
You need to get the "City Navigator NT" software. Current version for the 27xx's is v7. This will enable you to plan detailed routes on your PC & transfer them to the GPS. The "Trip & Waypoint Manager" is a poor boy version of this - it's missing a lot of the features of the City Navigator.

I've found the best place to purchase GPS units is gpsonsale.com. It was the cheepest I've found for the 2720 & 2730. Their delivery was very quick.
