Las Vegas Day Rides
« on: June 27, 2006, 10:09:37 PM »

I am seeking the wisdom of those that have knowledge of the Las Vegas area...Here's the position.

I will be attending an event in Las Vegas and have 28 contiguous hours of free time. Since I must stay in Las Vegas for the night, there are some limitations.

I am willing to ride long and hard, however do seek some free time to enjoy the surroundings outside of Las Vegas...been there done that numerous times. I would be renting a bike from a local dealer in mid-late July.

Here are some of the choices under review...

     -  Hoover Dam
     -  Red Rock Canyon
     -  Mt. Charleston & Lee Canyon
     -  Grand Canyon North Rim
     -  Grand Canyon South Rim

With all of the opinions/experience out here, I am seeking your wisdom.  Are there others to consider?

Wish I had more time/money, however that is just not the case.

Thanks for the impute.

     -  Hoover Dam - - - - - -- - - - - -For sure It's about a 45 minute ride south east of Vegas
     -  Red Rock Canyon- - - - - - - - -I guess if you think Red Rocks are cool
     -  Mt. Charleston & Lee Canyon- - Don't know anything about it
     -  Grand Canyon North Rim- - - - -On Fire as I type this tonight
     -  Grand Canyon South Rim- - - - -The best side of the Canyon IMO but a long HOT ride

Try to remember that it routinely hits 110-115 degress during the day in Vegas this time of year. The last time I was in Vegas in July, it was 100 at 9PM although once you get out of the city the temps drop into the high 70's. I would suggest plotting a route that follows the Colorado River to Laughlin for a cool night ride. One thing that sounds silly, but is really cool is to ride the strip at night on a bike. The strip feels like a living thing when you are on a bike riding through it.

I'm assuming you know which Casino/Hotels to check out.

Spiderman,

Thanks for the impute...As to the hotel matter, not much choice there given the company's convention...As for Vegas, I have traveled there on numerous occasions and have little interest in the local area any more.

I will take your suggestions under advisement.

Thanks.

Jock,

There is another option in my opinion:  Ride up I-15 for two hours, exit at Hurican and go through Zion Park.  Then head North to Bryce Canyon.  The round trip from Vegas is about 600 miles.  Plenty of place to crash around St. George.  There is a nice place to stay over in Bryce also.  I think these to parks are exceptional.

I'd consider Zion & Bryce.  If you go early (sunrise), you can do Death Valley as well

Thanks for the impute...Something I failed to mention, the trip would force me to return to Las Vegas, therefore any over nights would not be the case.

Jock;

We did a long day trip a couple of years ago that was kinda neat. Crossed over Hoover and went to the outskirts of Kingman, Az. Picked up Rt. 66 and headed west through Oatman, Az. (wild asses begging in the streets) and on to Laughlin. Short little juant through Laughlin and back to Vegas. Hoover to Kingman had a neat little bar and ended up standing up for a fella as he proposed (again) to his wife. Rode w/ them the rest of the loop and had a good time doing it. Enjoyed the 2 lane Rt. 66 through the hills. Very desolate. Easy trip and lots of it in Az where you don't need a helmet. Enjoy whichever way you go.

Jock...Zion is a magical place, although when I was there, they would not allow vehicles in the park itself unless you were staying at the lodge (I was), but you can park and there are shuttles running into the park every 10 minutes or so. That was four years ago, and I'm pretty certain they have not changed those rules, as the traffic was getting so bad in the park, it was ruining everything for the visitors, as there is limited parking on the pull-offs....you're basically in a huge box canyon with 1k foot walls where climbers spend the night hanging from ropes in a sleeping bag harness.   [smiley=nervous.gif] The ride to the park area is great too.  Leaving Zion and going to Bryce Canyon is an unreal ride...and Bryce is like being on another planet, with some great riding through the park....you're on the rim of the canyon (actually, it's more of an amphitheatre).  The Hoodoos are the strangest thing you'll ever see.....HIGHLY recommended.  I liked it more than Zion.  There's another park west of Zion...can't think of the damn name right now, but starts with a K, I think...nice riding there too.

Jock, as others have already pointed out it's HOT in Vegas this time of the year!  I know some people say "it's a dry heat" and not as bad as the heat we have in GA with the high humidity. Bull S^&* !  110 plus is hot!  If I were you, I'd plan of leaving at daylight (or earlier) amd be back by noon.

hd,

Right you are!  If anyone doubts it, I suggest they stick their head in their oven and see how it feels.  That's a "dry" heat also.  ;)  I made that comment to a co-worker when he retired and told me he was moving to Arizona.  Saw him again a year later and the first thing out of his mouth was "You were right, hotter than Hades even with low humidity.  Now I just stay inside all day and go out at night".

Jock, if you have 48 continuos hours free, you may want to consider a ride across Hoover dam to the south rim of the Gran Canyon and then half hour ride south of Flagstaff (be sure to check out Grand Canyon Harley Davidson......that's where they have the restaurant where you cook your own steak.....that I was telling you about in Colorado) is Sedona.  Both Grand Canyon and Sedona are well worth the ride.

You can then leave Sedona and head back across the desert, through Jerome and back into Kingman and back to Vegas.
