friend paralyzed for life from the wobble
« on: March 25, 2007, 10:38:12 AM »

Had close friend paralyzed  for life after he went down on his FLH . Witness say he the bars just started the "wobble" (tank slapping) and went down. Anyone hear or know about it? Anyone know of any fixes, as I still many more friends riding FL's.

Yeah Bobby, we've all heard of it and some have dealt successfully with it. Use the search function for "high speed wobble" and you should come across numerous discussions.

Terrible thing about your friend. We all feel for him and his family and friends.

Just put a True-Track on my 07 SERK. Installation was simple and took about 10 min.

Check them out at http://www.true-track.com

sorry to hear about your friend, but one thing that jumps out at me here is 55 mph thats not high speed. had the bike been serviced recently? sounds like the neck could have been loose. but at 55 i cant imagine any of the usual high-speed suspects being the issue

Very Sorry for your friend and his family. Prayers sent.

55 mph doesnt soumd like high speed wobble, Ive only had a wobble a few times at much higher speeds, are you sure there wasnt another problem?, This should be looked into maybe was a factory error? Assumming that the bike is newer anyway.

Sorry to hear of this will keep him, family, and friends in my prayers. As has been mentioned at the speed he was going it would lead me to think other things contributed to the wobble and not the high speed. :confused5:

Had close friend paralyzed  for life after he went down on his SE. Witness say he has traveling 55 mph on sunny day  good road and bars just start the "wobble" (tank slapping) and went down. Anyone hear or know about it? Anyone know of any fixes, as I still many more friends riding FL's.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Bobby.

It is been my ongoing experience that speeds at or near 55 mph are well below the limits and capabilities of normally functioning Touring Platform chassis.

55 mph could easily be too much for:

1. Striking a foreign object or animal.

2. Rapid tire deflation.

3. Slow tire deflation (foreign object in tire). This will cause the machine to seem ok while riding at speed until a load is placed on the tire, or it deflates completely. The load can come from normal irregularities in the road surface or the rider simply changing lanes.

4. One or both tires substantially under or over inflated.
Under any circumstance where proper tire inflation is not maintained, the tire can no longer perform as it was intended to by design. The affects of improper inflation on the Motorcycle’s handling can be erratic and unpredictable.

5. Mechanical failure resulting from a maintenance issue; loose axle nut or cap, etc.

6. Mechanical failure resulting from component failure.

I'm with Naitram on his post.
And, sorry to hear about your friend.

BUT, 55 is not high speed
What condition were the tires in?
I would think that it's the tires or something broke.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your friend.  Had a friend tell me of a guy who went down when the front brakes locked.  He was able to walk away scratched up and never did get an answer from HD as to what happened.

Condolences for your bud. However, this story doesn't pass the smell test. Many of us, like myself, on this site have been riding for better than a quarter century. During that riding time many of us have probably found ourselves in a wobble or two, even a full blown tank slapper, some have even been down because of it, and on various bikes.  That said, we all know several mistakes can be made that can lead to that situation at various speeds. But a Regular ole Harley Touring bike does not go into a deadly tank slapping wobble at 55mph, if it did - the company would be bankrupt tommorrow - sell short! Now, I am not unsympathetic, I feel for your bro, but the general statement you made doesn't work when many of us have felt the dreaded wobble on our SE's, Personally I was at about 110 when I felt it last week. Of course I have a grand extra invested in my suspension over stock, so it does handle better and the wobble is less, but my azzz is worth it. And next I am adding the Tru-Track. When you started this thread I read and shuddered as I do whenever I hear of another rider down. All bike have limits, no them. Riding is dangerous inherently, we accept that every time we throw a leg over the saddle.

So when you posted this I cringed, prayed, then became a lil upset about the story. I'm not blamin you Bobby, you could have been told this just as you told us, I'm just not buyin. Out of respect I bit my tongue and watched as my buds here cringed at the thought of another bro down on one of our beloved machines and politely passed along well wishes, I wanted to say what I have said here but bit my tongue.  Until now, until I saw the 55 vanished from your post.

I just read this and have not been on the site in a while. Looking at Bobby's first post there is no mention of the speed the bike was traveling.

As mentioned above it could be a number of things that will cause this. I have not had the wobble till I have been above 110 and it work itself out as my speed was climbing.

Do a search and you will get a ton of info on this subject.

Prayers are going out to your friend, your friends family and yourself !!!!!!

Wow, talk about post editing.  I read the original post when it forst popped up and now see the edited version.  They tell a very different story.  The original is referenced in Reply #7, et al.  For a second I had a flashback to the old Nixon days...

UP, it's hard to even make that assessment.  If one part of the story isn't true or is adjusted for greater dramatic impact the rest has to be cast in the same light.  Kind of sad actually.

Edited or not, 55 mph or 105 mph, the rider is down and I'm very sorry to hear that. My own brother went down a couple of weeks ago and it's a hard road back, for him and me since I was there when he went down. It becomes a family thing which includes "us" the riding family. Prayers. Enough said.

Sorry to hear about your friend, regardless of what speed he was traveling.  I hope he finds an answer as to what caused it, be it his error or the bike's.  Unfortunately, either way, he has to live his life this way because of it.

I feel really sorry for you friend
but i personally think that this wooble does not come from a speed like 55 mph never.
i had a wobble with my 2003 FLH but over 100 mph.Remember in Europe where this high speed is allowed.

For those of you that have  made comments on the "friend paralyzed for life" and sent your prayers I say thank you as that friend was me. And for the comments made that they didn't believe the speed of 55, it was 55 and was the "wobble". I'm 58 years old been riding 50 years. Please, please I consider all of you my friends and don't want any of you to live life like I'm living now. Please there is something to this "wobble" issue. If you don't believe me just type in Harley wobble and look at the number of hits. Now type in all other Honda and all other bikes with wobble. Please I beg you all to get a fix put on your bikes and don't wait for the day wake in the hospital and your wife crying with joy your alive and crying from sadness that you will never walk again. I'm living hell every day don't let it be you next.

Your friend,

Bobby,
Any injury or loss is worth mourning.  The cause is irrelevant.  In this last post it seems the matter is even more urgent though, and doubly poignant.

You describe your wife's pain and how you are living now.  So you're injured too.  After the accident that befell the friend which started this thread such coincidental loss is indeed a dual tragedy.....

Bobby - Sorry to hear about your mate - Last year I ran over a dog, luckily for me I hit it straight on, if I had tried to swerve I'd have come off.

It can happen... unfortunately.  It would be interesting to hear what happened from your mate

This sounds like a flat rear tire to me. I've experienced high speed wobble and as Neal said it doesn't occur at 55mph. When your rear tire goes down the bike wobbles from side to side until you either dump it on purpose or get tossed off when it goes into a barrel roll. Sometimes in the aftermath of a motorcycle accident when the rider doesn't understand what happend, it is hard to figure out the real cause. When a motorcycle goes down and skids along the pavement it more often than not chews up the rear tire enough that it's hard to determine if the accident caused the flat or the flat caused the accident. I caution all to continously check your rear tires. I often read posts about folks bragging how many miles they got out of a rear tire. I'm not pointing to Bobby's friend on this, just using what may have happened here to point out how cheap a good tire really is in the grand scheme. Trying to get more than 10k out of rear tire is dumb in my opinion.

Bobby,I am very sorry to hear about your friend. I hope he can move on with his life and adjust. I have known a couple of people who became paraplegic from motorcycle accidents. One all but quadrplegic. Somehow they found the strength to go forward and live their lives. One thing I believe in my heart is that your friend needs you, but doesn't need you to feel sorry for him for very long. He will need you to learn to adjust to his new life just as he will have to learn. Be his friend and go forward with him.

I am dreadfully sorry about your friend, also.  I have been in a couple of slappers with sport bikes, all of which were my fault.  It is unfortunate that this post had to be written at all, but if some good comes out of it then all is not wasted.  There are many inexperienced riders out there who do not pay enough attention to tire pressures, and general "waste of time" maintenance issues.  Most of the guys here realize how important these seemingly monotonous these issues are each and every time you ride, but it can't be emphasized enough.  Not sure if he was truly at 55 or if there was another issue at play here but, collectively we need to prevent these events if we can.  Every time something like this happens, preventable or not, we take another black mark from those who do not understand that it is a safe and wonderful thing to do, unfortunately, many of them are lawmakers.

After taking a spill myself this morning, my thoughts are with you my friend.   I don't have anything like your riding experience, having got into it late in life so I can only try and empathise.  55mph is no speed to travel.  I don't understand the term tank slapping, or wobble, would someone please explain this to me.  I had a softail which has now been traded in for a  SERK, what I am led to believe is that this occurs on the touring models, is that correct.. :nixweiss:

Smiler,
A wobble is when the front/back wheel literally wobbles, if the handle bars correspond to the wobble in the front wheel you get a tank slapper when the right handlebar hits the tank then immediately followed by the left...rapidly and continuously until either the bike rights itself or you go down.  It can happen in any type of bike and was more common in sport bikes until they started installing steering dampers which cuts down significantly in the ability for the handlebars to slap the tank.  There are many causes from mechanical defects with parts on your bike or  other foreign causes i.e. exceeding the speed rating on the tires, something breaking on the bike or hitting something on the road.  I am sure the techno gurus on this site can give you the particular causes that certain Harley's have been prone to this issue, but I am a novice as a wrench.

It is never good in any case or any bike, the centrifugal force of the wheel is enough to keep it up right until that force is disrupted.  The higher the speed the more potential damage.

Hope you are feeling OK after your spill.

Hi seegarz - thanks for the explanation, in my ignorance, I thought it was something to do with the sadlebags flapping lol, silly old me.
On a serious note I cannot imagine that happening, or how I'd respond.  This certainly puts things into perspective as it shows none of us are invincible and as the man says, "be careful out there" .
