Gas Cap
« on: March 09, 2009, 11:42:49 AM »

Anyone have trouble with their gas cap sticking? Sometimes it's a real challenge to get the cap to pop up.

Warren,

Mine hasn't stuck, but the dress ring blew off while I was on interstate one day.  Scared the chit out of me.  Dean

:2vrolijk_21:I've had mine lock down rock solid - had to remove the dress ring to get access enough to release it.
Dealer ordered new cap as it is quite a pain to be stranded with a stuck cap.

My gas cap broke into three parts while about 150 miles from my dealer.  (Can you tell I screw my gas cap on tight?)  Was able to reassemble and eventually had the dealer replace it.  They wanted to just replace a rubber ring.  I have been getting a very small accumulation of gas at the junction of the seat and gas tank...not cool!

Dealer still has not been able to figure it out.

Also, the LED gas level readout (located on left and top side of gas tank) has yet to work accurately after two years and 20,000 miles!  Not sure if they will ever get that right.

My gas cap did roughly the same thing.  Stopped for gas once, took the gas cap off, and it went to pieces all over the ground.  I had to reassemble the thing everytime I stopped to fill up until the dealer could get a new cap in.

The cap is quite delicate, when compared to regular gas caps. Increase in temperatures will make it lock tight and difficult to remove. Also the mechanism to pop the top up might be soiled from gas or even polish residue. That will almost disable the pop up function. I suggest to keep it clean (wipe after filling up) and not tightening too much. Specifically if you fill the tank with cool gas during high outside temps. A drop of oil once in a while will help you keep it trouble free. Unfortunately it's not the best design.

Ride safely,

I've come up with what may be a great idea. I now carry a small plastic suction cup in my bag. It's perfect for turning/popping up the cap and does not harm the finish.

Mine has never stuck, but it has come apart in several pieces the other day sitting at the pump, never did figure out where the small o ring goes, and think it was stretched.

The o-ring dilemma on the flush mount gas caps can be problem. Some years ago I purchased a nice ratchet set that was o-ring base. They would lock-up and one finally snap. A shade-tree mechanic told me to lube them well with axle grease and wipe off all the excessive lube. The set has worked great sense. When I got my flush mounts install I experience the same problems as you guys. Before I destroyed the o-ring I used the axle lube. I does something to the rubber. I have no clue, and those problems disappear, forever. Lube the o-ring down as though it’s a baby’s butt and lotion. Then wipe it clean with a paper towel. It is like magic. I do this procedure every 5,000 miles.      :-*

So you can order just the cap? Arsehole dealers around here said i had to order both sides, Cap and led fuel gauge and trim rings, Something like 300.00, Guess what i told them. The cap has worked fine no leaks, But if can just get the fuel cap i will check into that a little deeper and get a new one.
