Title: King TourPak for '07 SERK
Post by: Hoist! on November 13, 2007, 02:08:29 PM
Well, I bit the bullet and went for a King TourPak to match the Hard Saddlebags for my SERK. I ordered it in primer and will send it out to Paint By Gene for a matching paint job.

I ordered the whole package from Jenny at Charlies HD. KTP in Primer, all required hardware and key matched lock, Detachable TP Rack, TP Spoiler in Primer, Contoured TP Luggage Rack, TP Liner Bag, TP Interior light kit, TP & Saddlebag Organizer Kit, and all required mounting hardware. Grand total with shipping is $1350. The seat-matching Corbin Flame-stitched Trunk Rest is another $239. About $1600 plus paint for the whole setup. I hope Binx really likes having a TP now! ::)

Of course, I'll get pictures for ya'll when the whole thing is completed. Be patient, it'll take a few months for this to come together.

And it's still not a FD and never will be! ;)

Howie, Congrats on your award and more importantly the great trip that came with it. Question for you re your seat. When you talked to Corbin did they tell you they were going to put flames on the 07 SERK seat? As you may recall Becky with Corbin in Florida had originally told me they would do that. She was to have sent me some samples so I could decide if I wanted to try and match the braids/welts on the seat to my bike. Anyway I had not received the samples so when I was at a rally last weekend I asked the Corbin rep about the seats and samples. Corbin rep (John, also from Florida) stated that the new company policy was "no flames" on the 07 SERK seat. He stated that the 07 SERK seat would come with the stripe that is pictured on their web site, though we did have a choice as to the material for the stripe. Anyway was just wondering what the heck was going on as I keep getting conflicting stories. jj

Holy crap! Not! :P

Don't think I wasn't prepared for the onslaught! The Fairing just isn't going to happen. I think ya'll already know that. Neal secride it best:

so rider forward its a Road King and BSR back its a FD

best of both worlds to keep both happy

So that's that! :P ;D

Now for the music part. You know I've been alluding to that GPS thing recently, right? Well that will probably ultimately be the solution. Remember my buddy Andy? I'll attach the pics from the Mem Day BBQ as a reminder. That was a great installation. Bullet Turn Signal Housings with Speakers, mounted backwards under the handlebars like the original signals; Garmin Zumo with XM and sattelite weather; a 40 Watt Chrome Amp that looks a little like a voltage regulator, mounted to the downtubes, where there's already a mount for it. All done with hidden wires (mostly). Andy's good at that chit. I'll ask him to help me out. That will resolve that and get me into the 21st Century I guess! ;D

So you see, I haven't strayed from my love for the RK, it'll still be a real motorcycle (from the front seat anyway, hehe), and that's as close as it's getting to being a FD!

YOU FD GUYS KILL ME! ;)

Thanks jj! I've not gotten one indication from anyone that a Flame-stitched Corbin for the SERK is a problem. Rich 07 has one on his now. His has a slight clearance issue at the tank panel, which supposedly Corbin has corrected now. Is your problem a non-heated version. Both of our seats are heated. A heated seat needs some type of stitching pattern in it. Maybe that's the difference. If they won't make a plain one for you, just order a heated one. Can't come up with any other reason that you'd be having trouble getting one. :confused5:

I bought a flame stitched Corbin for LD when I got back from MV last year. The rider backrest and passenger backrest are also flame stitched. I have nothing buy praise for the way Corbin treated me in ordering the seat, making it or delivering it. In my book Corbin is #1

Now if only they weren't so expensive

Hoist, I have had a flame stitched, non-heated,  Corbin seat for several months. When I noticed that the gap between the tank and the seat was wider than it had been when I first installed it I contacted Corbin and that is when I was advised that Corbin had initially sent me the wrong seat. That is also when the issue of flame stitching and whether or not one could get it on the CVO seat came up. I was initially told no flames on CVO seat but after I complained Becky told me they would do it since the original mistake had been theirs. However as I said when I talked to a Corbin rep last week  he said they would not put the flames on the CVO seat. Guess we will know for sure when your seat comes in. I may just go ahead and get the Corbin with the stripe down the center and try and match it to the blue on the black ice.  http://corbin.com/harley/king/hdrkcvo7dt.shtml    Seems like the only thing we know for sure is that if you ride it you will get a rear head gasket leak.  ;D    Oh well there are bigger problems to worry about than this. Flames or stripes it will still beat the stock seat. jj

Howie,

Like Twolane said, where you gonna hang the radio next?  Well, I don't care for the tinny sound of those little bullet speakers and since the primary concern was increased enjoyment for Martha, I bought her these and she is one happy camper!

The glasses hold a charge for about 8 hours and that's about long enough.  She sits happily back there listening to her selection of tunes.  A Micro SD card in her phone and a few hundred songs to choose from streaming music to the glasses.  Not bad, and she never has to tell me to change the music!  Very simple solution and no wiring required!

Thanks jj and Craig!

jj, I wanted to use adjustable passenger pegs to add to the floorboards that I put on. I think that's the way Terry did it on hyis. I'll PM him about that.

Craig, I like the music too! Those bullet speakers aren't bad if you use an amp with them. My friend has that setup (shown below) and it works well. She can always get glasses like that to use with a portable MP3 if she wants that too.

kb, I'm painting it to match my Hard Bags that I've already done. Black Ice paint with the Leaf Flames on the sides of the TP, the Marbled triangles on both sides of the raised portion of the lid, Raised Flames (like on my Hard Bags) in the recessed center of the lid, and a Screamin' Eagle Logo on the rear panel. That's what I envision now. I've not spoken to the painter yet, but we were on the same page when he did my Hard Bags.

I'll let ya'll know how things go. :2vrolijk_21:

Howie,
I believe this is the system from 2WheelTunes.  JP Cycles carries them among others.  The best part of this system is that you could utilize the wires that used to run to your directionals before relocating to the nacelle. that were inside the bars.  That should make you go DOH!  I thought of it as I was cutting off the wires flush to the switch housings.  I heard them at Sturgis, but not while on the road.

By the way, with a tour pak you can be a half-fast FD.

Thanks Phil. If I'm not mistaken, that's the system I'm using to connect to the Garmin Zumo/XM system, instead of using a portable device. The XM interfaces nicely with the Zumo screen for control. Overall, it made for a nice system, not much bulkier than just adding GPS alone. Appreciate the link.

On another note, I spoke with Gene (painter) today. He agrees with my paint scheme for the KTP. Leaf flames on the sides, marbling on both sides of the lid, raised flame in the recessed center of the lid, and Screamin' Eagle logo on the rear panel. It should match up really well with the paint scheme he used for my hard bags.

When all this is done, Binx should really be happy back there on longer trips, we'll both have tunes, I'll still be on a normal bike from my seating position, and I can strip it all down quickly anytime I want. All-in-all, this will add another dimension to Cybil, my girl with many personalities! And with the new engine, hopefully without breaking or leaking anymore either! ;)

Hoist. Are those the speakers that your friend mounted on his serk? Any problems with them hitting the tank when handlebars turned all the way to one side? I have been thinking about getting a set of external speakers for my zumo. Was waiting to see these when they came out, were supposed to have been out this fall but looks like it is not going to happen. http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=harley&ci=3889 Also as to the kuryakyn adjustable pegs, I have them mounted on my bike. You will have to enlarge (drill) the small hole where the peg goes to allow your peg to attach.  jj

The speakers I'm using are the ones referred to by Phil in the J&P Cycles link below. They're actually bullet turn signal housings that mount where the original SERK turn signals were mounted, before I relocated the to the spot lights. So they clear everything without a problem.

Actually, I'm taking it a step further now. Since I'm adding the KTP, I figured why not add speakers to the TP, Ultra style! :o I ordered the 6.5" Speaker Pod Housings from eGlideGoodies (yeah I know) as recommended by Jim. Jim is sending me a 150W Hawg Wired amp to mount in the KTP for the rear speakers, which I'll make detachable with the rest of the KTP.

This way, I'll have some really decent sound when the KTP is mounted. Yet, I'll still have something, with the 100W front amp and Bullet Speakers, when the KTP is detached. I hadn't seen this done yet with the Zumo on a RK, but I didn't see why it couldn't be done. Jim thought it was a great idea, and sees no reason why it won't work!

So, my next question.....Has anyone ever heard of companies called Dragonfly or Hoppe?

NOT!!!

Jim is sending me a 150W/Ch Hawg Wired amp to mount in the KTP for the rear speakers, which I'll make detachable with the rest of the KTP.

This way, I'll have some really decent sound when the KTP is mounted. Yet, I'll still have something, with the 50W/Ch front amp and Bullet Speakers, when the KTP is detached. I hadn't seen this done yet with the Zumo on a RK, but I didn't see why it couldn't be done. Jim thought it was a great idea, and sees no reason why it won't work!

So, my next question.....Has anyone ever heard of companies called Dragonfly or Hoppe?

NOT!!!

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Then there is Deadcenter Fairing  Howie  (80 watt, ipod compatible, polk audio drivers, ciggy lighter and the biggie, it is removable)....

I picked up a KTP myself...Big a$$ rack on top with a spoiler and speakers.  Now to gut the harness and find a source for those little black 3 pin wiring connectors to light it (any ideas)....I like the idea of your paint scheme, I'll do something similar too...Leafed side flame, marbleized top insert and if you don't mind a SE logo on the back too!

Good luck with your projects this winter

We are off to somewhere (no gps, no plan, no clue) in soflo next week slurp a few beverages...

Thanks miker! Man, after the Cali trip, and with my bike in the shop now, that sure sounds tempting! :2vrolijk_21:

Too bad it can't happen. We're off to Puerto Vallarta in a few weeks, and then no vaca this year left. Next year, 2 weeks for Sturgis. So little time, so much to do. Man, why can't I just retire now! :(

Yeah, retire....ahhhh, thats it, I am gonna.  In a few years unless lotto helps, that is.

Gonna move back to cali, buy a vineyard, pan for gold and go riding...but keep a condo in Miami Beach for the cold rainy cali winters, if I don't start sking again, because there ain't no place like that place anywhere I've ever been...

Enjoy the porto bucko!  Happy Holidays.

Just spoke to Jenny. All the parts but the TP itself are in. Everything should ship this week. Once I get everything, off it goes to Paint By Gene in WA. The engine should be done and I should have the bike back, before the TP comes back from Gene. We can mount & wire the Zumo and front amp/speakers, and get all the wiring run for the rear TP amp/speakers and TP spoiler light. Then just mount the amp and speakers and plug it all in, when it arrives back from Gene. This should be cool! ;)

Is the order from the dealer all TP parts?  If so why not have her send it to the painter and save an extra round of shipping $$$?

Do ya 1 better. Try this: http://www.paintbygene.com/

Gene will do right by ya. Send him good pics of your hard bags so he can match things up. My TP should be in by next week. Tell him you're doing the same thing as me, and that you're from this site. It's cheaper for him to do both TP's at once. We both might benefit by sending them at the same time. I did that with TN on the hard bags and we both got great prices that way. Let me know. ;)

I emailed him but today I will snoop around the indy chopper shop to see if I can find a local just to spray it in black ice.

It was off a uc and has all the lights, tenners and crap on it, so I don't how much room there is to serk it, if you know what I mean.

It has a little grind on the lid and  3" crack in the box, so it would make it tough on Gene to ask for a quote or turnaround time...

It is vivid black now and I can use it but....but.

Thanks again Howie.

No prob Mike. Also, just so you know, I got those speaker pods from EGlideGoodies. Those things are made by DragonFly. Did they make your Fairing? They look OK, but I didn't cut the vinyl to look inside them yet. I'm going to try to squeeze Polk Audio 6.5" Marine Speakers in there. Might be a tight fit! Good luck with the TP! :2vrolijk_21:

The new primered KTP finally showed up today. But it's the wrong one! They ordered me a EG KTP, not a RK one. It has the antenna connector already mounted in it. Now there's a hole for that mount. Should I remove it and have the hole patched, or return it for a new clean one? As usual, nothing's straightforward as it should be! Damn! >:( ::)

I think the hole is too close to the edge for good support. I use the clip on flag mount anyway.

The new TP's are a plastic material, and won't take a patch like the FG ones. After a little time, you'll see the circular patch outlines in the paint. So I'd rather start clean. ;)

BTW, before I ship it back, does anyone need it?

I don't need it, my UC pak will be done this week, I hope.   I need to order the little sticky foam gackets for under the spoiler though, I forgot to when I stepped into "that place".

I'd love one of those SE inserts the 08's have on the back.

Check this site.  Adam is painting the TP for me, maybe even done today.
He builds some nasty chops.  Check the "smoke out bike", single sided, does not look like it is to comfy but I love the truck tire rear.

Woo Hoo!!! Gene should have my TP today or tomorrow. It shipped from Charlie's on Mon! Gene said he'll call to go over everything after he receives it. He has everything else already. He's painting it, and then assembling everything for me completely. All I'll have to do is pop it on my existing detachable hardware, and do some minor wiring to connect the Spoiler LED. :2vrolijk_21:

After that comes the task of installing the new audio system. But I'm way not up to that yet. Let's get it back from paint first! ::) ;)

We're getting closer, but not quite there yet. Gene sent me a coupla progress pics. The bodywork is done, and it's been primed. He said he needed to do a lot of prep work to the speaker pods first too. The firs pic is of the Dragonfly 6-1/2" speaker pods. These will be fitted with 6-1/2" Polk Audio Marine speakers with individual crossovers. The crossovers will be mounted in the TP along with the Hawg Wired 150W amp that will be drivibg them.

As we get closer, here are 3 more progress pics. It should be well past this stage now, as it's supposed to ship today, overnight, so I'd have it for the trip to York. Not sure it'll make it on time. If it does, I won't have time to mount and wire the amp in. He's completely assembling everything for me. All electrical, speaker pods/speakers, lighting, rack, and TP detachable mount. Just supposed to snap it on complete when I receive it. We shall see, I guess. ;)

Thanks Mike! Agreed on the weight thing. Even though I'm sure the sound system will be greatly enhanced with the HW amp/Polk speakers in the TP, the only times it'll be on is for trips. Gotta have the room for lots of something, huh? ;)

Hadn't even thought of this until just now.  The King paks can sometimes be awkward to get over detachable points with the wide Corbin seat anyway.  Add to that the amp, speakers, etc and you're creating an even more graceful balancing act.  You better teach Binx where to give the extra pair of hands to slide that puppy on and off.  And you'll also want to keep an eye on the detachable points.  They are wear items in normal use anyway.  Watch for cracking.

One other thing, Corbin dual tour seats don't fit with tour paks unless the tour pak is mounted as far back on the detachable rack as it can be (there are two sets of holes).  It won't fit at all if mounted in the forward position.

Also, Corbin offers two variants of the dual tour seat.  One for use with tour paks and one for use without.  Since the two projects weren't joined at the hip did you specifically order the dual tour for use with tour pak?

I sure hope so! I ordered everything from Jenny all at once. The seat is for a SERK though, which doesn't have a TP. So I guess I'll find out when I get it. I hope I didn't get screwed here!!! :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

I had to peel the leather off of my corbin pillion seat for Schmoopy and grind the sheet out of it to get to fit better (not right, just better).
I was agast at the icky finish work on the pillion.     :nervous:
So's I go to town it wit a air file...I notched the back so the tp rack will fit without cussing and radiused the curve for the fender as it was rubbing a mark in the paint.    >:(

It is still a huge paininthenuts to put on with the bike all leaned over on the side stand... :-\
The tp rack made need a little persuasion to fit the quick dissconnects as well.  I hope it is worth the money and effort seein as I ain't used it yet... :D

No worries.  Anything can be made to work with the proper amount of drilling, cutting, bending, pushing, squezing, and cursing.

That Don has a way of stirring things up.  He sold me a pair of hinges for a tour-pak, and I don't even have a tour-pak.   :nixweiss:

I figure I will sell mine to Gary, for a small profit.   :devilish:

Was too bugged by the possibility.  The other touring models offer a dual tour for tour paks, and a dual tour for no tour pak (bigger in the rear of the seat).  The Road Kings don't have that distinction though.  And nowhere in Corbin's online description in the Road King section does it mention tour paks one way or the other.

I just called them.  Was too bummed at not knowing.  The sales guy said the Road King seats (including CVO Road King seats) will work with detachable tour paks.

Still worried though.  Gene had to mount the speaker pods high enough to clear the saddle.  The sales wanker at Corbin had to know what he's talking about.  I wish I'd never thought of it....

I spoke with Pam, Gene's wife. They're trying to get it out today for overnight del'y. If they can guarantee tomorrow's delivery, they're shipping it that way. They'd like me to have it for the York Trip to show off to youze guys!

Gene will mount the TP in the furthest rear position on the rack for me. I hope I don't have to do anything but maybe fight with it a little to get it on. We shall see. Won't know if I'll have it for York, so I guess I'll just try to surprise you guys! ;)
