One Of Our Members Recovering From Surgery....
« on: April 07, 2007, 01:47:34 PM »

Just wanted to pass on that one of our members is at home recovering from heart surgery. Some of you in Virginia may have ridden with VaEagle (Dave) before, or know him from his posting here. He sent me a PM today since he hadn't been around for awhile to let me know where he had been and what had happened. Without getting into to much detail Dave had open heart surgery to have a valve replaced and is at home recovering at this time. The operation was a succes, but he will be restricted in what he can do for awhile (no driving cage or riding bike for several weeks). Please keep Dave in your thoughts and prayers while he recovers.

Picture below is of Dave he is standing to my right between myself and Mr.WeCVO (Jamey).

Best wishes for a speedy recovery and smooth rehabilitation. I know of one rider here that recently had that same operation and they actually replaced one of his heart valves with one from a pig. He's now a true HOG!

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the kind thoughts.
They considered looking at the HOG valve job for me but they only last about 15 years and have to be replaced. They went with carbon and titanium for me so  it would last a lifetime but I am on blood thinners.
My first time as inpatient and no real previous problems.(birth defect just got worse and affected heart rhythm)
Glad to be home resting and recovering, looking forward to riding in about a couple of months, got to let the sternum heal from the open heart operation.

Hey Dave, just take it easy, follow the directions, and behave for a while. You'll be up-and-running in no time.
Best wishes and some prayers for you!

(Carbon and titanium? Not chrome? Did you explain to the Doctors the importance of chrome parts??) :D

Wishing you a speedy recovery.  The open heart sugery/valve replacement will be good for 50 years or 500K, whichever comes first.  The hard part is letting the bone grow back together, but then you'll be better than new!  Rest easy and you'll be good to go by June!!

Dave, glad to hear all is getting back to normal for you.

My best friend and hunting partner had the same surgery for a childhood illness caused valve issue three years ago.

Since then we have been at 11,000 feet together hunting and all over the place fishing etc.  He too opted for the metal valve, too many thing to do and needs way more than 15 years to do them, no point it semms in planning on another surgery.

You are in our thoughts.  Rog

Dave,
Glad to see the operation was successful and that you're on the road to recovery.  Take your time and do what the good doc tells you and you'll be back in the saddle before you know it.  Plenty of riding season ahead.  I don't understand though why you didn't go with chrome. :huepfenlol2:

Thanks for all the new best wishes and thoughts.  ;D

I asked about chrome or stainless but this is what they reccomended,
I didn't want to void the factory warranty! :huepfenlol2:

Nice to hear about similar operations and the patient being able to return to normal life. I just hate loosing out on riding time but I guess it's best to listen to the doctor.

Dave,
Glad to hear all went well.  I've been there with the open-heart surgery thing.  Not fun, but a necessary evil.  Listen to the docs and take your time.  All will be well, given time to heal.  Wife wants to head down that way as soon as the weather cooperates and I've got my Jester on the street.  Maybe we can get together and compare "scars". ;)

Dave, I dont know you but glad you made it thru that major surgery and now making replys on the site, a good sign.

Those titanium valves should give you alot more energy once you heal up in there, Im predicting an AF ratio of between 13.3 to 13.8 with 100lbs of torque thru all rpm ranges.

Dave,
We'll see what we can work out.  I get down that way quite often for work anyway (Naval Station).  I usually don't need an excuse to ride, but seeing a CVO pal is as good as any.  Gives me a chance to get more miles on the new bike  ;).
I'll let you know as warmer weather arrives.
Take it easy and good to see you keeping up with the posts!!

Dave,
Just got around to reading this thread....this stuff must be going around... my brother-in-law just had quad bypass ... he's doing just fine now. My wife had open heart surgery 25 years ago... I got a 250,000,000 mile warranty on her and she runs circles around me.
Hoping for the absolute best for you in your recovery! Get well & back in the saddle soon.  ;D ;)

Johnny, our prayers will be with you and your wife.
The surgery itself wasn't too bad, The worst part of the recovery for me so far is the Catch 22 of needing to cough and do breathing exercises to prevent pneumonia yet with the wired together sternum it hurts like heck to cough.
Also not used to being the one needing help, I usually am the helper.
Ride safe everyone,
Dave

Dave,
I feel your pain brother.  One of my "fondest" memories, was my first sneeze in the hospital - i was just about three nano-seconds late in getting the "buddy" pillow to my chest.  Ouch!
It'll pass soon enough - and as I've always told everyone - you'll be amazed at how much better you feel.
Hang in there,

Dave,

I had another member put me onto this thread.  I'm glad to hear that you're through the surgery and well on the road to recovery.  I was found to have severe mitral valve prolapse a couple of months ago.  I've been through a heart echo, a TEE, and a heart cath.  I'm scheduled for surgery 04/30.  My cath had me clean as a whistle (no blockage).  I've been approved to go the robotic route, so they won't have to open up my chest.  I understand that the recovery time is reduced just because they don't have to cut through the breast bone.

The surgeon says the I've got about a 66% to 75% chance of him being able to repair my valve, but we'll have to be prepared with a plan incase the repair doesn't work out.  I've got an appointment with my surgeon next Tuesday and want to talk with him about tissue valve (pork or beef) versus the metal valve.  They say the metal valves last forever, but I've got some concern about the blood thinners.  I've considered that 10 or 12 years from now valve replacement might be an outpatient procedure, but I'm just 49 now.  If the tissue valves just last 10 to 12 years (what I was told by doc), I'd probably need three or four and that's just to the point that I give up the Harleys for a Vette.

I'll plan to PM you.  I'd appreciate your opinions on the valve replacement.  I wish you the best on your continued recovery and hope that your back in the saddle sooner rather than later.

Thoughts & Prayers,
PHAZE

Thanks everyone. I hope to meet you all someday. :2vrolijk_21:

Johnny, our prayers will be with you and your wife.
The surgery itself wasn't too bad, The worst part of the recovery for me so far is the Catch 22 of needing to cough and do breathing exercises to prevent pneumonia yet with the wired together sternum it hurts like heck to cough.
Also not used to being the one needing help, I usually am the helper.
Ride safe everyone,
Dave

Been there, done that! Grab a pillow and hug it against your chest. Hope you feeling better, you should notice some improvement everyday now.
Hang in there bro, the hard part is over. :2vrolijk_21:

I got your PM PHAZE and will send you my info.
Thanks again everyone for your kind words, support and prayers since most of you have never met me. I appreciate the brother/sisterhood that is shown on this site.
I enjoy seeing and reading about everyone's adventures and rides since I am not ready to ride yet. Seems like many of you have been in this spot before due to illness or injury and we all can relate. It's great to find out that you can return to a normal riding life. (If it's considered normal?) :huepfenlol2:
PHAZE we will talk more on the phone, but for those of you on blood thinners due to this type of surgery and getting an artificial valve I have been signed up for a 5 year study program to evaluate the amount of blood thinners the FDA reccomends vs. experience with my particular valve and it's use in Europe and South Africa where the thinners are very seldom used long term and there was very little problem with blood clots. This study may lead to a reduction in the use of thinners over time in the U.S. :nixweiss:
You folks are right, the pain of coughing is getting a little less each day
and I am starting to regain some mobility and endurance.
Thanks again everyone,
Dave

Dave,

I enjoyed talking with you.  You sound great and especially after hearing what all you've been through and that the surgery was just a couple of weeks ago.  Keep your chin up and I know you'll be back in the saddle before you know it!  We'll talk again soon.  After the 30th, we can compare scars.  I'm guessing that you'll win!

Well folks my wife just called to inform me that a coworker's husband was my age died suddenly in his car on the way to work.
He had what the doctors diagnosed as respiratory problems and sent him home with antibiotics. They now believe he had a heart attack. He had the shortness of breath and no prior history of heart problems.Just like me.
As much as I hate going to the doctor, I am grateful for the doctor not perscibing meds over the phone like I wanted at first. Surgery was no fun and recovery is slow at times. (Still awhile before I can drive and even longer to ride) But it beats the alternative.
I know the ladies are better at visiting the doctor usually then men but guys don't take chances with your life!

Dave, we are all so happy you saw your Dr., got the right diagnosis, had the surgery you needed so that you can ride with us in the future.  Keep up getting well.  I look forward to seeing you later this summer.   :cherry:

Dave,
Sorry to hear about your wife's coworker. Your statement about males and doctor is true for many of us males. For the longest time I wouldn't go to a doctor for regular checkups, and would have to be really sick before I would go then. Preventive maintenance and early detection of any known medical problem is worth its weight in gold. We all should be getting yearly physicals and as we reach our 40's/50's there are other exams that should/will be added to the yearly physicals. The only way our bodies or anything for that matter will last is we have to take care of them.

How true guys.  I'm a procrastinator, feel great, overweight, eat what I want, etc.  Wife had breast cancer found on her first mammogram, sured with surgery and treatment.  Still I didn't go.  Friend caught colon cancer in exam at 60, resolved issue, turned up on lung at 62, started treatment, passed away 2 months later, and he had been calling all of us to get in and get checked, still I didn't go.  Good friend 57 found prostate cancer a year ago, had it and lymph's removed, clear now, still I didn't go.....are we getting the picture?  Remind you of anyone you shave with in the mornings?

Anyway, went to the doc a couple months ago things looked OK.  Needed to get blood work up.  Still procrastinated, finally fasted for the 12 hours and got it a few weeks back, three days later came the news, all clear, PSA's, Cholesterol etc.

So to all my procrastinating 50 something or ever worse 60 something brothers (and sisters too) out there, get off your sorry you know what and get a check up, I don't need to lose anymore friends from preventable illness.

Dave,
Tragic about your wife's co-worker's husband.  I'd somehow managed to slip into the "guy" mode again after my MI and bypass 13 years ago and told my wife when my "gas" pains started a couple of weeks back to just give a couple of TUMS and it would pass.  She finally put he foot down and drug my stupid a$$ to the ER.  Yep - burst appendix.  Slow healing process, bro, but we'll both be back.  We'll have to wait a spell for a get together in W'burg like I'd suggested earlier.  Hey - at least we can compare "zippers"  ;).
Hope you're continuing to do well.  I'm on the mend, but the docs keep talking about "weeks" before I can ride :(.  New Jester just sits there whining (not as much as me, but I can still her...).
Be well friend,
Tony

Well so far so good,
I am healing well from the surgery but my heart was still out of rhythm after several attempts at Cardioversion before and during my surgery.
Two days ago they did an outpatient Cardioversion and had to shock me three times but finally got my heart in a proper rhythm. It has lasted in normal rhythm so far and I have to take it easy for a couple of weeks to keep it from going back into afib. One heck of a diet too, I have lost about 30 lbs. so far.
Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers everyone.

Wow!!! :vrolijk27: Glad to hear they/you are maintaining a good rhythm now. Cardioversion is not the most comfortable thing to endure. Congrats on the weight loss keep up the good work, you'll feel better, and your heart will definitely appreciate/like it. :2vrolijk_21: Just think of all that extra HP/TQ you are going to have when you get back on your bike w/the loss of the weight.

Sorry you are having to endure all these painful procedures.  So glad it sounds like you may be on the road to a successful recovery.  So what is the diet, I may need to change to it.  Dave, hoping to see ya on the road later this summer or early fall.   :cherry:

Dave,
Sorry about the added issues.  Never any fun to have the doc's playing with your ticker.  Doc has cleared me and I can finally start getting some breakin miles on my Jester starting Memorial Day weekend.  Won't be doing Rolling Thunder this year - too many bikes, too few miles on my ride.
Still want to head down your way and go some place for a great big...salad  ;).  Good deal on the weight loss.  You'll notice a big difference when you can finally start getting a bit more mobile.
I'll let you know when we get ready to head down your way and hopefully we can get together (we can compare "zippers" - NOT THOSE KINDS - you guys!)

Well I can't believe it but I found out today that my heart has gone back to afib rhythm. They are increasing my meds and have to go back on June 14th. If not fixed by meds by then I will need another round of Cardioversion.

Update and info,
So far the meds are working. Heart is in Normal mode for now. ;D

I have been doing some short rides the past couple of weeks.
Went on my first Poker Run for Charity this weekend and it was great putting on some miles on the bike. Boy did I get sunburned though. 8)
I guess I need to pay more attention to the medicine bottles when it says watch out for sun exposure. Oh well the burn was worth it.

For those of you who need to be on blood thinners or if you know someone who is, there is now a home monitoring device that may be covered by your insurance or Medicare etc.
It is made by Quality Assured Services Inc. and the person to contact there is Ms. Renee Kumar at (407)563-2420 or her email at;
rkumar@qasmail.com
This machine works with a finger stick like a machine for diabetes.
Take care,
David

Dave,
Great news! Glad you're back in the wind and the ticker is functioning per the "owner's manual".  Still need to get down your way.  I've got to be in Norfolk on 15/16 July August (D_ _b A$$ attack) for work.  Maybe we can get together for meet & greet or meal if you're going to be in town.  Don't know yet if I'm riding the Jester or taking the truck, but will be there either way.  If this works, shoot me a PM and we'll figure out some details.

Great that you are starting to feel a lot better and that you are out on your bike.  You really have to be so very careful re the sun.  Check out some of the UV Proctective clothing.  Makes a huge difference and are usually pretty cool, wicking etc.  We went to Cabella's web site and they have a wide variety of sizes and clothing choices that offer some protection from the sun.  See ya later this summer, I am sure.

Dave,

I'm glad to hear that the meds seem to be working for you following the cardioversion.  I'm 2-1/2 months out from my surgery now and the meds haven't worked for me.  The plan is to try the shock treatment next Thursday and I'm hoping that it works on the first go around.

I know that you're happy to be riding again.  Hopes and prayers go out for your continued success in recovery!
