14" Yaffe Monkey Bagger Bars Installed - PICS!
« on: January 05, 2012, 02:50:51 PM »

Hey folks,

Just want to share some pictures of my 2010 FLHXSE.  I just finished installing 14" PYO MBB's, and had Gunslinger Paint color match my inner fairing.

If anyone wants details on the install, post up the questions!  Enjoy.

I think Gunslinger nailed the paint pretty well....

Master Guns:  I'm just north of Colorado Springs, in Monument.  I've heard of Lafayette, but can't recall just where it is.  I separated back in 2007, just after 8 years in.  My last assignment was at Peterson AFB.

As for the ride, it's like a completely new bike.  I was wanting a CVO RGC, but no more.  Just like the first day I brought her home all over again.

Going with the 14's I have full use of the mirrors, and I think they're even better than with the stock bars.

Thanks for all the compliments. I'm loving the end results!

Yeah, I hear you on that.  Wiring them up was kind of a pain, but i still enjoyed myself doing all the work. I can't imagine what a dealer would charge, or how shoddy the workmanship might be.  I managed to record accurate details of the pin outs, and have not had one issue with any controls.  I would hate to have to troubleshoot the 30 wires running downs inside the bars...work like this I just don't trust to a random technician.

Plus, with winter in CO, this kind of work helps keep me sane.  I've already used the snowblower about 8 times since October.  :(

Nice looking bike fish eye.  It also looks like you have J&M fairing speakers and an aftermarket head unit, how does the head unit perform compared to the HD advanced stereo?  What about hand control functionality, did you lose some due to the aftermarket stereo?

So, I did the stereo swap before MOCO debuted the iPod interface module.  That was my main feature I wanted.

I went with a Hawg Wired kit.  The bezel is anodized aluminum and quality is top notch.  They also make a cradle for the aftermarket radio to sit in,and it then mounts into the factory location.  Lastly, they have a stereo interface that connects to the stereo and the bike.  In this case, the Sony specific adapter replaced the wiring harnes that came with the aftermarket radio.

I do have the J&M 7.25" speakers, and an ARC 125.2 BX mini amp.  It is all the stereo I need.  Plenty loud, and super clear.

Hawg Wired's kits only lose one feature.  Automatic Volume Control.  With the amp installed, this should be disabled anyway to avoid distortion and possible component failure from the increase in power when the AVS kicks in.

Response from the handlebar controls is instant. I am very pleased with this kit, aside from the price.  BTW, my iPod cable runs down the cable trough under the tank, and I install my iPod under my seat.

Fish Eye,
Do you have pics of the bike during the project? I'm thinking about 13 apes on my Ultra, and have a few questions about any special tools that I may need to buy for this project.

Yup, Kent was the man.  He showed me a picture of your fender, you went with a Klockwerks nugget type if I recall correctly.

Right now they have my entire paint set for my 03 Heritage Springer Softail.  They're restoring all the paint back to showroom finish.

SuperShooter, I do have some pictures pre-disassembly, mainly for reference when reinstalling.  I can't think of any specialty tools needed.  I did buy a MitiVac Vacuum Bleeder for the hydraulic clutch and brakes.  Everything else was standard garage fair, sockets, Allen sockets, torx sockets, wrenches, pliers, etc.  I do recommend that you have a jack though.  I can't imagine doing this job with out.  Also, a torque wrench too.

If you have any specific questions, let me know.  I'll get some pictures posted up tomorrow for you.

Hey fish eye, what length and brand of hydraulic clutch and brake lines , and what wire extenders do you recommend?

Anyone else feel free to chime in also.

Thanks in advance!

I went through Drew at Dr. VTwin.  They're a forum sponsor at hdforums.com.

I ended up going with Magnum Chromite cables.  With the 14" bars, it was +8 all around.  The extensions were by Namz.  Initially I thought it was great that they came with connectors to mirror the factory wiring, but I ended up cutting them out.  Too long, and they were all at the same spot.  12 connectors at the same place was not going over that upper bend.

I soldered and heat shrunk every connection with marine grade adhesive lined heat shrink.....Also, on the 14" bars, I ran all the wiring through first, then extended the wires.  I believe I could have rerouted wiring under the batwing, but wanted to retain all the factory mounting locations for the clips.

About how long in total did the whole job take?....

It took me 4 weekends from start to finish but I also did a few other things while I had the tank and fairing off. I think you SESG guys have one bend easier than a SERG does since your bottom corner is not another acute angle like the top. The wire pull was one of the worse projects I've ever tackled and hopefully it's easier for you guys.
Be prepared to experience frustration, anger, fury, wrath, and futility to the point of giving up during the right side pull. But again, that was with the RG bars.

I also had to take the time on Sunday's to attend Church for all the swearing and sin the aggravation caused.  ;D
I'm like the Op, I'd prefer to take my time and do my own work, it's not difficult, just tedious and time consuming.  Best of luck!

If you don't have any painting done, you could probably finish in one weekend.

Once I had my inner back, I think it took about two days of work, taking my time.

I've had quotes from 8 to 11 hours for a shop to do and that is with 10" bars.

ABSOLUTELY outstanding--well done!!!  If I had high confidence I could get the HD Heated Grips I installed on my SE3 before delivery I'd go with the 14" Yaffe Bars as well in a heart beat--REALLY looks sharp!   :2vrolijk_21:

Hello , nice bars !

Any tips on the brake line ? Did you change the upper brake hose only ? did you remove the tank ?

Sorry guys, I haven't been on the forums for a few days.

As for the brake likes, I replaced everything for the front.  Magnum has a two-piece upper line, if I recall correctly.  And I also replaced the line from the ABS module to the calipers, with a 1-piece prefabbed line from Magnum as well.  All finishes are the Sterling Chromite II.

For the lines themselves, the trick is to keep ABS fluid in the ABS module under the right side over.  I drained the master cylinder, and ran the upper line from it to the ABS block.  Before connecting it, I used the vacuum bleeder to pull fluid through, to avoid introducing air into the ABS module.  Got it secure, and ran the lowers.  Keep in mind to check the fluid level in the MC at all times.  Gravity will cause it to drain...If you do get some air in there, it's no big deal, just need a dealer to bleed the brakes.

Moose and Mark - Thanks for the compliments.  I decided I'll be going with Gerbing heated gloves.  With two bikes, it's easier and less expensive to have heated gear than buy and install heated grips twice.  On the FLHXSE, the fairing still does a great job moving the wind past my hands - they really don't get cold.  On my Heritage Springer, with no fairing or shield, my hand freeze really bad as they just sit in a headwind the whole time.  Glad spring/summer is here.
