Engine guards, anybody?
« on: May 13, 2008, 02:45:32 AM »

I put them on my new Black 08.  I don't really like them, but then again, I don't think I really pay much attention anymore.  Will the engine guard protect my paint if the bike is knocked over (or, if I am knocked over)?

Have I made it look like a touring bike?  I know, no pictures, but you know what it looks like.  No saddle bags, however.  Original exhaust configuration.  Still looks sporty.  But, engine guards?????  BTW, I am a fairly new rider with less than 2,000 miles of experience.  And, soon to have a 10 inch windvest on it.  Practical, but not very pretty.

You've already got it installed?  It might save some paint forward.  Less of a chance on the rear.  More importantly it might save your leg from injury sometime.

My brother is still recovering from a side impact accident from last June.  No matter what bike I have or how it looks will  always have a crash bar and some sort of wind protection.  It doesn't matter how it looks.  It matters that you are comfortable and safe.

8 years ago I did a 5o mph slide on my Road King. I was able to tuck in to avoid my legs hitting. The engine guards were ground right through from sliding on the assfault. Can't help but think they saved me from serious leg injury. The Muffman

I'm convinced.  Just vain.  I have also heard that they can help keep a hot pipe from burning your legs if the bike lands on you.  I had never thought of that before.  Thanks, everybody.

It's that ole dilema........look good or be practical.  Usually the two are on opposite ends and you just have to do what ya got to do.  You're right that the bike looks better w/o them, but they can really save the bike (and you) in certain kinds of slides.  I've seen it too many times to ignore. (I still haven't put the rear ones on my SEEG, but should)   :nervous: har!  :drink: spyder

Ya know, it may not be the look that you were going for at first, but after you hand the hiway pegs and spot lights on those bars, they're gonna look pretty sweet!

And they are definitely a good common sense addition.
