Just checked a Milwaukee 8 out....
« on: August 27, 2016, 06:33:56 PM »

I went to my 2 local dealers just to see what the buzz was about.  I'm not a fan of the way the new exhaust looks, but for stock....it doesn't sound bad!  They have a new bag security clip instead of the the recalled recall set up.  What got me the most is the counter balancing!  The Road Glide Special I checked out barely vibrated the handle bars at all!  And....there is almost no engine noise!  I have to say, Harley may have finally got it right!

I looked at a 107 very quickly. The oil flow from the oil cooler feeds the oil supply for cooling the heads. A single line that splits above the front head and feeds both heads. Then the oil returns to the tank from the rear head return line from both heads. Not sure if some of the cool oil goes to the engine are all to the heads.

Looks nice will be much harder to remove rocker boxes looks like 10 bolts and some are a pain to get to. Of course the oil cooling lines are in the way and a plug job will be a little harder to get to the right side plugs.

I'm curious if in regular service will have to raise the rear of the gas tank to get to that right rear spark plug.

We took out a couple of the 107's today.  The Street Glide and the Road Glide. They were very smooth and much more refined feeling than the twin cams. Power stock was strong the entire rev range. The suspension was smooth and made the bikes feel almost nimble. I liked the narrower engine and the lighter feel of the clutch.
The salesman did say the tank would need to be removed before you can change the second plug. I think he said the rocker cover might need to be removed as well.

Yes sir you have to raise (at least) or remove the tank to get to the top plugs.

Not
Oil cooled. That's water and antifreeze.

Starter looks like a can thrown in the back of the motor. They messed that up. Started it and thought it was noisy. Gear noise. Like a sewing machine. Way to quiet stock. Didn't mind anything else engine wise. Noticed limited with one antenna. Maybe combined or no CB?

Like new saddlebags hardware .

Also researched the cam a bit. Stock cam is .350/.374 lift.
Intake 7/1
Exhaust 33/14

Seems crazy low close on intake and no overlap? Must flow without playing with cam,
Even there Power Cam offering is
.498/.491 lift
Intake 4/33
Exhaust 60/7

Earlier close than TC 255 cam in our CVO.  And three degree overlap???

Well that's annoying.  Just looking at it you know it is at best really close so not surprised.  Reminds me of a V8 Chevy Monza.

Isn't the 107 oil cooled & the 114 water cooled? The 2nd post was a 107 - oil cooled.

The 107 Limited and RGU are water cooled. The other 107s are oil cooled.

Checked out the new bikes at my local dealership.  The new engines are visible gorgeous, but VERY disappointing "sound" of the bikes.  Sound like a metric.  No growl, very quiet.  Doesn't that defeat the purpose of owning a Harley??  I know a lot of people are drawn to the "number" on the cubic in signage (107/114) but not sure dumping money into a new bike for 50-70cc's (basically adding a lawn mower engine) is worth it yet.  Very little design change to all the chassis...  Only time will tell.

With that being said...its going to be interesting to see what deals they are going to come up with to offload all the '16's!!!!

Had a chance to demo a 2017 CVO Ultra today at Brian's H-D in Langhorne, PA.  The 114 is mechanically much quieter and feels "more refined" than the 110 in my 2009.  Very smooth at idle and running down the road.  Revs up quickly in the lower gears and pulls hard on the highway.  We passed through some short tunnels and along some stone walls and the stock exhaust sounds real good to me.  As nice as it was, I didn't get off the bike thinking "I have to have one of these right now."  Is it better than my 2009 CVO? ... yes, but not that much better.  When the time eventually comes to replace my current bike, I know I'll be happy with the M-8.

I was thinking that exact thought.  Back in the day, we would improvise and cut a flap to access rear plugs.  We changed oil pumps that way.

Maybe that's why there are two plugs, just change the easy one.
