SORRENTO, La. (AP) — Sorrento Mayor Brenda Melancon was booked with negligent homicide after a fatal accident on U.S. 61 north of Louisiana 22.
Melancon is accused of pulling her Pontiac Bonneville from the Ascension Civic Center driveway into the path of a motorcycle while attempting to turn left onto the highway on Sunday, said Louisiana State Police spokesman Trooper Johnnie Brown.
The Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with the driver's side of Melancon's car, ejecting both riders onto the median and killing the driver, James Pickholtz, 41, of Prairieville, Brown said.
Pickholtz was pronounced dead at the scene by the Coroner's Office, Brown said. His wife, Amy J.R. Pickholtz, 46, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge by Acadian Ambulance.
Melancon, 66, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Gonzales, Brown said. She was booked in Donaldsonville later on counts of negligent homicide, negligent injuring and failure to yield from a private drive, booking records show.
