road king fairing
« on: November 05, 2005, 04:45:01 PM »

i know some of you have added "batwing" fairings to your road kings, i'm thinking of going this route for a winter/spring project.

things that come to mind:

1st and most important is it must look like it belongs on the bike and paint scheme should match an SERK

2nd must be able to hold a radio and a pair of speakers

3rd compatablity with HD parts ( windshields, deflectors and anything else an Electra might use )

so what do you have?
what do you like about it?
what do you dislike about it?

please upload pics if you can

Neal, I know someone who has one of these:

http://www.deadcentercycles.com/accessories.aspx

FWIW, from the front it looks as normal as could be.  From the seat, however, it is vomit over a V-Twin engine (though the guy I know loves his).  The radio opening's weather cover is pretty slick actually.  But the whole inner fairing layout is just esthetically asymmetric.

Also seen the effete little thing that Corbin offers.  Kind of a gay looking mini-fairing sort of deal (no offense to gay or gay looking people that are not Road King fairings wherever you may be).

Only one I have seen that did look proportionate and effective was from a manufacturer called Dragonfly Fairings (I think that's what it was).  Saw it at vendor's site at a rally a couple of years ago.  Just did a quick look and couldn't find an address though.  Will try later when I get back and see if I can find it.

i saw them in laconia, it looks to be a well thought out product, they even say they can paint to match the FLHRSEI flames

it seems to be the one i keep going back to but i'm looking for feedback in stead of just going by a sales pitch

Been very happy with it. They did a lot of work on these fairings. They did a lot trial and error on the radios. They had a hard time finding a cd unit that didn't skip. Some cd player skipped just from idleing. The radio in the fairing is a Eclipse. They discovered it when a kid told them about it and said the kids at car shows were using it in their cars to show how loud the steros were. He said they didn't skip. Hoppe ordered one and tried it. It worked. It mounts on the same mounts as factory winshield. Has one electricial connection to undo. Very simple. Paintwork in Loves Park Ilinois did the paint.

If you want to use a harley windshield it will work but you will need to drill two holes on the windshield. I was going to put a Harley flame windshield to match the rest of the bike but at $150 compared to $50 for the windshield from Hoppe the flames just didn't seem that important.

I like it ! Is there easy access to the inside of the fairing to install a hidden antenna, radar detctor receiver, etc. ? I've seen on on a local '03 SERK and it doesn't look too bad once you get over the shock  :) Practical for longer trips and easy to remove for the leaner RK look, I like it in theory at least. Strange they didn't offer tour-pak in '02, but believe it was related to the paint and delivery issues they were having back then.

It already has a hidden antenna plus it is sirus compatible and they can install the hidden antenna at the shop for that. It comes apart pretty easy and adding a power source would not be a big deal. Go to their website and they show an 03 with this fairing.

Removing the tach would be unfortunate.  But with all that fairing space above the radio you'd have alternatives.  That'd be a cool place to mount one of the Dakota Digital tachs.  Could probably even do their larger tach in the center and flank it on each side with 2 or 4 smaller instruments.

reading the FAQs on the dragonfly site they say their faring will sit over the tach, no need to remove it. they will also cut 2 openings for 2inch gauges one on either side of the radio,

maybe a tach on one side and an oil pressure on the other...............

Anything out there that will allow the use of the existing tach?  So far, dragonfly goes over the tach (and covers it up) or Hoppe that you have to remove it.

dragonfly has a relocation bracket

i was thinking if you can cover the existing and tap the signal wire for one in the faring then when you remove the fairing you still have the existing tach

That would be pretty slick.  Just the power plug and a signal wire to unplug.  Are you thinking of cutting a hole in the fiberglass and flush mounting a tach?  It looks like there is room above the radio on both Hoppe and Dragonfly.  Just wonder if they are deep enough in that area?

The tach on the SERK mounts with one screw in the bottom, the problem is getting to that screw.  If it was easier, you might be able to transfer the entire tach guts back and forth, thus maintaining the look of the gage.

TB, you might take a look at the Cycle Visions kit from Drag. Have you seen the conversion that they do for the Vrod ?

I decided to just buy a FLTRI, and save all of the hassel...

WD,

Thanks for the info.  I checked out the site, pretty cool conversion for V-Rod's but very pricey.  I see now why you bought the Roadglide.  How are you liking it?  I rode one for the first time a couple of weeks ago.  I was very impressed (thus why I am looking at fairings).

Neal,

What's you opinion of Dragonfly vs Hoppe?  Looks like the Hoppe fairing has 4 speakers vs the 2 on the Dragonfly.   From what I have seen from you, it looks like the Dragonfly might be easier to fit with a tach.  Thoughts????

i have seen both in person. and my opinion was that the 4 speakers looked out of place, where as the dragonfly looked more like a stock fairing and can even mount fairing mount mirrors.

i got all winter to do the research though

naitram,
I saw the dragonfly at Laconia myself, was thinking for the Heritage. I agree with you as for the speakers on the Hoope. The dragonfly looks a bit more stock and more room to add-in what I wanted.

The fairing in PurpleSEI's pics looks like it's got metal brackets to attach it to the bike. The Dragonfly has a big thick fiberglass brkt that's part of the inner fairing. Am I seeing this right, because if I am the one that Purpleman's got has gotta be stronger.

Ordered a Hoppe on 12/22/05  As I mention above, I did not like the ideal of the attachment brakts being made of Fiberglass as well as how thick they are. Will let everyone know how the Hoppe works out as I go along. Fit anf finish first, test rides and then off to paint.

Fairing came in yesterday. Looks good, hot wired the stereo, popped in Tina Turner's "Simply the Best" sounded great. Quick question ? Why the metal spacers and warning about not using factory rubber grommets ? Fit is good,. Well made product. Off to the painter this week, and photos when it's done

From what they told me at Hoppe last year when they installed mine they explained that the local police departments were using this fairing and when they had people pulled over on the interstate the wind picked up by a semi traveling at 65 mph actually blew the fairing off forward. The groove between the washers is a few thousands less than the thickness of the bracket. Tightened down, the fairing is going nowhere. Plus its sort of makes it harder to steal. Works great.

Hey Purpleman Did you by any chance rig yourself up a set of rear Speaker pods to go with this ? I have a color matched King Tour-pak and was thinking of buying a set of rear pods from Dragonfly sells em cheaper than H-D With 200 watts of power up fromt, would I need another amp for the rear ?  I notice the H-D kit contains an amp.

I tried awhile back, They will fit - - - sorta, kinda - - like aftermarket parts 30 years ago, A little work here and there and you're good. Of course they require bolt removal and are not quick detachable, but yeah, basically they work. I could not find a used one in good enough shape. Maybe V-Twin or one of those catalogue companies has parts for them. The one I had I gave to a bro with more patience than me. The Hoppe and Dragonfly units are about $600 without a radio. Since the ones you are asking about don't have a radio it'll be interesting to see what you end up spending.  Let us know

weeeeeeeeeelll   both Hoppe and Dragonfly tell you they're quick detach, but you gotta wind down the acorn nuts against metal curbs vice the rubber grommets so it's not quite the same as the stock windshield setup, but it's still fairly quick and easy. I was looking for a set of new RK windshield brkts to retro fit to the old FLH fairing when I decided to go this route. Being a Maine-iac I like the Yankee enginuity thing, but old age and a few dollars to spend have made me somewhat of a  "the hell with that noise, I'll just buy this thing and save myself the hassle" type

Nait, that bottom line makes me feel a little less guilty about the money I've dropped lately changing Gertie into the full Elvis edition. (used bikes require great amounts of cosmetic surgery in order to establish dominence over previous owner's viewpoint)

I was thinking the other day - - - ain't it a shame they don't have a biker version of the McGuire's show "Car Crazy"  Then we'd all have something to show the women in our lives to say " see honey, I'm not that bad "

When I see your bike this spring or sooner Naitram I will make up my mind if that is the route I want to take. The pics in this post show the front view  and I want to see it from all angles. I love the way it looks with the matching paint. When you get it back maybe I'll take a drive(hopefully a ride) up to see it. Later, Q

Now, those pics have me thinking about some more $'s. Just relocate the turn front turn signals and mount mirrors on the fairing, and re-install tach somewhere, oil press and oil temp gauges in fairing.......hmmmm.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I bought the Hoppe fairing because I felt more confortable with the metal brackets, but Dragonfly makes a nice tach relocation brakt that clamps to the speedo. I bought one of those for my tach. Ridden 35,000 miles on two different 03 SERKs without any other guages, I'm good.

Yeah, the 2" tach may work installed the fairing, but it's not supposed to work with FLHRS-series. Hopefully the wiring is pretty straightforward, MOCO doesn't always follow logic in that regard. But relocating the existing tach with a quick disconnect and the bracket may be the way to go. I like to see both oil pressure and temperature as far as supplemental info., but hey that's just me  ::)

if you relocate the tach to the tank console or replace the spedo with a como unit there are lots of options for 2" guages to do oil pressure and temp
i htink the FLHRS note is because of the mini deflector on an RK Custom not for wiring reasons

That picture from the front looks sharp Spider.  How much adjustment do you have in it's mounting?  Might look even better if you could tuck it down closer to headlamp so you didnt' see so much of the original nacelle in their behind it.

That's where the power cord plugs into the fairing. Simply three wire affair with a nice waterproof screw type jack.

Could you use one of the pics I sent for the whatchmacallit below my sitename, tired of looking at that factory pic  Elvis is waaaaaaaaaaaaay better looking

The reason there are no pics yet of Elvis in Road attire is that I had to take the outer fairing shell back to the painter. Word to the wise. If you buy a Hoppe fairing you need to have about 1 inch of the insed of the outer shell painted to match. The fairing while looking exactly like the factory batwing fairing assembles differently. My guess would be that the pulled a mold off a factor model and then made changes so as to not run afoul of patent laws. In any event, the Hoppe is a great product, just be aware of this issue when getting one painted. The instructions that come with the fairing mention it and I told the painter, but he misunderstood and went with what he had done in the past in painting H-D parts. Still, the painter Norton's Custom Designs in San Marcos did a great job. You've seen his work in a lot of the magazines if you check the spec page.

Spiderman,

Elvis is in the house!  Looks great with the fairing too.  Needless to say, I'm stashing money right now, including selling a KLR-650, to buy a Dragonfly fairing and lowers.

Got a question.  How did you handle extending the clutch line.  HD has everything I need except that.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,
Check the thread in this section on Apehangers. Should explain everything you need to know on cables, hoses etc. Also give the Hoppe fairing a look. The brkts are steel vice fiberglass as is on the Dragonfly. The 200 watt stereo and quad speakers are awesome as well.  ;)

BigBrian, thanks for the info.  How does the fairing fit on your passing light hardware?  Any mods necessary?  Love the way those lights look.

Everything fits fine. No interference issues. One of the reasons I liked the Hoppe.

Head unit ?

i saw them in laconia, it looks to be a well thought out product, they even say they can paint to match the FLHRSEI flames

it seems to be the one i keep going back to but i'm looking for feedback in stead of just going by a sales pitch
I saw this one on dragonfly website.

back up to page 5 of this thread and you'll see two pics of the paint on mine. As I mentioned, a local painter did it. Cost was about $750-850, not sure exactly, he painted two complete saddlebags and the inner and outer fairing shells for $1,500   Anyway, I saw the Dragonfly in Laconia as well and found a shop here in Dago that sells em as well. Maybe it's just me, but I did not like the attachement brkt being made out of fiberglass. Also the brkt is sooooo think, I'm not sure if you can even put spots on with it

RAT S#^^ >:(

I was thinking of using that tach mount.  I need to rethink my plans and maybe consider one of those combo setups, but I hate the idea of doing it in black...  Just doesn't go with the bike.

BigBrian, did you remove the tach and riser cover as a unit and get a plain riser cover to replace the one with the 100 year anniversary logo and tach?

Naitram, did you have to get longer studs to accomodate the dragonfly and passing light backets?

It's good to see "TODAY" as last posted on the SERK group lately [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

well I haven't set up for the road yet, but the test fit before paint was without the tach   I have a stock riser cover with no tach brkt or holes  the previous owner didn't like the looks of the tach so it was off the bike when i bought it    wierd huh   since I don't play street rod when I'm playing UltraSerk  I don't think I'll miss the tach   the only time I plan on usin the fairing is on long one week, two week rides  that's like twice a year  i wanted the extra protection of the fairing and the stereo  other than that the windshield is good  only takes about 1/2 hour to pull the headlight and install/remove the tach      no big deal

nait  just to add part number 69227-04A the fancy spotlight brkt you have to use longer bolts, the dragonfly supports are like 1/2" thick dude  I know you can make it work, but you might want get some real long studs, cut em to length  and put acorns on the end of them

Ok  have you tried the fairing on your bike yet. If so, did the brkts fit inside the passing lamp brkts ? And, did you have more than one or two threads holding the whole works together ? If yes to both of those questions then you don't have a problem, if no to the first, you need to check and if no to the 2nd after you check then you need longer studs or bolts which ever you are using.

That's pretty much it. I had to go to longer bolts with the fancy passing lamp brkt. They come with it. My fairing brkts are almost a dead ringer for the factory windshield brkts. No problem IMHO had I bought a Dragonfly I would have needed longer bolts.

Bottom Line, Nait  You're there, I'm not  seeing is believing.

Adios

[highlight]minus the rubber grometts [/highlight]

didn't know you remove the grommets with the DF

Hoppe gives you metal grommets, but it also works with the stock rubber ones. Only reason for that is according to Hoppe , Cops that used the Fairing had them blow off forward when parked by the side of the road writing tickets due to slip stream of traffic . I tried it with the stock rubber ones and it fit good and tight and since being parked in the breakdown lane is not my normal riding habit I may give it a try without the metal ones.

Hey Big Brian,

Do you have a pic of how and where you bring out all the various wiring from the nacell?  Or could you describe how you did it.  I remember seeing the cannon plug on the fairing, but didn't followup on the bike side of the equation.

I figure it's a good time to buy my wiring piece parts while DF manufactures my fairing.  ESD is 4/18.

Thanks,

Steve

Why dont you drill a hole back there and get a rubber grommet to protect the wires.Just a thought.

trying to deside which fairing to order. like the looks of the hoppe, but not the four speakers. thinking of getting the dragonfly and putting the radio (eclipes) in it. will one of you with that radio tell me the model it is so i can get the real wattage from somewhere else. hoppe says 200 wattes but cruchfields says 14x4 if i have the right model. also would like the model of dragonflys. is ther any room for additional guages in each. :-/

I'm wrestling with pulling the trigger on a set of Dakota Digital gauges.  I would be buying a HLY-2002 speedo/tach combo, an air/compass/clock, and an oil temp and pressure combo.  Big denaro and something I am really thinking hard about.  I wish HD would make the silver-face combo speedo/tach and an oil temp or pressure gauge, but they don't.  :-/  :'(

Are digital gauges too far "out of the box"?  Are there any better for an '03?  Seems all the cool digital toys are for "04 and up.  >:(  Checked around the same companies that I am considering for my '72 Ranchero upgrade, but no motorcycle stuff except for Dakota... [smiley=confused5.gif]

Anyone on here with any lessons learned that might be useful before I engage the plastic?

Thanks,

Steve

Well, I pulled the trigger.  Found the Dakota Digital HLY-2002 on Ebay for $100 cheaper and the rest on Dakota's site.  Pictures to follow once I get the gauges and I get brave enough to install them.  Oh well, guess the Ranchero's digitals will have to wait.  Think I'll go Nordskog on those anyway.

Fat Elvis, yep Fat Elvis...

Hey Guys,
Veggin out from TMF at AZ Bikeweek, saw the questions about what model head unit Hoppe installs in their RK fairing. Mine came with an Eclipse CD5425. It has a single disc CD changer, AM/FM with MP3 Decoder. The amp puts out 14W x 4 min to 50W x 4 max. Distortion kicks in long before you get to peak power. It sounds real good though and I am happy with it.
Some general impressions of having a fairing on a RK after doing around 1,200 miles with it this past weekend. First, the wind knocks you around more than a windshield. Wasn't sure I liked it much coming down out of the mountains into the desert outside of Dago. Got used to it after a bit and now I like it. Just be aware at first that a gust of wind will feel like The Great Biker in the sky is tryin to rip the handlebars out of your hands. Having said, that, running a King Tour pak with a windshield you get a lot of turbulence. The fairing rids you of that as it channels the air out around the bike. So that's a real plus. I thought it cut down on my mileage quite a bit, but we were riding in heavy winds doing around 80 on the way to Tombstone, so that had a lot to do with that. Coming back, we punched it up to 85 most of the way and my mileage was actually better. All in all, I am very pleased with the Hoppe unit and glad I bought it. I would recommend it to anyone who asked.

I had read threads that some units cd 's skipped. anyone have this problem? also, I ordered a lowrance iway 500c gps. the info on this unit says that it comes with a 1/8 plug that pluges into the radio and it will announce turns through the radio if radio has a place to plug it in. my friend has 05 electra glide hd stock radio and it pluged into it and worked fine. some of the radios i read about have plugs in them that will take xm radio or mp3. does anyone know if that will work? on hd radio the turn info will come in over the music and announce turns etc.thanks again  Dan :-/

i have some skipping with normal audio CDs mostly when coming to a stop or cold idling. not as much with MP3 cds, still need to try ATRAC format ( sony porpritary ) file sizes are much smaller so i figure les skipping

Being the electonic dunce that I am, I am not sure how, but the owner's manual on the Eclipse unit in my Hoppe says it can be set up to recieve Sirius Sattelite trnasmission  Don't care for Howard Stern and don't need a $13 bill every month, so it's moot anyway

most newer head units can do either Sirius or XM or in some cases both, usually accomplished by adding a plugin module to the back

because i know so little about electronics i must be having a hard time formulating a question. what i am trying to ask is. can you plug the gps into a xm or mp3 jack in the back of the radio and the gps work. (in fact this gps is also a mp3 player) it only seems logical to me that plug in the radio is only seeking a source so weather it is gps or xm or mp3 it doesnt make any difference. what ever source you plug in will play through the radio. but then again engineers cant even spell logic.

if the head unit has an input jack typically it is a selectable source, if your GPS is also an MP3 player then the GPS should give voice directions priority and interrupt the MP3. however if your are listening to the radio and your GPS talks to you, you most likely will not hear it because you are not on that input. some radios may have a priority setting that if something comes through that input it will temporarily play that instead

I see on Hoppe website that they have add chrome speaker covers and chrome radio bezel. $83 doesn't seem unreasonable.  I think I like it. Anyone else?

They do look sharp.  I went with a Dragonfly, who does not offer any spruce up of the speaker area.

been out of town. thanks for all the replies. helped alot. spidermans commets on the ride was very interesting. anyone else find anything different about the ride after installing their fairing? harley dealership told me today that if i put fairing on that i would have to have work done on the forks to adjust for the extra weight. bike may wobble at high speeds. anyone notice that?

Hey Spiderman - I like the fairing - I will be getting one soon enough once all the money is saved up.  what eclipse stereo do you have - the cd2000 or the cd3000? - the reason I ask is because in order to listen to an mp3 player such as an ipod or in your case the GPS you have to upgrade to the cd3000 unit and run a input jack into the back of the head unit from your mp3 player.  The cd2000 unit doesn't have the capibility to run an external audio device.  Hope that helps

I can
t answer this since I sold the fairing to a buddy in Mississippi and bought a new 07 Road Glide. Elvis ( my 03 SERK) is now a total RK showboat with crocodile/ostrich saddlebags and seat and just an RK windshield when I need it. I was trying to have a one size fits all bike and be able to transform Elvis into whatever, but in the end, I felt it looked so much better without all the touring stuff. There's some pics on one of the threads somewhere of the bike with the croc bags and seat.  Anyway, best of luck with the mods to your RK. It works good and looks good.
