'08 Fly By Wire Issue

When I start my bike, sometimes it will idle 1500-2000 RPM. If I roll the throttle closed, it will drop to 1000-1100 RPM. I've tried to determine where the problem lies and whether its a calibration issue or a mechanical issue at the throttle body. Is there a way to reset the TB position sensor or is this really the problem. Sometimes it idles perfectly, Any suggestions welcome. I setup an appt at the dealer for this week as I am nearing the 1k mark.

yes there is an issue with the idle setting but i cant remember the reset off the top of my head.will try to get it asap.

I was told 4 times to reset.  Also to prevent it from happening again, make sure you aren't moving the throttle when you turn it off.  It appears that moving the throttle to another position besides 0 when turning off can cause this annoyance to pop up.

It's all to do with the heat management system, the system remembers the last setting it was at. It helps if you let the bike settle back to idle for a minute before you shut it off.

As was I and it does reset, I've had to do it 2 x since I got the bike.

Hmm...I suppose I could be moving the throttle before I shut it down or when I backup to park. I will reset it and watch what I do. Thanks for the reset procedure.

The 0 position at shut down can do more then just help lead to an erratic idle.  Can also keep the bike from restarting.  If you are leaning on the throttle a bit when you hit the kill switch the difference between where it is there and the zero position it'll be at when you go to refire can be enough to keep the bike from starting.  Watched it happen, then demonstrated again for repeatability, to an FLHX sitting on a friend's dyno not too long ago.

Yes, that would be a more logical solution.  As soon as Harley incorporates logic in their decision making process, I'll be sure to make that suggestion. 

You would think that electronic engine control systems were some brand new invention with all the issues Harley has had in the past few years.  Should we let them know that the rest of the world has been doing this stuff for decades, or should we let them continue to sleep through another decade or two first?  And by the way, since they set zero position for the IAC and the ETC during shutdown, why do they still insist that we should let the engine light go out before starting the bike?  I can crank my cars immediately upon turning the key, and I don't have to be careful to follow any strict routine during shutdown either.  And this is with a system with many more sensors being monitored than what H-D uses.

Just an update...the on-off cycle mentioned above did the trick. She now idles perfectly upon startup.
