Random Quetsion about windshields
« on: December 22, 2010, 09:11:57 AM »

So, I have a supersport detachable windshield that was taken off of the softail custom I used to ride. Here is my question, are there any dimensional differences between this windshield and the one made for the softail custom? The softail part is 57969-97A and the springer windshield was 57965-97A. Trying to save a few dollars if it is the brackets are in the exact same place and no longer have the softail custom.

Love to help if I can, but I can't tell which side you have going on which bike.

Are you putting the old windshield on a springer?  Or putting the springer windshield on another bike?

Either way, all I can do is offer some measurements from mine, but this will probably only be usefull to you if your going to be putting the windshield on a springer, so going out now to measure the mount points (brb):

So what I got was 8" across and 3.5" up and down between the two mount points based on dead center on each mount peg.

I'm assuming though that your shield is quick release.  I don't know the part # of the mount that's on my springer as it was installed prior to my purchasing the bike.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Only other thing I could think of to help was to take a picture of the shield and give you some of the measurements.

It's 13" from bottom to the top of the metal strip, and 9" from the bottom to the top of the cutout for the headlamp.

Sorry if the picture isn't so good.  Just took em with my phone, didn't feel like digging around for a real camera.

Thought of a few other measurements that would be helpful as well given what your trying to do.

The shield measured across the bottom from left to right with a straight line tape measure (e.g. not following the curve of the shield) came out to 18.25".

The length of the base on either side of the hole cutout for the headlamp measures 5.5".

The amount of material that sticks out from the mount pegs is 5".

If I can, will doctor up the photo and attach.  Wow, that wasn't as hard to do as I thought.

As an engineer I am impresses. ha ha!! Thanks!

I saw that it says "custom color" for your springer color. Did you have painted after you bought it or what?

I got the springer slightly used.  Original owner had it custom painted, installed a few upgrades, rode it 9 times taking the mileage up to 2008.  Then turned it in for a dresser.  His Wife didn't like how it rode for her.

I got it for a pretty decent price and threw in a few accessories like the swing arm bag and the Thundermax.

You can find more detailed pics in my welcome message (link below) if your interested.  Hope your windshield fits.  Let me know if you need any additional measurements off the bike itself.  Good luck!  :)

One final measurement:

The width of the cutout for the headlamp measures 7 and 7/8"

The discrepancy between the 18.5" and the other the widths I'm sure comes from the fact that the 5.5" measurement was taken along the curve.
