Title: 2012 FLHXSE Best Resale Color
Post by: CowboyBagger on April 17, 2012, 09:53:46 PM
I'm getting ready to buy a new FLHXSE tomorrow.  Each color is in my trade area.  I want to buy the color that will have the best resale value 4 or 5 years from now.  It will be interesting to see what everyone thinks.  Please respond with which color you think will be the most popular in the future.

2. Ruby Red/Typhoon Maroon

3. Hot Citrus/Antique Gun Stock

Wow, Getting ready to buy a new CVO and already thinking about selling it, thats like remodeling your house to what might sell better even though you have to live with it and dont like it. I assume you are getting a SESG because you want one not because what you think what someone will want in a few years just my opinon. What makes you walk by your ride and say WOW is why I would buy one because what ever you buy you will not get back what you paid for it, so get what you want, ride it, enjoy looking at it and when the time comes, let it go and move on.

If I wanted the information that was in the last post, I would have asked for it.  In my opinion, I like all of the colors that HD has come out with on the 2012 FLHXSE, that's why I asked this question.  This is a poll that I thought would be interesting, not a discussion on my buying motives.

If you don't want honest opinions, avoid asking questions.

There is no way anyone can predict for you what color, if any, will be more likely to have a higher resale value five years from now.  If you look at the various used bike pricing guides for the older CVO's, you will notice that they don't even break them out by color when listing trade in values and average retail values.  So your guess is just as good as anyone else's.

I have a question for you.  If the consensus was the Hot Citrus and you really didn't like the Hot Citrus as well as the other two colors, would you really buy it just because some people you don't even know told you it might be worth a few more bucks five years from now?  Seriously?  So if Willy G had decided to make one of the choices a flat black monotone with ugly skulls embedded in the paint, and all of us on the site told you that was the one to buy, you would do it?

Hey Jerry,  I value all opinions, that's the whole point of this discussion.  As I stated earlier, I like all of the color options for the 2012 FLHXSE unlike the Ultra Classic CVO color options that in my opinion all look marginal.  So you can give us "Your Opinion" if you would like on which color you prefer.  How everyone uses the information from this forum is in everyones opinion their own individual business.

As the original post states all three are great looking colors. The Black just blends in with the crowd a little to much for me. Black and Red are always stable colors, not color of the month per say like the Hot Citrus. I think Red is a really good way to go, looks awesome, has some flash and will stay in style years to come.
But what do I know I bought the Hot Citrus because I like a lot of flash. :2vrolijk_21:

I thought it was called Ruby Red and Typhoon Maroon.  Big difference!

"Resale Red" applies only to non-maroon and non-ruby reds.  Everyone knows that.  Sheesh!  They're not even as fast as the non CVO reds!

I assume you are getting a SESG because you want one not because what you think what someone will want in a few years just my opinion.

Answer:  I buy John Deere tractors (Only one color option "GREEN") because they have the best resale value due to the fact that they are the best engineered.  I have 8 tractors that I trade every 5 years and John Deere will have historically a $30,000 per tractor better resale value than their competition.  I have 7 Peterbilt trucks that are very well engineered and hold their resale value better than the competition.  The best resale colors are: Red, Black and White in that order.  I have 4 Chevrolet Duramax 3500 pickups that hold their resale and those best colors are Red and Black.  I buy Harley Davidson motorcycles because they are cool and they definitely hold their resale value better than the competition.  I can't say they are better engineered but they are definitely better marketed.  When you trade iron as much as I do, resale value is definitely a factor to consider.  I know that the auto market has certain colors (Red) that hold their value better than other colors.  I assumed the motorcycle industry would be similar.  That was the whole point of the post.  Heck, I would love a pink truck if it was worth $10,000 more after 5 years than a red one.

Answer :  If some people told me that: No  If 5000 people relayed that opinion:  Hell Yes, because I know it would be worth A LOT more in 5 years than the other colors or styles.

Sounds to me like you've already answered your question, based on personal experience.  Red seems to come to the top of your list (except for JD tractors, which you can get in any color you want, as long as it's green), so based on your own observations, you should go with red, whether you like it or not.   I've never bought a vehicle of any kind with resale in mind, and I replace every two to three years.  I buy what strikes me at the time I bought it.  That's why I bought the Hot Citrus, it struck me, and still does, way over the two other colors.  Harley will always have a version of red and black, it's the "one-offs" that I like.  It may date it, but who cares.  I love it and that's all that matters.

MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY, !

I didn't buy my Hot Citrus for any reason other than it simply moved my SOUL... and that was only in pictures. I had already committed to buy it before I ever laid eyes on it. THAT'S why you buy a CVO. I waited a LONG time to buy a CVO  because I needed to have it really GRAB me, and no previous incarnation ever had - not the point of dropping 320+ Benjamins on one.

To the OP - the very thought of buying a CVO in a particular color just because you think that color will be worth more down the road defeats the whole purpose of buying a CVO in the first place. If your primary buying criteria is that, you'd be FAR better off buying used, and let someone else take the first two year of depreciation. You pay a LOT for CVOs - a ridiculous amount more than the non-CVO bikes - so if you're looking for the best financial value in terms in dollars invested vs. dollars recouped at resale or trade-in (and BTW the alternate uses of the extra funds it takes to buy a CVO, such as just buying stocks or bonds with those extra funds and getting the gains on them over your stated 5-year period instead of committing them to a CVO) - that calculation would produce far better results with a non-CVO bike than it would with any CVO. You'd probably do even better with a friggin' Gold Wing or BMW in that calculation.

The whole point of the CVOs is to have a sexy bike that really floats your boat. Although CVOs do hold their value quite well - they really aren't about resale value. They are about FLASH and STYLE, man! FLASH, FLASH, FLASH... in that descending order.

Oh yeah... and egos...  :2vrolijk_21:

I don't know about motorcycles but cars in Red or Black sell better than Orange. BUT that's talking cars.

I think motorcycle colors get a much different reaction. I bought a White Deuce in 2003 (Only 10% of the total production of all HD bikes were White in 2003) thinking it was subdude but it really stood out and I got quite a bit of reaction from that color. In 2011 I bought a Brown CVO Street Glide (Only 4% of the total production of CVO HD bikes were Autumn Haze/Antique Gunstock in 2011), again thinking the subdude. Go figure, comments galore.

Each color will have its buying public. Like I said Black and Red should have a larger buying audience but the Orange CVO buyers will be specific shoppers and potentially willing to spend more money for that color. Who really knows.

Any way you go you will be happy and the resale "value" difference should be minimal.

Let us know what color you picked.

I don't think that the color will make any difference in the price of the bike 5 years from now. It may make a difference in the time it is for sale as the blk or the red may sell quicker.  Although I really like all three color combos. I chose the black as I thought I might grow tired of the other two after a few years. Black is timeless.

Perhaps should combine the color schemes to broaden the potential resale market and, thereby, increase the target audience and improve the resale speed.  Front fender in red, tank in citrus, rear fender in black and fairing in John Deere green.  That should cover everyone potential buyer.

Someone needs to bookmark this thread and bring it back in 4 or 5 years.  It will be just as weird then as it is now.  All you're getting here is guys saying that the color they already own (and that their emotions drove the decision on, which is the way most of us approach our toy buying) is going to be worth the most.  Surprise! ::)

Any difference will be insignificant.  Resale value is based more on condition, miles, market conditions, etc. than color, IMO.  So, go crazy and pick the one that appeals to you for once. :2vrolijk_21:

This post makes sense to me. Harley sells a lot of black so there must be a core of black loving Harley enthusiasts. Either of the other colors are better to me. I hate the boring black one.

If you want great resale value don't ride the bike much at all, keep it covered and waxed. Control humidity in the storage area and keep out all bugs. You know these things already but I have to echo some of the questions of the other members about resale being such high priority. And for God sakes don't spend any money on pipes or other add ons because you will never get that money back.

Any of the stock color schemes should be worth the same.  Custom paint jobs, depending on what was done, may actually hurt the price.  Maybe check prices on one of the used motorcycle web sites and see if the price varies much by color.

Interesting conversation.  I'd like to see them bring back the Candy Cherry and Black Ice in a different paint scheme.  I get loads of complements on how it looks and I love red.  I love pink too, but must be accompanied by a member of the female persuasion... 8)

Good luck picking...as suggested before; go for what you like.  It's very likely there will be many others out there who like it too.

I'm getting ready to buy a new FLHXSE tomorrow.  Each color is in my trade area.  I want to buy the color that will have the best resale value 4 or 5 years from now.  It will be interesting to see what everyone thinks.  Please respond with which color you think will be the most popular in the future.

Colours are a decision maker for most of us, however what ever colour we choose grows on us in time.
'All comes down to personal preference'.

When I ordered my CVO in 2011 I had 2 favorites, Kryptonite and Inferno.
Seeing all 3 bikes in the flesh made the decision challenging. (Black, Kryptonite or Inferno!!!).

So I decided to take the plunge and ordered a Krypto and Inferno, decided on the Inferno at the end as the Krypto was wearing off (personal preferences).
When the bike turned up the wrong colour was delivered to the dealer so I declined and stuck with the Inferno but non available any more.
I had the chance to get a Black or Krypto but decided to wait a little longer for the 2012 SG.

Back to square one looking at the new 2012 models I ordered site unseen, this colour jumped at me and had its own character.
Having a few other Red bikes made it easy to decide as I wanted a different colour for a change.
Looking at many posts and some out standing pictures made it clear that what I decided on was right for me.

(After ordering the 2012 Citrus I come across an Inferno in my travels, this bike was delivered to the wrong dealer and was ment to be mine, looking over the bike I was asked to make an offer and told the dealer it was tempting but no thanks I have a Citrus on the way).

No matter what you choose it will be the right one, go with what jumps at you and enjoy.

FWIW: After owning 26 new Harley's over my riding career,  I think like you do.  I want my bike to be enjoyable and have the WOW Factor too but it is important that it has an optimum residual value when I am ready to buy another one.

If color weren't important we would still have lime green and orange Ford Pinto's selling at premium prices and we would still be riding around in our plaid shorts and madras shirts.    :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:

A couple of weeks ago the GM at the Harley store I deal with delivered my Streetglide(Red)and my wife's Streetglide(Citrus) after getting them service and stayed and talked for a couple hours.  During our conversation in front of my wife I asked what was the most ask for color in the 12 SESG and he said the Citrus by along way. :(  So I would think in 5 years it would still be the same.  This Harley store is in the top 5 sales in the nation so they are getting a lot of request for bikes.  I'm a red man myself.  Hope that might be the type info you are looking for.

I love the black.  The contrast of the flames looks great.  I know they could get 5 of the other 2 colors but I got the last black one in stock in the northwest when I bought.  Thank goodness for dealer trades!

Citrus, but it is all about how you take care of the bike in the end,on how much you will get for it.These bikes are taking a nose dive due to the Numbers they are producing. So your going to lose your ass any way so get the color you like,so if it doesn't sell you will be happy with it.

I don't think that the color will make any difference in the price of the bike 5 years from now. It may make a difference in the time it is for sale as the blk or the red may sell quicker.  Although I really like all three color combos. I chose the black as I thought I might grow tired of the other two after a few years. Black is timeless.

JMHO

X2.  Even if there is a resale difference, what could it be...$500 or less?  I think people buying used motorcycles are more concerned with condition and # of miles.  I know that's what I'd look for (unless the color is hideous).

The first one we saw was Black, a sexy beast for sure. Then When I showed her the red one, she said "I want that one". That is how you pick.

I always thought all three colors that year were awesome.  I decided on the red one and have never regretted the decision.

I agree I have the Black Diamond and one of my friends 1st bought the Hot Citrus which I thought was awesome but whe i told him I was getting the Black diamond he found one in TN and traded his Hot Citrus for one.  He only had 500 miles on it He paid 3K over suggested retail and then another 2200 when he traded fro
black!!!  Dont think I would have done that but to each his own!!
Five years from now;

1. Black Diamond/Dark Slate.

2. Ruby Red/Typhoon Maroon

3. Hot Citrus/Antique Gun Stock

Hey Cowboy
I cant seem to go anywhere on my orange / black 2011 CVO without someone trying to buy it off me. I originally lusted after a Kryptonite Green 11 but couldn't get one here in Oz. I think they did me a favour - so If my 2 cents is worth anything - there ya go - anyways I hope you find a great ride & enjoy - look forward to some pics.
Cheers
Glen

This thread was started 2 yrs ago before I bought my Ruby Red/Typhoon Maroon.  I really like this bike, in fact I really like all three 2012 SG colors and the 2011 Krypto.

My bucket list has a bike tour down under someday.  Like John Wayne said, "There's nothing better than riding a good horse through new country"

If we could step back in time just one year...

I'm wondering if all you knowledgeable people with SG's could let me know what the right price is to pay for a 2011 SESG in Black Diamond/Inferno Orange is with only 5,500 miles on the dial?

A friend of mine is looking at one and the dealer is asking $31,700 but I thought that was about $3k high???

I don't own a SG and therefore am not all that familiar with the pricing, so I thought I would ask the ones who might be able to guide me in advising my friend.

A year ago N.G.H. sold a really nice 2010 on here for if my memory is right somewhere around 26.5K.  From what I've read, the 2011's are holding there value pretty good (since they haven't made and more since 12).  I would say that your 3K less is pretty accurate.  That would put the bike in the upper 20's which will soon be a 4 yr. old bike.  If it's a Krypto, add a little.

As you can see in my avatar we have a red and orange one.  I had ordered the orange one but got tired of waiting on it to come in so I got the red SG when it came in.  The wife rode mine one Sunday afternoon and had me text the GM of the Harley dealership that night to see when they might have a orange one coming in.  He texted me right back and said the orange one I had ordered was coming in the next day and he did not have a deposit it. She laid claim to it right then.  That was a costly ride for me :)

I sold my 2010 Tequila Sunrise SESG about a year ago for $27,000. I still wish I hadn't, but it was becoming a bit of a sore spot having two of these expensive bikes!

It's a year later now, and the '14 Rushmore bikes seem to have brought used bagger prices down some. The SESGs are kinda special though, since they were only made in '10, '11, and '12. Whether '15 will see another SESG is anyone's guess. I personally hope not, since I don't want any more of them running around!

The '11s came with the iPod and the speakers in lowers, which the '10s did not have. I think that somewhere in the $28,000 to $29,000 range for a stock '11 SESG is reasonable. Even if it's had engine work, etc. it wouldn't really add all that much to the resale value, as mods generally give only 15% uplift and sometimes not even that, and some buyers are skittish about modded engines.

I checked KBB just now, and it says $29,205 retail for an FLHXSE2 here in Atlanta from a dealer, but prices vary across the country.

I was traveling in Albuquerque and saw a used '12 Hot Citrus at the stealership there. It had 100,000 miles on it. I couldn't believe it. And I do believe the stealership was still wanting over 20k for it,maybe it was even 25k! It had the color matched full luggage deal, but some wear and tear on the paint, looked like a big ol scratch or two on the tank.

That's not as bad a deal as it might seem normally.  After all, it must be on its third or fourth engine so it's low miles :huepfenlol2: !

I wonder if that SESG was Rex Legalley's (legalley) on here. Maybe he traded it. He rides cross-country nearly nonstop, and he lives out that way. Haven't talked with him in awhile, but he's the only guy I know who rides enough to have put that many miles on a '12 SESG in that timeframe.

Does it have a GIANT GAS TANK bolted on the back? His did... But he probably took it off... LOL!

If it is his, 99% of those miles are at 80 MPH or above!  :D

Oh that's so cool that we figured out who the Citrus owner was. I wonder what he traded it in for!

I was looking over the beginning of this thread about the 2012 lineup of color choices; it is hilarious to read. Nearly everyone that started with an opinion (or shall I more strongly say a PASSION) for our rides, still feels exactly the same.

I especially identify with how Ken feels about Buster, his HB. I can't ever imagine giving up Scarlett for any reason. I'm finally getting her to where I feel almost complete in what I want to do, LOL, but not quite yet!!!!
