Bluetooth Module
« on: December 11, 2006, 10:50:11 AM »

Any reason not to mount the bluetooth module on top of the xm and cb modules which are already mounted atop the HK? Beats losing space in TP and long run of wires!  will Bluetooth antenna act up with gps or xm antenna on the '07 seuc?

thanks  Gene
BTW only 454miles and LR shock puked on ground...kept 6psi in it too.... dang guess being 135# didnt work it hard enough?

I am going to try it and see if i can stuff the 6' harness in also  in case i need to put it in rear. After the tourpak relocated 2.5" back theres a great place for it above the amp also if need be.  Moving the volt guage to the rain guage local was easy and the 2 oil's look good together on the right. the new oil temp guage needed to be wrapped with black tape to avoid excessive "red" light shinning thru the empty "locating" notch . The new guages mounting only uses the lower one. I KNOW...i am going to get the pic's!!   back to the gazillion "DEUTSCH" connectors...

Had forgotten how big that thing is.  Damn....

Will the connector on the main harness plug in to the bluetooth module directly?  Or do you have to make the connection using the subharness plugged in between the module and the main harness?

Well the bluetooth module works great stuck to the cb and xm modules in the fairing. the add -on storage pockets for the lower fairing covers holds the razor and motorola phone both and can talk to each other thru the head set and plantronics ear piece all at the same time [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] now i can call my self and answer back if i use all the vox....  dang sulu  beam uhuru  down to ride backseat!

Will this hookup cause any problems with the stock DVD/Direct-TVHD we have in our SECU2?

Had to rewire the stock wine cooler when I replaced the old temp gauge with spun aluminum oil temp gauge and don't want to go thru that again.

Thanks,

Mark

Rog, you're confusing washer with wacker or slicer.

OK Gene, here is the question: Is the Bluetooth worth it? How well does it work? Any background interference? Can people tell you're on the bike? And most importantly... would you buy it again? TIA, AJ

Well after using it and talking to a range of people fron 12 yrs old to 75 it is indeed worth it  IMO.  actually most think it is clearer and quieter(noise) than my plantronics 640 . the foam covered mic inside the full face I believe accounts for this. It was way cool talking clearly at 80. squeezing it on top of the HK was not bad at all once i realized it had to be located as far toward the fuel tank as poss so as to allow the fairing to go back without hitting it. now ir i could find a stacker cd to go under the tp!!   I do wish scrolling thru the phone book could be done with a  thumb switch instead of the face buttons as its tricky at 18degrees with heated gloves!!  i have 2 phones linked at the same time.
i would buy it again especially if they make the next raido easier to read at night. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I agree with ESJ and I can say it is every bit as clear with a half helmet and the stock mic.

Just an FYI to anyone watching this thread and interested but without an 06 or newer bike; the bluetooth "NCom" module in the new Nolan helmets works as well.

Wow  the battery time is quite acceptable  if you ask me. the wired lid sure leaves a lot to be desired. the voice command phones I have do circumvent HK's lack of dialing-thru-thumbs  feature but it would sure be nice to get wire free. just wish the Nolan had the SE graphics my 2 new moco lids have..  Wheres that air brush???? ::)

You have my curiosity piqued. How did you do it? What phone do you use?

The Push to Talk button move it I cant remember if its to SQ+ or SQ - one will take you to voice command and the other will take you to the phone book, then just used the SQ+ to go down the list and the SQ-  to go the other direction.

I used a Motorola  E815 My wife's razor works as well.

I thought Bluetooth was Bluetooth. The protocol would not change in between phones. Some manufactures may not incorporate all usable functions but they should be able to communicate back and forth.

The Katana is bluetooth compatable.

And yes...bluetooth is bluetooth...just a comm. protocol.

Morning. Just ordered the new kevlar shorty helmet from Harley. I saw one up close and seems to have the straps located in the right place for the harley intercom. I ordered the harness for the bike. They had the module. I can't have a full face or even a 3/4 here in hot muggy SoFla. I will keep this updated if anyone cares.
Can I ask a stupid question after this whole string that I read? Can you locate the Bluetooth mod in the fairing without removing or relocating everything inside the fairing?
Thanks

Orac, Gene shows a picture of it being done in the begining of the thread.

Maybe we could get Gene to give us detailed instructions on how to do it what problems he encountered? AJ

Bluetooth may be Bluetooth but I can guarantee that not all phones will pair up with all systems. Hence my previous question about Sprint and Katana phones. We tried several in our car before finding one that allow the number display etc. to show on the GPS screen. I'm sure the car manufacture wanted it that way since they already used "Verisons phone system" for their "telestar type service."
Harley isn't that advanced yet...thank God. (no airbags ... so no inflation to disable the ignition etc, etc.)  ;)

If you go to Harley's site and do a search for bluetooth then follow the links on that page they have a link / table of the supported phones and carriers.

http://www.harley-davidson.com/cp/moar/en/handsfree.asp?locale=en_US&bmLocale=en_US&WebLogicSession=F2wxhXyas7mS4XibKsYsmpxVjPX2vU1bSgixW2PM3I920KYOaEOQ!1722169369!181237810!7005!8005&HDCWPSession=ctlVF2wHB6yj3rL8lD9zTrLZv5BXVZjXK1hNGqBky6KH2rGvxNwf!1925963086!-2035964624

Question: I just ordered the module and was wondering if the passenger will have control over the phone also? With the passenger pluged in does it act like an extention phone where they can talk or just listen to the conversation? TIA

Or has anyone even tried this???

Just got mine installed. I put it in the fairing. Not alot of room. The extra harness was a joke. No one, including Milwaukee could tell me how it went in. It didn't come with any instructions at all.
As far as I can tell the Bluetooth does come over the passenger intercom. It also comes over the speakers unless you turn them off.
Harley says that you should install it in the tour pak but I didn't want to take up the room. It also says to keep your phone in the tour pak. I found the phone needs to be real close to the antenna so I have to get a handle bar mount for my phone. It won't pair from my belt. So far so good.

Has anyone tried Sprints Sanyo Katana? It works really well in my wifes Beemer in fact we each carry one. Now if I new if it would work in the Bike I'd go after the module.

The 700 as igofar indicated, works but not the phonebook.

Rjob,
Yea that seems to right. I just got off the phone with Harley and they gave me the site for compatable phones. My Sprint 700wx will not work. It connects and I can make calls but cannot see the caller ID and the phone book doesn't work. If I toggle to another feature like the XM I lose connection to the phone. What a pain.
I hope that they can come up with a download or something. Let me know if you hear anything or I will have to try to return the bluetooth mod and wire harness.

I actually bought a motorola phone originally and transferred my calss to it.

But I decided for the most part I wasn't making too many calls on the bike, mostly receiving them.  Sure did make my wife happy that she could talk to me while I was riding to and back from CC last summer.

I wouldn't have a bike without bluetooth again or at a minimum with Twolandrider's helmet setup.

Ok. I just got the BT box from Chicago HD. I'm excited! It looks fairly straight forward but are there any tips or tricks I should know about before starting this project? I want to locate it in the fairing. Will I need the "Overlay Harness" ? P/N 70164-06? What is it and why do I need it? TIA, AJ

I'm quoting myself here but...

I spoke to Gene over the weekend and he confirmed that I do need 70164-06. He also gave me some advice on tips. I'll post pix & details when I install.

AJ, when you do this would you post a pic that shows the overlay harness in some detail.  I know a guy here who is considering adding this to his Glide.  His tour pak has been made to be detachable and he runs with it off a lot so the module would go inside the fairing for him too.

I just want to see each end of this interconnecting harness and how much harness is actually there.  If it's just a pass through harness with male and females of the same connector it might even not be necessary (I know, not likely, but a guy can have a good thought).  Even were that not the case I'd like to see if there's anything that would keep it from being able to suffer a few feet of resection so a much shorter and smaller piece could end up being used inside the fairing.

Thanks!

2LN that is exactly what Gene said. Apparently the connector is under the seat which does not necessarily need to be used if mounting in the fairing. I will post the pix of the 'overlay harness' when it comes in as well as installation.

Thanks AJ, appreciate it a lot.  That big harness would (I assume) have to go under the tank and under the seat if one were to stick this gadget in the tour pak.  In the fairing and you won't have to pull the tank.  That in itself makes it worthwhile to consider the alternative mounting.  But then just want to see what can or can't be done about the big assed harness.  Easiest, simplest and cheapest it can be installed the better it will be.

Ok 2ln, here are the pix of the bluetooth during instalation.

This is the overlay harness pluged in. There is one plug that is not used on both ends of this harness. One side is a four pin the other is eight pin. They are NOT used.

Thanks AJ.  Definitely food for thought should I ever need to go this way.  Big hunks of the overlay harness not used and lots of lenght unnecessary.  I'm thinking that a slit opened insulator wrap, some happy snips with the side cutters, a tray of pins and about 15 minutes with a crimping tool could make this a much smaller and more manageable harness.  But then again not everyones fairing is as full of chit as mine has become.....

I tried to coil the 6' harness up and put it on top of the unit. This did not work for me. We wound up putting it around the headlight loosely. The main harness above the radio was pulled up to mount the BT on top of it.

This is the BT on top of the HK radio.

That little puppy is thicker than I'd hoped.  Would need some trial and error to know for sure.  But I'm guessing that it on top of the amplifier that is already on top of the XM module might not fit under the fairing.

Hmmmmmmm.....

Not surprising.  That main overlay harness that is primary for the Harmon Kardon systems is large to begin with.  Adding more on top of it is going to make this tight quarters no matter how you try it.

Sounds like you got it all in and working in good shape though.  Congrats on a productive day for all the bike chores.  So does this have you ready for spring yet?

You're right 2ln. I probably should have cut the harness to size. It would take a few minutes but, if there were other items inside it would free up some room.

It would be real tough if you had the Hog Wired in there. You would have to move the harness for sure.

Now for my next problem... I bought a Nextel Blackberry 7100i off ebay to work w/ this unit. After pairing it up it did not see my phone book. I then switched back to my i870 and it did not see the phone book but, I had calller ID. I think I'm gonna call HD or HK tomorrow on tis one.

This is me trying to find Gene's #. The coloring on the wires is very minute. I had the two yellow wires crossed and had no power. I called Gene and he took off his fairing to help walk us through it.

In my fingers is the 6 ft BT  harness  showing the route encompassing all the electronics and just 2 times around took care of its 6 ft length.  since it came with factory soldered pins at the end  , i felt to cut it down and add more places for resistance might be a issue, therefore just left it long.  It really dosnt take up much room this way  IMHO. :nixweiss:

This is the part # of the harness and  my thumb indicates one of the  unused plugs, index finger is the connector of the overlay and the 6ft BT. i located it up near the windshield and wrapped its legnth twice around.  8)

Hi Guys.....I just purchased the bluetooth module and am willing to try the fairing install.  A couple of questions: 1) How did you 'secure' the bluetooth module to the XM module, and 2) If I 'shorten' the overlay harness, how long should I leave it?  Thanks in advance for any info!    Rick

Plt, You would 'shorten' the trunk harness. I would only take out about 3 feet. The BT module is attached to the radio w/ the supplied velcro pads.

On another note...

I went to the HD seminar on the HK advanced radio. Spoke to the Harley rep 'Hillbilly'. As he was demonstrating the radio I saked him to pair my Nextel 7100i phone to the demo bike. He couldn't!!! This phone is listed on their page as compatable but it is NOT. I then asked if the was a list of known phones that were indeed worked and was told that "because the carriers change their software so often, we don't have a list but my Razor works." While he was demostrating it he dropped calls and had as much of a hard time placing calls as the rest of us. Needless to say I was not impressed. My advice would be to try the phone compatablity before you buy. AJ
