Rear Fender Wiring Hole under seat
« on: October 05, 2009, 09:00:44 AM »

So,  I was cleaning the Ultra yesterday after returning from our trip and removed the seat for cleaning (OK, unlike DICKW, this does not happen often and the tank has never been removed by me!).  It was really cruddy under there and I got to thinkin' (something I don't do too often  :-[ ) that it really was dirtier than it should be.  There was a lot of black grime coming off the wiring harnesses.

I surmised that the road grime was splashing up through the wiring hole.

So, I took some black electrical tape and sealed up the hole around the wiring harness.  Will this help or cause new problems?

Thanks for pouncing on me, a paint brush and a little simple green gets the grime off pretty good..... just saying.. :2vrolijk_21:

The (electrical)tape will come off eventually, keep an eye on it.

Clear packing tape would be my choice. (If I were going to be that anal)   :)

I use a rubber grommet and fill the center with silicone.

Damn,

This cleaning thing is a problem!  I don't think I have ever cleaned an ultra as good as I am right now!  While I am sure it pales in comparison to the way others clean their bikes regularly, I have never taken more than 4 hours for my biggest cleaning.

I will be on day 4 today with no end in sight and the bike still on the lift!  I spent 6 hours on Sunday, 2 on Monday and another 2 yesterday!

Every time I clean an area that I really never paid much attention to in the past, I find a new area that has some dirt like the top of the crossmember under the bike!

I did finally put the seat back on to prevent me from removing the tank but the saddlebags will go on after I finish with the sides of the rear fender tonight.

Bill,
When you have 18 hrs. in the cleaning you will be close to finished. That is without removing the tank.
Don't ask ow I know this.

I have another 8 to go?  Does that include the Trailer?  I forgt that I have been working on that also.  Washing, Pre-cleaner and First coat done, second coat tonight...then clean and armorall the bra and cooler...then tackle polishing the wheels!  Did I mention that I just learned that the bottom has a nice durable (Line-x type) protective coating?  That was news to me since this again is my most detailed cleaning of the trailer too!

Notice I said almost done. With trailer you can add 6 hours. I you do it faster than that, you did it wrong and have to start all over again!

Bill, does this mean that this bike now goes into hibernation for the winter since it's getting such a all-over cleaning/polishing/waxing?  One reason those of us down here don't do such a good cleaning is we're riding year round  :-[ and it's just hard to do one when you're getting ready to head out in a few.  ???  spyder
