Transmission oil Primary Chaincase
« on: January 03, 2010, 01:45:09 PM »

I know this subject has been discussed quite a bit but....Harley recommends 20w50w in all 3 holes on a 09 CVO Springer. I am changing the oil today & installing Mobil 1 Vtwin syn oil in all 3. When I drained the transmission (4000 miles) it appears to show some metallic  residue . Is this normal? I know a lot of guys (different year bikes) are using Redline shock proof but that is 75w?? The manual recommends 20w50w in the 09. Thoughts?   :confused5:

Don't get thrown off by the different rating systems for motor oil versus gear oil.  A 50 wt motor oil is approximately the same viscosity as a 90 wt gear oil.  A 75w90 gear oil is the proper weight for the trans.  If you have the same experience most of us have had, you will find quieter operation and smoother shifting with a real gear oil in the trans, be it Redline Shockproof Heavy or one of the other brands of gear oil.
