Wish me luck this weekend on doing cam install
« on: April 03, 2020, 02:58:01 AM »

Well think I’m gonna attempt to change my cam and pushrods out this weekend. Suppose to be raining all weekend so figure good time to do it.  I’ve never done this before and little bit nervous about doing it. Just gonna take my time and go for it.  Been watching some videos on doing the install and doesn’t look too bad.
Plus I downloaded the service manual for bike also.

its pretty straight forward, one other little tip though, when you change out the bearing for a good one, put it in the freezer over night, dang thing will almost just slip right in!!

Update didn't get around to attempting the cam install. Just can't get motivated to start on it...Gonna call around and maybe find a shop to do it.. But most places are shut down or short staffed due to this coronavirus stuff...

Well I started on the cam install. So far have exhaust off, pushrods cut & lifter covers off. Now need to remove cam plate & cam and oil pump and then R & R cam bearing new oil pump & re install it all.

Question do I need to oil the lifters or just put them in & button it all up..????

how many miles on them?

its all open already, so its cheap insurance to just do them now.

Most guys will let new lifters soak in clean engine oil for a day or two before installing.  Some of us more anal guys will ensure they are full of oil but that is not necessary.

If you are reusing the old lifters just make sure the rollers are oily and the bodies have a film of clean oil before sliding them back into the bores.

I’m using new lifters. Ones I’m pulling out only have 3000 miles on them but since was opened up may as well change them.  So I can just drop them in then without filling with oil. ??

Yeah they'll rap a bit first fire up until the oil pressure fills them up with oil but as long as you soak them overnight you'll be ok.

You don't necessarily have to stand them up.

You can heat the oil for a bit better and faster penetration.

I put mine into a little cylindrical, oil-filled glass jar with a hole I popped into the cap.  I use my mityvac to pull and hold a vacuum which speeds up the process (especially with hot oil).  I'm admittedly a bit neurotic though.

You'll be fine.  Doing this job the first time is a bit unnerving, but if you're mechanically inclined and follow the instructions it's not terribly difficult.  Take your time, especially with the lifter preload adjustment.

Yes gonna take my time as I’ve never attempted anything like this before. I’m just gonna do 1 pushrod / lifter and let bleed down before doing next one.

get an oil can and try to squirt oil in the feed hole on th side of the lifter......pump the oil can until you see oil come out the top of the lifter, oil the bearings in the rollers too.

Is it normal for the lifter cover not to have a gasket between it and the lifter block. When I took mine off there was no gasket. Just metal to metal. Didn't see any kind of sealant either. I called dealer & they don't know. Said the parts blowup on computer shows a gasket... I down to R & R the cam bearing now. Got the cam plate & cam & oil pump out.. Those damn bolts some were tight as heck & others broke without any effort... The bolts that held down the lifter cover were a SOB to get out. They were tight...

Not sure about the gaskets on the M8.  Twin cams have gaskets.  If the parts book shows a gasket I'd likely install them.  I always spray a shot of brake cleaner into all the mounting holes, let it evaporate, then blow them out with compressed air.  Reinstall the bolts with a drop of blue loctite and torque to spec.

Should be a gasket.  25700362.  Talking about an M8 bike right?

Yea 2018 CvO limited M8.  Well mine didn’t have any gaskets.

Well.... guess there are two ways to consider that:

1) Damn, HD's finish machining on cases and lifter blocks must be smooooooooth!

or

2) That's some damn fine QC they got going on there.

Actually, and I doubt this is the case, it could be a third option.  They could use a chemical sealant/gasket for factory assembly then offer the gasket for field service.

Update. Got the cam bearing out and replaced with new one. I’m using a knock off Tool I got off eBay and i turned when installed bearing till it bottomed out and couldn’t turn no more. I measured the original bearing depth before removing and when I installed new bearing it’s just a fraction not as deep hope won’t be a problem.

I have had pretty good luck filling them with a syringe held against the feed hole. Just push the oil till it come out the top.

I use a Mason jar with a bulkhead fitting on the top. Use my vacuum pump on the serdi to pull the jar down until there are no more bubbles.

Just couldn't get my fingers in there to adjust them correctly. I wasn't using S&S Quickies either. Didn't want to fire it up & there be something out of adjustment & then Kaboom...
