Riverra Pro Clutch
« on: April 18, 2007, 06:43:13 PM »

If any one is interested in installing a Riverra Pro Clutch with the hydraulic clutch, you will have to shorten the rod. No where in the instructions does it say that the rod needs to be shortened. Now the fun part.....

The tech working on Pete4584's bike measured out the rod and he found it needed to be shortened 90/1000.

I called Riverra and the tech there said to shorten the rod 375/1000. But he is very vague on this. He will give you the measurement but will be wishy washy on if it is exact or not.

The only difference between Pete's clutch and mine is that I am using a lock up which has a different bearing plate. I did not think that there was 185/1000 difference in the two  plates.

Both clutches will be installed tomorrow so will fill you in

Brian, between the two of us I hope we get one good clutch to get us to Nelson!  I'm thinking Kathy will end up towing us most of the way.  I spoke with Rivera's so-called tech rep and I think I would have been better off talking to a brick wall.  The more questions I asked the more vague he got, anyway, really surprising for a company that appears to produce a high quality product.  Even if they can't tell you the exact measurement, they should tell you how to determine the exact measurement in the instructions.  I think Chris has it right, at least there is logic in his thinking, but Rivera's input was pure anal extraction.  We'll see tomorrow.

So with that kind of support, can you tell us why we are interested in doing this mod with this company?  Hmmm.

Well to answer your question they make damn good stuff, the problem is their tech support staff is weak on anything that is non-standard.  There is one tech that my wrench deals with and he is very knowledgable.

Bottom line, my wrench was right on with the measurement and my clutch works sweet!  Test ride tomorrow.  Hogasm is having a little more difficulty in that he is using a lock up feature with his clutch so the measurement is different than mine.  I am sure he is working on it right now and will report out later.

Oh this SUCKS.  Cut the rod according to Riverra's tech and now it is at least 235/1000 too short.

Try again tomorrow with another rod.

Thought I would post some pisc on the install of the Riverra Pro Clutch

There are 2 different pushrod lengths:
     5 speed = 14.250"
     6 speed = 14.562"

We have done a few dozen of these now and we have found that each to require a length a bit different than the last, we too received some bad info from from Primo, if you cut the rod to short you can weld the part back on and re machine.  We had found that you need to remove approx 70- 90 thou worth of the rod for the 5 speed version the 6 speed is all over the place I would start at  50 thou and work from there.

I have a 5 speed and took 0.090 off.  It works perfect!

Riverra says that you need to remove .090" off the stock length push rod for a standard clutch pack rebuild.

If you replace the clutch pack and install a Variable Pressure Plate Assembly the pressure plate is different than one used in a clutch pack only change out. You need to check the piston throw and shorten the push rod to fit. To do this install the stock pushrod without the pressure plate installed. Use a dial indicator to check the clutch piston throw. Most have .235 throw.
Then bolt on the pressure plate and measure the distance of the push rod when the piston is fully in.
With this measurement take off .090 from the overall measurement and have the rod cut to that length.
When the rod is cut to length you will have to taper the end of the rod.
Then heat the end till glowing red and dip it into a jug of oil.
Now the rod is ready to install.

Put the rod with the clip on the new pressure plate and put it in

Primo sends two different spring plates. The black one is heavy duty and the silver one is regular duty.

Now bolt the Variable pressure plate assembly , or regular clutch pack
in. You tighten the bolts till they bottom out and bend over the tabs.

Check the length of throw of the pressure plate.  .050-080 is what you want.

One thing I did was replace the stock ring gear and starter gear to a 9 tooth starter and 66 tooth ring gear.

If I am vague on points I apologize for this. I don't write instructions for a living. If you do have any questions give me a PM and I will be happy to go over it with you. It is not a hard job it is just a PITA if you rely on Riverra to give direct answers. Just how I feel.
