Down, but not on a bike...
« on: August 06, 2014, 03:30:54 PM »

Given my lifestyle and the fact that I commute, and recreate on my bike, you would figure the odds are that I would go down, HARD at some point. While I've had a couple of spills over the years, and even a couple on the racetrack, I've always walked away.

So.. Monday morning on my way to work I stop at a 7-11 convenience store for bottled water and monster energy drink (morning routine). Clock on my bike shows 0643...  Walk in the store, turn right, to the refrigerated cabinets for my stuff. That gathered I walked toward the check-out line.

As I approached the line, I passed the slurpee machine. Slipped on an apparent wet spot and down I went... the last thing I remember was feeling my feet slip, a blur of rushing images, then looking up, seeing an attractive brunette on my left and a guy I recognize as a regular customer on my right, a drink machine behind him and fluorescent lights overhead. I feel cold floor under me and a warm spot around the back of my head. A few questions later (do you know your name, what day it was and where I was I pulled my phone out of my pocket. My phone said it was 0654... was I really our cold for almost 10 minutes?. apparently yes. EMTs were not on scene yet, so I called work to tell them I would not be there and a brief of the situation, then called my wife so she could come to the nearest hospital.

EMT's arrive... same questions, they get me to sit up... I feel like I've been hit by a truck!.. a few minutes, I stand up... dizzy as all hell. The EMT's are trying to get me to let them transport me.. (FYI the ER is a mile up the road). I decline, indicating that if I was to leave my bike, even locked in this lot, It would probably NOT be there if people saw the owner get hauled away in an ambulance. I promised to be a good boy and get myself to the ER ASAP.

I call my wife and tell her I am headed to the ER, and to meet me there. Put a beanie over my bandaged head so I don't look like Frankenstein on the trip to the ER.

I get on my bike, equilibrium obviously off, and make the trek to the ER.. the most adventurous mile I have ever ridden!

I pull up to the ER... walk in the door, I'm taking the beanie off my head and the security guard asks me if I needed help.. I point at the bandage on my head and he waves me into the reception area... the nurses rustle me to the reception desk and check me in, then out comes a wheel chair... wheel me into the back.

First attendant comes in, I tell them its a "Y" shaped cut about 2" (based on what the EMT's told me).. they check it out, concur, and tell me I'll need a CT scan. ... while waiting, another nurse comes in and looks at my vest and asks me if I was wearing a helmet? WTF? I tell her, that this is NOT a motorcycle related injury and why is that question being asked? She continues on about how helmets reduce injury. I say yes they do, but is it reasonable to expect everyone to wear a helmet in a 7-11, how about when you're walking down the street?, or when you're driving a car? Remember this was NOT a motorcycle accident. DO NOT ASSUME! ( a lightbulb goes off and she shuts up )

CT scan, orderly cleans wound. ER Doc comes in, he is a motorcycle guy... says he heard the conversation.. agrees with me... I tell I wear gear by my choice.. he is the same. Even though he is an ER Doc he believes in the right to choose versus overregulation of personal choices. (Great guy, rides a 51 Triumph with a girder front end.) Anyway, nothing wrong in my head (hahahahaha) so he'll staple me up and send me on my way... OK, as far as no bleeding, etc. no pain meds, so I can be observed. Nothing that may make me loopier than normal.

2 days later I still feel like I've been hit by a truck. 12 staples in my head, Y shaped cut that will leave a scar, continuing headaches, blurred vision and nausea.

Here's a pic....

Good to hear you should be ok, but, coming from a public safety point of view - you should have taken the ambulance ride.

Most people don't realize slip and fall is one of the major injury causes. Glad to hear you are on the mend. Don't rush the recovery, head injuries are nothing to play with.

I can't believe you rode your bike- and I'm glad you made it safely to the ER.
That looks like it will be a pretty good scar.

Porthole, I mean this with no disrespect:

Screw public safety... There were sensitive documents in the bike that needed to be secure.

At least at the ER my wife would be there and I could make arrangements to have the bike moved from there.

If you knew the neighborhood, you wouldn't leave your bike there either.
