Crank plug???
« on: September 26, 2013, 08:31:22 PM »

Hey there, I was looking at my crank that is now out on the work bench. And I don't see any place to install this " PLUG" that you guy's are talking about. The large pin that holds it all together already has a plug thing in there, and I don't see any other orifices that can be " plugged " Any insight would be great. Cheers.

Oh, my builder had a empty shoppe so I decided to do my cam swap. Took the cam chest apart and found a bunch of bad wear. The crank was 0.009" out, out came the engine for a total rebuild. Check out the other thread with all the picks.  ( "So I went in for some new cams, then the poop hit the fan" )  Now what is this "plug" stuff about.

That plug is a freeze plug
The crank shops use a tapered pin/plug to expand the crank pin and then weld them. Take that unit to Silvermoon for proper servicing and it will be good for the duration.

I see, looks much better than that steel thing that is in there now. So what does the plug do?

The plug is a press fit into the hollow end of the crank pin, and it's installed after the pin is pressed into the flywheels.  It basically makes the fit of the pin to the flywheel tighter and thus less likely to move.

So this plug is installed even if the crank is welded? Wouldn't the weld keep things together and straight?

Hello to all, I was wondering at what point in this procedure is the crank trued, before or after the plug is inserted and welded. I am thinking before, but then it may get out of true when the plug is pressed in and welded. Which way is correct? Thanks in advance. CAHDBIKER
