exhaust mount / saddle bag mount failure
« on: May 04, 2009, 07:47:04 PM »

Ive got an 09 SERG and the right saddle bag bracket that the muffler mounts to broke at the weld. With only 1000 miles on it it is clearly covered under warranty however the bracket is backordered from the dealer. After waiting for a few weeks now i asked them if they could temp. weld the bracket so i could ride it until the new bracket came in. They aggreed and had it welded. then they called me up and said that the headpipe was at the wrong angle putting too much stress on the weld and that it broke a second time just doing a test ride. His first thought was that i will need a new headpipe to fix the problemb. With all the brackets on backorder i was wondering if other people were having simmilar issues?

Sorry there is no picture of it but a broken weld is a broken weld.

nope, but sounds like you have other issues going on, have them order and replace everything on the right side.

Those head pipes are made in jigs...sounds fishy to me.  Wouldn't be the first time a HD service dept covered incompetence with bull$hit...just saying :nixweiss:

A more likely scenario is that the brackets are either under-engineered or poorly made, resulting in enough failures to cause the backorder condition.  If the headpipes were off enough to create this kind of issue, there should be obvious fit problems with the pipes and the heat shields right from the git-go.

Brackets don't seem to be the H-D engineering departments forte.  Ask anyone with an e-glide about the speaker brackets and the main fairing brackets.

If that were the case, there'd be a lot more people on the blogs bitchin about it.
