Pull trigger on new cams or not
« on: September 23, 2020, 11:01:34 AM »

So I went to my dealer to get a quote on installing the Johnson lifters that many suggested I get to replace oem's on my 13 Road Glide custom 11k miles on her. First question was why would i want to do that?  Explained that I read many customers on CVO form having problems with them granading in motor and I wanted to prevent that." Well I never heard of that, I don't trust any online forms".. I said I do, I trust every damn  thing they say.... Just then the service manager comes from around the corner and says " oh yeah we have had a few do that here". Anyway the point of my posting is to question if I should replace the cams also while they are in there?  I'm not unhappy with the performance of my 110.  Race tuner, D&D fat cats and cats removed from head pipe.  What say guys? talk me into or out of new cams and what do you suggest?  I don't want to keep chasing and upgrading weak parts because i'm adding performance parts.  I ride solo and my riding lately has been in state tho I usually ride longer distances when I can.

In my humble opinion I would change cams to the Kury 24d if I could find a set. That cam in a otherwise stock 110 makes a real difference you can feel all through the RPM range.

Kept it when I upgraded to 117

Replace them for longevity reasons. If you like the stock cam you will like the tts-100 and so will your lifters

I would not worry you are just broke in
at 11,000 miles as long as you get them out by 30,000 others may or may not agree.

Shrader.   I had those 24d cams in my 12sg.    John Sachs put those in for me with a Sachs build.   Never looked back. Great cams.  My buddy has that bike now.  He is very happy.    Stuart.  :2vrolijk_21:

I am still running the 24D's also with Sachs heads. Have to agree with Shrader, run them both at 110 and now at 117 and have been very happy

Its about the combination.  I personally would not use the 24d without pulling the heads and adding compression. About 10.2 is ideal.

cams mean a tuner - the tuner costs more than the cams.. the lifters are very important - do the inner cam bearings if you open the case - you CAN do the lifters without opening the case if you want to.

if you like how it runs - do the lifters

I've seen so many people replace their stock SE-255 cams with other mild cams only to get around the same, or sometimes even worse results than what they had to start with. If you're happy with how it runs, I'd leave em' in there unless like HD Street performance hinted in their post......Something about the characteristics of those cams is hard on lifters, etc.

Swapping to better lifters is the main thing, and I'd ask someone more knowledgeable than me about the valve springs. From what I understand the stiff valve springs aid in wearing out lifters.

The springs are a red herring. Also not represented honestly. They only have about 160# seat pressure and not an unreasonable rate. When doing head work i replace them with smaller lighter duals without a flat wire dampner. The beehives some love have a lower rate but higher seat pressure. As soon as a lifter leaves the lobe you hear lash. This clobbers hydraulic roller lifters.

The TTS-100s are fantastic for stock stage 1.  I find myself in the same place on a 2015 SGCVO.

I am going with the TTS-150s this round as I will go with a 113 later.  The 100s have great streetable torque as near off idle as they get with stock cr.

The TTS cams are conservative as far as lift rate and ramp IME. This helps lifter life despite heavy components up top.
