2008 CVO Springer Recall
« on: September 07, 2008, 07:25:40 PM »

Just purchased a 2008 Screamin' Eagle Springer 105 Aniversary Edition last week. I have less that 100 miles on the bike and noticed a small oil leak from a bolt under the heads in the left side. The dealer said that there was a recall on the bike and that it would be a 12 hour job. I have read that others have have experienced the same recall. Couple questions....What should I be concerned about related to this extensive repair? I saw that someone was considering putting new cams in during the warranty work. Has anyone done this? Was it woth it? What did it cost?

Sorry for all the questions...Been riding for over 30 years. This is my first Harley. I love the bike, but am concerned I may have bought a lemon.

They are all prone to leak at the higher temps they are programmed to run at (lean air:fuel mixture). The fix includes new head gaskets for that as well as an o-ringed center bolt to stop leaks down there. We all have lemons! But there is a fix, we hope.

Thanks Air-Cooled! I appreciate the reply. Dealer said I can still ride it while we are waiting for parts. Can't seem to keep off the bike. Major head turner, and a blast to ride!

I bought the same bike/color.I too have been riding over 30 years and this is my first Harley as well.I have 4000 miles on mine and no leaks, but I will be taking it in for the updates.Yours may not be related to the same problem.I had a small leak at a bolt when I got it,but they fixed it in 5 min,no problem since.I wouldn't worry about it being a lemon.Take it in for the updates and have them put some pipes and a SERT on there and have it tuned  on a dyno. I wouldn't fool with the innards.

Thanks drodgers I feel a little better. Have you added anything to your bike? Do you have any recommendations for pipes?

I have a 2008 FXSTSSE 2 with a production date that was the same as last date of the recall date (great luck). I had 1,200 miles on it when I got the notice. The only leak I experienced was the top center case bolt.  I did the upgrade at the dealer,  it went perfectly. They had the bike 2 days, and runs like a champ (actually feels a little smoother).  Now if it last I will be thrilled.  My heads never did leak.

I got the same bolt leak and since I didn't like the prospect of getting that oil to find its way to the final drive belt, I removed the bolt, and having nothing better in my garage I wound ten turns or so of teflon tape around, under the head of this long bolt, reinstalled it and that was the end of the story  :bananarock:

I will get the whole "improvement" kit (not recall) before the end of the year; head gaskets, ACR's, bolt ASO. In the mean time NO LEAKS  ;D

Does anyone know the production dates affected, So I can work out if my SE is affected I know i would get the dreaded letter if this was the case but as I live in England I am sure we are behind on getting informed.  Just like to know.

in my opinion, the recall doesn't address the real problems...excessive heat and cranking pressure

I read somewhere the SE 110 stamp on the 07 - 08 cylinders with a silver background are the early 110's on recall, dark backgound has recent fix. Probably late 2008 & all 2009 has the fix. My 2009 CVO Springer has the dark background so hope it is resolved!

yup! black badges on my heads, and I got the recall.

early '07 110's had the silver badges on the heads, they were changed sometime in mid '07 to the black badges. there are no '08 110's with silver badges.
I believe the 110 heads with the silver badges are getting the heads replaced.
mine has the black 110 badges on the heads, and I got the recall for just head gaskets, ACR's and crankcase center bolt.

my bike is in the shop getting the recall done now. I spoke to the dealer this afternoon, the bike will be done tomorrow morning! :2vrolijk_21:

just in time for a beautiful weekend! :pepper: :bananarock:

Update (10/10/2008) sorry for misinformation, just read below Duece Bigelow's 08 has the dark 110 badges and got the recall, so sounds like a crap shhot for 08's.

The reason for the color change of the badges was not related to the engine issues at all. There is no relation of the color of the badge to the version or built of the engine. Owners with bikes with earlier badges experienced them getting yellowish in color, and that was the reason for the change to black.

Question... Knowing that many of these bikes have a recall, why wouldn't the dealer take care of the recall work prior to selling the bike? It would have saved me and many others a lot of head aches.

If the bike in fact has a recall, as opposed to the "enhancement program", then the dealer is in fact supposed to perform the recall prior to delivering the bike to a buyer.  The recall notice to the dealers actually spells that out to them.  The "enhancement", however, has no such instructions from the MoCo.

I've seen used CVO's being sold by dealers without any work performed. I think the're just in denial and do not understand the leak happens for sure.

I have an 07 FXSTSSE, V&H pro pipes, Heavy breather and race tuner w/dyno picked up about 3 hp and 9 lbs. of torque.
Just had the 110 upgrade/recall. HD also covered having the rocker boxes milled for clearence during this fix. Thicker head gaskets have reduced the compression ratio which inturn has dropped the HP and torque below the standard numbers. Bike is not as quick, or as much fun, but temp is much lower.
Only bikes recieving new heads are the touring bikes,at this time. I would bet that the new heads are not as good as the ones currently used because they will reduced the HP and tourque far below the cuuent levels.
Tech said in side of my motor was as clean as a new one with no wear signs or damage. Pays to use Amsoil.

mine didn't have any leaks at 2800 miles either, but at 5100 miles it's like someone flipped a switch, and both head gaskets and the rear cylinder base gasket started leaking! :o
