Not all chrome hardware is created equal
« on: March 10, 2009, 07:12:04 PM »

A good buddy of mine bought a 2003 SERK back in 03.  Before he picked it up, he had he dealer swap out many of the standard bolts for chrome.  It looks like the dealer really didn't distingush between grade 5 and grade 8 when he was doing the swap.  Attached are a couple of pictures of what happened to his rear sprocket after about 12K miles.

Another picture:

So, 2 take aways:  1  Never use grade 5 when grade 8 is called for.  Better yet, use SS ARP bolts.  2 Never let the dealer work on your bike, unless its absolutly necessary.

BTW.  My buddy is fine, this happened when we was going slowly and very close to home.

Wow!!!! :shocked2: That sucks big time!!! I had to go back and look to see what grade bolts were used when I had my billet sprocket installed. The MoCo has a chrome grade 8 hardware kit for this install..

Chrome Hardware Kit for Rear Belt Sprocket - Hex Head

Doesn't show for "Touring" but the size and grade are correct and we've learned previously that just because the MoCo doesn't show it's applicable they will work.

In your picture that's not a stock 03 SERK wheel.  Did someone change it out later?

Its not so much the grade of bolts but that the bolts came loose. From the looks of it that pulley was loose for some time before all the bolts sheared. I have seen grade 8 bolts shear like this when they are allowed to get loose. The constant hammering of the pully on them will break even stainless bolts eventually.

I've seen that aplenty in cars as well. One would think you would notice a vibration or hear something amiss before total failure.  :nixweiss:

You would think you would have heard a noise or felt a vibration.  Didn't just happen in one mile.

That is the point, these were loose well before the total failure.

A few years ago, I was on the VStar forum and made a post about all chrome not being equal.  I got responses from far and wide, all disagreeing with me and telling me it was all the same.  I just sat back, shook my head, and never posted back any responses to them.

Looks like the is not enough shoulder on the bolts and to much threads. With the pully putting a load on the bolt threads it looks loke the pully holes took a beating.

The torque on those bolts (when done right) is substantial.

I doubt the Allen head cap screw was torqued correctly.
