What voltage does your volmeter read?
« on: March 22, 2013, 09:26:23 PM »

Hi there

Curiosity questions about the voltmeter readings. I know there there is still a current factory program/recall on voltage regulators on this model which I need to speak to my dealer about.

What voltage shows on the volmeter when:

You turn on the ignition switch and do not start the bike?

Start the bike at voltage reading at idle.

Running the bike at 3000 rpm or thereabouts.

Cheers

The answer is always the same.  The gauge reports the max voltage in the system (on the battery side of the voltage regulator).  So it reports battery voltage when the engine isn't running and reports output from the charging system (if it's working) when the engine is running.

The newer bikes with the three phase charging system start charging at or just above idle.  The older bikes needed an RPM surge to energize the system.

You will know if the regulator is acting up. Believe me.
The voltage meter will jump up and down, engine light may come on. It will occur off and on for a while then it will stop.
I got a recall letter a 3 months after mine went out. They had to overnight a chrome one.
If it drops below 12 volts while riding you probably  have one of them.
