I am so jealous of that view.  Wonder how hard it would be to ship a bike to Europe for the ride of a lifetime?
Not necessary to ship your bike. The Harley dealer in Frankfurt/Germany is part of the HOG Fly&Ride network. All bikes there are Ultras. If you need suggestions for any routes just let me know.

As Louis said it is easy to hire a Bike in Europe and go and do what you want.

As for European Mountain Roads v USA Mountain Roads, I have found from experience that the Alpine Passes in Europe tend to be more severe than those in the Rockies. I think this is due to the overall size of the Mountain Ranges as The Rockies are much bigger and consequently it is easier for the road builders to find a good route to build on.

The Stilfserjoch (Stelvio Pass) between Switzerland and Italy (pictured) is a severely steep pass and has 47 extreme hairpins on the Italian side. The bends are shaped more like the closed end of a hairgrip rather than being U shaped and the inside of the bend is usually just a sheer drop off of Tarmac. All in all it keeps your concentration sharp and gives you a huge buzz sitting at the top and looking at the descent you are about to make.

We will be doing The Stelvio again in July this year along with a whole raft of others (Fluela, Sustenpass, Furka, Timmelsjoch, Grosglockner, Grimsellpass,Glaubenbuelenpass, Nufenen, Lukmanier,Oberalppass, Umbrailpass, Karerpass,Sellajoch, Grodnerjoch etc) which will be blast.

We're just hoping for good weather to go with it.

Here's another one of SWMBO at the top of the Stelvio Pass.

Nice picture!

And: On our CVO Tour from Faak last September we did three passes with more than 110 switchbacks ;-).

It's that time of year again.....heat issues, everybody traveling long distances, etc.

Three members have talked to me in the past week or ten days telling me that heat seems to be affecting them this year more than it ever has before (last year was my first time of getting heat sick).  We're all a year older so thought I'd bring this to the top again if you're riding anywhere it's 90F or above for any length of time.

Most of us have done long distance rides, some more than others.  However, some of us are getting a little older now and aren't youngsters anymore.  Thought it would be a good idea to put these pages on exhaustion, heat sickness and recommendations from the Iron Butt Ass. all together in one thread specifically for this purpose.

I'm placing this in the CVO Events forum because these are the functions that will have the most amount of members riding long distances and maybe pushing the envelope a little.

we have one on "dehydration and Heat Stroke"....
http://www.umm.edu/non_trauma/dehyrat.htm

and last, but not least, some recommendations by the Iron Butt Association....
http://www.ironbutt.com/tech/aowprintout.cfm

And a good link for your bike is HOG's road side assistance.........

It's that time of year again and most of us are a year older (some are acting like they're two years older :nervous: ).  A few years ago Terrie experienced heat sickness for her first time and has experienced it several times since then.  A couple years ago I experienced a light weight case of it for my first time, where I just started feeling nauscious and no energy all of a sudden.  I found some of the stated symptoms to be very interesting....agitated, argumentative, denial that you're getting heat sick, etc.  Terrie and I have both experienced these symptoms......but never admitted it until we weren't sick any longer ( cold bath or shower as soon as you get to the hotel or get in the pool and stay in it for twenty minutes, etc.).  Anyway, just thought I'd raise this to the conscious level again for those of us that are getting older and not in denial about that. :2vrolijk_21:

Apparently, HD is not selling the hydration vests anymore.  I am on my 2nd one, they last about 2 seasons for me.  One of the best gear investments I have ever made.  I know there are other sources, guess I have to go shopping  ;)

I just got a mesh jacket you can put the hydration packs in.  Going to try it this year, they say it is cooler than just a T-Shirt.

Thought I'd bring this back up to the top.  I'veheard several complaints about the heat from those at the Santa Fe GTG.  Brought back memories of our return trip from the Mt. Hood GTG where several got heat sick and one ended up in the hospital for the night due to heat sickness.

Triple digit temps forecasted for a week straight here in Calif. and 108F forecasted for Sacramento in a couple of days with lows in the 70s.  Everybody please keep hydrated.....ride at night and sleep during the day....praying that everybody makes it home safe.

It's that time of year where many of us start riding long distances and in high temps.  When I started this thread, I'd never experienced heat sickness however, in the past couple of years I've experienced it more than a couple of times and it's not fun.  I also know that other members of this forum suffer heat sickness.....some more than others.  Click on the links above to learn the symptoms and action that you need to take....it's not always so obvious.

Here's something from this month's safety meeting from the company that I work for:

Heat stress, from exertion or hot environments, places
workers at risk for illnesses such as heat stroke, heat
exhaustion, or heat cramps.
Heat Stroke
A condition that occurs when the body becomes unable to
control its temperature, and can cause death or permanent
disability.
Symptoms
■ High body temperature
■ Confusion
■ Loss of coordination
■ Hot, dry skin or profuse sweating
■ Throbbing headache
■ Seizures, coma
First Aid
■ Request immediate medical assistance.
■ Move the worker to a cool, shaded area.
■ Remove excess clothing and apply cool water to their
body.
Heat Exhaustion
The body’s response to an excessive loss of water and salt, usually
through sweating.
Symptoms
■ Rapid heart beat
■ Heavy sweating
■ Extreme weakness or fatigue
■ Dizziness
■ Nausea, vomiting
■ Irritability
■ Fast, shallow breathing
■ Slightly elevated body temperature
First Aid
■ Rest in a cool area.
■ Drink plenty of water or other cool beverages.
■ Take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath.
Fast Facts
Heat Stress
Protecting Yourself from
Heat Cramps
Affect workers who sweat a lot during strenuous activity.
Sweating depletes the body’s salt and moisture levels.
Symptoms
■ Muscle cramps, pain, or spasms in the abdomen, arms
or legs
First Aid
■ Stop all activity, and sit in a cool place.
■ Drink clear juice or a sports beverage, or drink water
with food.
ӽ Avoid salt tablets.
■ Do not return to strenuous work for a few hours after
the cramps subside.
■ Seek medical attention if you have the following: heart
problems, are on a low-sodium diet, or if the cramps
do not subside within one hour.
Protect Yourself
Avoid heavy exertion, extreme heat, sun exposure, and high
humidity when possible. When these cannot be avoided, take
the following preventative steps:
■ Monitor your physical condition and that of your
coworkers for signs or symptoms of heat illnesses.
■ Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable clothing
such as cotton.
ӽ Avoid non-breathable synthetic clothing.
■ Gradually build up to heavy work.
■ Schedule heavy work during the coolest parts of day.
■ Take more breaks when doing heavier work, and in
high heat and humidity.
ӽ Take breaks in the shade or a cool area.
■ Drink water frequently. Drink enough water that you
never become thirsty.
■ Be aware that protective clothing or personal protective
equipment may increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
