Blown 110 motor 2014 CVO Breakout at 18,000 miles
« on: September 04, 2021, 01:41:04 PM »

Looking for any and all comments regarding 2013/2014 problems with the 110 screaming eagle
Motor. I have a 2014 with 18K miles. In June it started stuttering. Brought to Smoky Mountain Harley in Maryville TN. Issue: lifters went and blew the engine. Harley spent 2.5 months to tell me they would not “good will” me and fix it. Small amount of research tells
Me Harley knew about the problem and did not recall the 2013 and 2014 bikes. Does anyone know if a class action has been started on the issue? Anyone experience this problem?

Lifters = Some do and some don't last. IMO, a more than an average amount of Harley lifters seem to sign off early. When a bike comes in here for performance work, I usually replace the lifters with a non-factory brand. ;) Even if they look good. I don't know anything about a class action suit. Also, it seems the "B" series Harley lifters used early on TC engines rarely had problems.

They didn't recall any of the 2007 -2016 110 engines for lifters. Why would the '13-'14 bikes be special? 7 year old bike that's 5 years out of factory warranty will get laughed out if court. I'm surprised SMHD even tried to get some goodwill money out of HD on a bike that old. Not being sarcastic, just realistic.

Harley started putting in the SE lifters in 2013, my 2013 didn't have them, not sure when in the year that happened.  A placebo of an upgrade ssnd.

A bunch of wankers on the internet (like us) isn't where one should want to do their legal research.  That's what places like lexisnexis or other comparable tools is for.  Other's have already commented on the likelihood of satisfaction seeking warranty redress when you're years out of warranty.

Harley updated the lifters several times on the 110.  The updated lifters really were no better, not even the last update in 2014.  On a Club ride in OR and buddies 2014 CVO Limited with 21,000 miles on it had a lifter fail.

In 2016 I had a lifter fail on my 15 CVO Road Glide with 44,000 miles on it, the day before warranty was up.  A friend had them fail on his 2015 also about 36,000 miles.

There was a class action lawsuit on the 110s and I got some $$ for my 07 and 11. I had both bikes at the same time. Can’t recall exactly when settlement was reached. A little research might get details. I’ll look to see if I have any information or documentation. I had 110s crater on me four times. You think I’d learn, lol. IMO and others the 110 is just a disaster waiting to happen. Lifters and cam bearings are really weak points.

When you Rebuild use S&S Premium Lifters. I haven't had any problems on two S&S motors

My 2015 blew 2 summers ago. Sounds very similar to yours. According to Harley, I was responsible for the costs. Asked them to call the factory rep. They did, and a week later harley gave me anew motor. I had to pay labor only. Still cost me 2500, but it beat 7000+. No guarantees, but it can’t hurt. Mine was at black wolf Harley in Bristol Va. good luck

2 summers ago was 2019, so your bike was 4 years old. That was very cool that your dealer went to bat for you. I assume you were out of warranty and had no ESP. I think you came out pretty good. Prodrag1320 is right. The dealer will do the "remove and replace" fix because they are not going to attempt to re-build an engine like this. Too many variables and a possible money-losing venture for them. A good Indy shop could take this on and get someone "back on the road". But I don't think there will be an guarantees. I certainly wouldn't.

2014 CVO Limited. 22367 on the clock. I was as far away from home as I could get. (just South of Astoria OR, started in MD) Front intake lifter grenade. Short version = shipped bike home, ($1000) bought a '20 Limited in Folsom CA to ride home. Parts (so far = $1000) include: lifters, cam plate, cams, oil pump, inner cam bearings & assorted gaskets. Still waiting on cam plate. Total aggravation and very expensive. Spend a ridiculous amount of money on a motorbike that self destructs in less then 25k miles, VERY disappointed with the Motor CO.

Yep, had to get home somehow, wasn't going to fly. Like the rest of us, (most I assume) I remain true to the brand. Having said that doesn't mean I can't be disappointed. The '20 makes number 5 in the stable. Guess ya can't fix stupid.

BTW - The '14 will be up for sale as soon as I can get the parts and get it running again. Looks like you could use another red bike.

My FXR4 with S&S V111 with S&S 585 cam has over 55k miles on the lifters with no problems. I changed them at 55k miles just in case.
