Long Distance Riding................
« on: March 19, 2006, 02:56:41 AM »

Most of us have done long distance rides, some more than others.  However, some of us are getting a little older now and aren't youngsters anymore.  Thought it would be a good idea to put these pages on exhaustion, heat sickness and recommendations from the Iron Butt Ass. all together in one thread specifically for this purpose.

I'm placing this in the CVO Events forum because these are the functions that will have the most amount of members riding long distances and maybe pushing the envelope a little.

  we have one on "dehydration and Heat Stroke"....
http://www.umm.edu/non_trauma/dehyrat.htm

and last, but not least, some recommendations by the Iron Butt Association....
http://www.ironbutt.com/tech/aowprintout.cfm

And a good link for your bike is HOG's road side assistance.........
http://www.road-america.com/ca/hd/hog_app.asp?company_code=520

JCG, I read everything I could on the Iron Butt Association before planning my ride. You want to start many weeks in advance by getting into physical shape. Sit ups and weight lifting to strengthen your upper body are very helpful. Eating less carbs, because carbs make you tired, and drinking water instead of sodas.
Also dont forget to get your bike ready!
My certificate reads;
This is to Certify that in August of 2004, Brian Bracey foed a Harley-Davidson Screamin' Eagle Electra Glide a total of 2036 grueling miles in less than forty-eight hours starting in Sturgis, South Dekota continuing into Danville, Illinois before ending in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina while participating in the SaddleSore 2000.

The SaddleSore 2000, an extreme fide designed for an extreme rider, was conducted under very strict guidelines set forth by the Iron Butt Association. Successful finishers must complete two consecutive Iron Butt Association SaddleSore 1000's to earn this exclusive certificate of completion.

The dumb azz award as my friends call it;
Would I do it again? yes
Was it worth it? only for bragging rights
Is it grueling? Deffinately

Any way my ride was 2036 miles and was completed in 37.5 hours.

Good luck to anyone who completes any of the rides,SaddleSore1000, BunBurner1500, or the SaddleSore2000.
Next one I want to do is the Coaast to Coast in 50 hours, any takers?

Spiderman,

I-10 from the east coast is Jacksonville Fla. To me that is either a good starting or finishing point. The few people I have spoken with that have done this ride said to accomplish everything you want to do on your trip before you start, for when you finish the ride you wont want to do anything for 2 to 3 days after. Hoping to make this ride in october when the weather is more predictable. As for me a west to east ride will probably be better, for I still have another 8 hours ride from Jacksonville to home.

I think my biggest day in the saddle was Bristol TN to Holland MI. Woke up at Dawn after the NASCAR Cup race, packed the dewy tent and hit the road. 12 hrs later and 850 miles (5 tanks of fuel). I was home. It felt so good I did it again the following year.

i think one of the best tips ive had re long distance riding is to get a early start. ride 80-100 miles before you eat breakfast then the rest of the trip is a breeze with all day to go at whatever pace. works for me! [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=banana.gif]
