My Mods Thread - 2014 Road King CVO
« on: September 10, 2014, 08:40:56 AM »

Figured I would start a formal thread for the new bike...

The king is dead, long live the king!

Purchased on August 28, 2014 from Space Coast Harley Davidson - Palm Bay, FL

2014 Road King CVO in Tribal Orange and Galatic Black with Aztec shadow graphics

The deal:

25.5K for my '12 RGC CVO (no tour*pak - I gave that to a friend (Cory here in the forum), and I kept the passenger backrest, Headwinds fog lights (can't get those anymore), GPS, heat shields, fans...)

27,241.09 OTO for the '14 RK CVO with the following parts list:

4-Point Docking HW Kit in Black - 523000354
Large Rear Docking Hardware Cover Kit - Black (Need 2 kits) - 48223-10
Rear Saddlebag Guards - Black - 46548-03 (comfort styled not available in black )
Transparent Paint Guard Kit for Saddlebags - 11100098
Service Manual - 99483-14
CVO Supplement Manual - 99600-14
Parts Catalog - 99433-14
Long Angled Adjustable Highway Peg Mount Kit - Black - 50500167
Jiffy Stand Extension - 50000023
Men's PowerHouse Jacket – Large - 97429-14VM
1st service (oil/filter change)

Additional mods to perform:

Fullsac 2.0 muffler cores (and screens) to get additional sound from the stock units... I like how the stock mufflers look
Fuel Moto ceramic coated headpipe (take off from my previous bike)
Power Vision (take off from my previous bike, just need to buy the license)
Color matched saddlebag spoilers with light (ordered, not sure if I will do this, it will depend on the style... seems they changed the looks of them for the new bikes... I liked the style of the older ones better...)
Wards fans (take off from my previous bike)
Harleygoodies floorboard extensions (well vtwingoodies now - http://www.vtwingoodies.com)
Headwins Caliper Mounted 2" Lights.  Modified with LED lights.  These are also take offs from my previous bike.  And you can't get them any more (the caliper mounts that is, you can still get the lights)... they match the style of the muffler tips.
Custom Dynamics front LED Turn signals/driving lights (take off from my previous bike).  These did not required the load balancer on the RK...
AirMaster Reflective Smoke Saddle Shields - Küryakyn (also from my previous bike)
Harley finally came out with levers for the hydraulic controls... going with the edge cut units - part # 36700067
And I want a power outlet for the air compressor - for any emergency - part #69200091

I need better front suspension... going to change the fork oil for the heavy one and see if that helps... but looking for suspension vendors that have something for the new bikes...

EZ Up Wheeldock center stand - thank you Cory!! Gift from a friend.

Ok... a few more photos...

Naked!!

Finished with the wiring of the caliper mounted LED lights... I can switch them off with the toggle switch on the right...

Saddlebag guards installed

These came in a few days ago but the wife held them in hiding until my birthday... got them yesterday and they are ready to be installed!!

Floorboard extensions.  I have had them in every bike and left them for the next owner to enjoy.  Now the RK gets them as well.

I was looking at changing the spring locks in the bags for bolts... for security reasons and also to avoid those coming off accidentally...

Had the Baggerstds.com in my previous bike and left them there for the next owner (yes, I left the wrench inside the saddle bag :) )

For the RK, my plan is a bit different this time.  A friend had given me some butterfly bolts (similar to those in the photo) some time ago and they were just sitting in the toolbox...

I had planned to just get the standard leaf spring clip nuts  and use the bolts above, so that I do not need a tool to take off the bags.

Looks like the MOCO changed the mounts... they are thicker, they hide the clips a lot better than before... and it looks like I have to give it some additional thought on how to get a nut in there...

Quote from: Silverback;3008265
I haven't observed the fasteners on the new models, but if the end of the 1/4 turn pin is not exposed when it's installed in the receiver plate, then the screwdriver method of theft may not be effective on the new setup.  Perhaps The MoCo noted the problem and corrected the weakness?

--

Looks like they did... here are a few photos for those that have not seen them:

Look how thick is that part that the leaf spring nut has to go over... no wonder the normal clips will not work now...

Maybe we can reuse the stock clip and modify it with a nut of some sort... I will remove them to check... but more of a weekend project.

Thank you guys.  Not that many more mods planned... almost done here...

Need to order the levers, gaskets to replace the head pipe, power outlet for the air compressor...

I will change the fork oil for the heavy version to control the dive... if that does not work then I will start looking at front suspension alternatives.

Great looking scooter, man.

You mention that the signal lights did not require any load balancer, which I like by the way, not having any experience with the Custom Dynamic lights exactly what is replaced. Just the bulb? or bulb and wiring?

It is like replacing a bulb... unscrew bulb, screw in the CD Dynamic Ringz™ unit, install cover, done...

This is what those look like:

Edit: A better photo of the lights:

Glad you mentioned that. I thought I was just not used to the brakes on my RK compared to my RoadGlide!

I still have my Road glide. Picked the RK up this past May for a great deal in Tennessee while visiting Hogbreath and getting ready for Ribfest.
On a side note, I will be trading my 2011 RG Friday for a 2015 CVO RG. Can't wait!

Ohhh is the RG that you are trading!!  Got it!  :2vrolijk_21:

I did the install of the floorboard extensions.  Had them in my prior bikes and always left them on for the next owner to enjoy them.

Fullsac 2.0?

Are you changing the header pipe and/or removing the CAT?

Do you need to re-tune, or will the ECM adjust the tune automatically for this "minor" mod?

Anybody have audio files of the 2.0 vs 2.25?

Thanks,
Tractor Bubba

2", correct.  Went back and forth between 2 or 2.25...

Head pipe is the FuelMoto Ceramic coated unit... Kept that from previous bike

I have the Dynojet PowerVision from my previous bike.  Plan is to buy the license so that I can reuse it on the RK....

Sorry, no sound clips.  I listen to those already available, plus I had the same setup in the RGC CVO and it was good enough for me.  Not loud, just a deep rumble/bark.

That was a quick reply...  here is the plan.

I do not plan to install the PV nor the headpipe immediately.  Only plan to install the Fullsac 2" cores and the screens.  That is it for now.

I am not feeling the heat from this bike that I got from the RGC CVO... strange as they should behave the same... but the heat is not there like in the RGC... part is due to the lack of lowers in the RK, but I can remember the RGC being hot with or without the lowers.

I got the first service included with the deal... so the plan is to keep that bike as is (well, only cores installed) until the first service is done.

I am having second thoughts on the PV and the headpipes.  If the bike continues to work fine as is, why go through the trouble of installing the headpipes and the PV??  I want to give HD the least amount of ammo to deny warranty work... and, different from all my previous bikes, this time I got the extended HD warranty contract for peace of mind.

I know, I know... they have to prove that any issue is related to the changes I made... but I just don't want to deal with the hassle that comes with that... I must be getting old or tired of dealing with sh**t...  8)

Thoughts?

If the bike runs the way you want it to leave it alone and ride it IMO.

That is exactly what I am thinking... just the core's install for the additional sound and leave it alone... just put miles on it.   :2vrolijk_21:

I really think all the reading has gotten me into to trouble on these forums. My last bike I left the motor bone stock. The only mods I did were a PC5, exhaust, stage 1 breather, and tune. Bike ran great and I had it for 4 years without a single issue. My next bike I want to just do exhaust and have it tuned by my guy and I am going to ride it and keep it serviced.

Glad you mentioned that. I thought I was just not used to the brakes on my RK compared to my RoadGlide!

Missed this comment... The front suspension in the RGC CVO really needed an upgrade.  The front suspension in the RK CVO is much better... but still dives a little more than I want it to.  I think that the change to the heavier fork oil will do the trick.

I just did not want someone reading my comment, to think that the RGC and RK front suspension felt the same... the RGC would dive like a b* when braking... I was about to order progressive monotubes for it before the trade in...

LOL... yeah... something like that... it was the only thing that I had pending on that bike... procrastinated on making the change because of all that it needed to come out (or that I thought it needed to come out) to get them changed...

Thank you!

Took the time tonight to install the FullSac 2" CVO Power Core inserts and the CVO Perforated Muffler Sleeves... very good install video in the website.  So no sense in full documentation for this.  Just happy with the nice subtle increase in sound and bark.

These are the welds that you have to grind down... since I only had the dremel with some metal cutting blades and time, I just went with it.  Took 10 of those little cutting wheels to smooth everything out.

Forgot to take a photo of the sleeve but they look like this installed:

New core in place:

Also replaced the stock saddlebag pins that holds the saddlebag in place.  I made the change not for security as HD improved the mounts and I don't see how someone could get them out like before... I did it mostly to avoid the pins coming out accidentally...

Taking the old holders out...

Inserted a paper to avoid scratching the paint

Out it comes

New one in place

Reuse washer from pin and bolt in...

Wild Ones 10" apes with HD LED mirrors. Bars are so much better on my wrists. Huge difference...
Used stock clutch and brake cables.

jpdchicago Your bike looks great! I'm wanting to  add passing lamps and move the turn signals on my bike, 2014 CVO Road King. I am wondering if there were any problems during install or since? Turn signals work ok? Parts guys are telling me Harley says it won't work...I showed them the picture of your bike. Thanks

Everything works!  The Turn signals function when activated, otherwise the mirrors act as additional passing lights.
The tech who installed it has worked at that dealership for ever and knows what he is doing. I have no idea what he ended up doing but he came up with his own solution after spending over 30 mns on the phone with the Harley "help line" telling him it would not work.
I love the look and it gives me some additional safety, especially at night.

It is like replacing a bulb... unscrew bulb, screw in the CD Dynamic Ringz™ unit, install cover, done...

This is what those look like:

Edit: A better photo of the lights:

Did you also install a load equalizer? If not, any issues?

Load equalizer was not needed in my bike.  Everything is working fine.

Load equalizer was needed in my 2012 RGC CVO.  I was expecting to use both in the new bike, but that was not the case.  I installed the lights first and tested, after seeing that everything was working fine, I just stored the equalizer in the box of old parts...

No equalizers needed for my 14 either. I bought a set at Smoky Mountain HD in Maryville, installed them on the way back to Maggie Valley. The only think I notice is the signal light readout in the dash flashes fast, but the lights themselves flash normally. I talked to 2K while in the Valley and he did not need equilizers for his 2013 RK.

2013 and older need the load equalizer, the 14 and newer do not.  Put them on my 15 CVO before I rolled it out of the dealership the first time, did the same with the wife's road glide special.

They also make units to strobe your tail lights.  Been using them since 2011 on my 12, and every bike since, very good product.

I had the turn signals pictured above on my 2011 FLTRUSE. Didn't purchase the load equalizer as I didn't know I needed to at the time. Of course my turn signal would flash normal for 3-4 times then start blinking fast (which I didn't mind because it actually made me more visible I felt).

Anyway, this past year at Ribfest, I was showing lights to some folks and Bubba comes up. He turns on the hazards to see if they would flash fast on those as well and they did not. Then he turned the blinker back on and.....no more fast blinking! Blinked normal from then on till I traded it.   :drink:

Finished adjusting the new bars after a great ride. You no longer have to remove the whole front light in order to be able to adjust forward or back. I used to have to dismantle the front light to allow access underneath the plate covering the screws that hold the handlebars on my older road king.  Love it!

You choose chrome instead black for your new bar...

As you can see I chose a chrome theme for the top (back seat, passing lights) and now, new bars. It all fits together and looks really good in real life... and really shines in the sun...
Black bars would have been a good option too...

I went with what I had from the previous bike...so chromed backrest it was...I might have it powder coated black to match... But for now, since I seldom use it, does not bother me much.

Wachuko, love your build threads (I followed your 48 build thread on the other forum)! Thanks for taking the time to document all the details and share with us. I just joined the CVO brotherhood today with a 14 just like yours. Can't wait to get my mods started.

Do you happen to have the part numbers for the service manual and SE supplemental manual? I would appreciate it if you have them handy. Thank you!!!

Took the bike Sunday for the 1K service.  The documented the following: "Could faintly hear the inner primary bearing and race noise-will schedule at a later date to diagnose.  Also, rear tank fasteners were found loose."

I will schedule another service appointment soon..

Also, got the final part of the color matched saddlebag spoilers... the painted part.  The style is so different from the previous ones... I kind of liked the older style better as it actually had some style to it.  The new ones are just rectangular shaped...

I will post some photos along the way.  Just need to decide if I install them over the clear protective covers (that I have not installed) or directly over the lids...

Painted saddlebag spoiler light cover came in... setting up the lights to install.  I like the style of the old ones better... they had a spoiler style to them... these just look like a rectangle on the lid.. no nice curvy lines to them...

Light assembled.  Now to drill the lids.

Not done with the handles with lights (I mean, saddlebag spoiler lights)... but decided to remove the headpipe in preparation for installing the FuelMoto cat-less pipes.

Stock unit (goes to Cory since I used his when I removed and traded the one on the RGC CVO...)

Removed.  Will do some cleaning and polish of chromed parts before installing everything back

Take-off cat-less headpipe from RGC CVO.  Oxygen sensors in place

That is all for tonight.  Fighting a stupid cold/flu... need some rest.

Well... looks like I am done with mods for this bike.  Finito.

Cat-less headpipe installed.

Saddlebag spoilers with lights installed.

Only need to finish routing the wires, a good wash and detail... and just put miles on it.

Looking good!  I wonder if there is any advantage to the x-pipe vs. removing the cat from the stock headpipe??? On my last bike (12 FLHX) I cut the stock headpipe open, emoved the cat, welded it back up and painted it black. Got rid of a lot of heat. But, the stock chamber is fairly large and I always wondered if exhaust velocity slowed at the chamber due to shape/size. Any thoughts?

BTW, I used 2.25  inch fullsac baffles in stock CVO cans for that bike. It sounded great...nice rumble but not too loud to tour. I am probably going with the same baffles on my CVO. But I am going to talk with fullsac before making the final decision.

For what it's worth...I ran a fuelpak for a while with the above set up. I then went to the Harley Race Tuner and loaded the provided map for my bike/configuration. It was night and day difference in performance. The bike would pull away from a friend with the same setup (103, decat, fullsac baffles, fuelpak) even when I was riding two-up and he was solo. Prior to the change to the race tuner our bikes ran about the same. The race tuner isn't cheap but for $350 from an online dealer it changed the bike performance dramatically.

I had the headpipe from my prior bike.  So no additional cost.  Stock headpipe is heavier, so there is also some weight savings with this mod.  You bring a good point on decating the stock pipe and what that could impact the torque curve....do not know.

I have a Power Vision from my previous bike, just need to buy the license to be able to use it on this bike.

been contemplating these ..... now that you have them installed ..... would you still order them ???..

Nope...liked the lines of the lids better without them.  Too late now, lids drilled and spoilers installed. :nixweiss:

I am glad I saw and followed you post on these.  I had the old style on my 09 SERG, and on My 12 SERG, was really planning to add them to my 15 SERGU which I set the Tour pack up quick detach solo position.  After seeing them and your post I will keep the money in my pocket.  They do not look bad, but not as clean or as sporty as the old style.

Now seeing the saddlebag spoilers in daylight they don't look that bad and seem to flow w/the (outside) curves on the lid. Maybe just like getting used to the new saddlebags we'll need to get used to the new spoilers. :nixweiss:

Jury still out... too late for me... but that is why I shared additional photos of mine.  I still have to remove the bags and route/hide the wires (you can see them in one of the photos)...  At least it provides additional visibility for the vehicles behind me...

Rear view is actually pretty good, I like it.  Side view is ok.

Still not liking the front view.

Will have to see some in person.

Thanks for the pictures.

I have the Power Vision from my previous bike and was about to order a new license when I found out that the cables from my previous bike (4 pins) does not work on the newer bikes (6 pins).

So I ordered the new cable, a mount, and visor from FuelMoto...

I will get it installed on the bike this afternoon and gather the information needed to order the license.  I already have the new map ready to go.

Edit:

PowerVision installed and new map loaded!!

With the 2" core inserts and the new map?  Perfect for me.  I installed the display only to monitor how the bike is behaving and also to try out the auto tune.  Also wanted to see how tha fans worked on reducing head/cylinder temps and that can easily be monitored with the display.

Have not had the chance to test the auto tune function...only took the bike out for a 100 miles run.  But everything feels better.  Also want to monitor fuel economy just to know what I really get with my riding style.

Yes.  Easier to find and deploy and retract.   But have to say, with the Wheeldock center stand, I seldom use the jiffy stand.  Only in situations where the road surface does not allow for the center stand.

Look at his signature... he got it off a 2015 RGC... can't imagine the amount of parts and work required to make the change.  So yes, give us the write up on the modification. :)
