Title: i have a quick qestion about buying a 09 or a 13 roadglide cvo
Post by: ShameLess on December 21, 2013, 03:49:13 PM
ok my buddy has an 09 with 7000 miles on it, silver titanium with legend airide chopped tourpak, painted lowers s and s cross over with rieinhart mufflers, basically about 15000.00 in extras and it has 3 years lefdt on the warranty for $35,000.00 but I have found an 13 cvo roadglide in atomic orange with a king pak and exteneded warranty for 34000.00 id have to put the lowers on and the air ride  and an aftermarket exhaust. ,my question is which is a better deal? Harley says they are the same motor frame etc. only thing different is the stereo. and the newer 13 has the fairing a little higher, im pulling the trigger on one of these on Monday and have talked myself into and out of each of them for the last 2 weeks, im going out drinking but I will have my phone with me so I can check back on here periodically, whats your advise? thanks fellas

Don't make any hasty decisions while you're drinking  :P

Personally, I'd take the 13 for the less money if you're wanting to spend that much.

The '13 will definitely hold value better and you can pick which add ons as far as exhaust etc. that you want. Also if he has modded the '09 to where it cannot be put back to stock the warranty isn't worth the paper it is written on.The extended warranty companies are always looking for any reason to deny a claim.I would bet he would be hard pressed to get much over 25k trade from a dealer.

Id really like an anniversary edition but no one has them. 40000.00 is my budget. I want a brand new one no one has sat on or rode

IMO, the asking price for the '09 is WAY out of line.  Look up the private party resale value in Kelly Blue Book or NADA.  The lowers and the TP make it worth a bit more, but the suspension and the exhaust do not.  Any additions you do to a bike, can be expected to return about 20 cents on the dollar, particularly exhaust. I would factor in the Legend Suspension at about 1/3-1/2 of retail value.

The '13 is a nice bike....personally, that would be my choice for a number of reasons.  Regardless, one should never pay over MSRP for a new CVO, then add on the TP and lowers, if desired.  If those items are already on the bike, I would again factor those in at MSRP, at most.

But, it's your nickel...

kbb shows the suggested trade in at $19,950 and suggested retail (from a dealer) at $25,020.  the add ons that your 'buddy' has do not bump the value up anywhere near $35,000.  how good of a buddy is it?

on the 2013, $34k is just about msrp.  then of course you've got to factor in what your upgrades are going to cost.  but you get the benefit of it being the upgrades that you choose.  not what someone else did.  the premium hand adjustable shocks ride pretty good, so you may find that you don't have to spend the big bucks on the air suspension.  you can do a nice exhaust upgrade using fullsac stuff for a good price.  the ac is already the high flow, so you would just have to worry about the tune.  i added a chopped tourpak and lowers, so that would run you a little over $2,000.  the 2013 also has the daymaker headlights stock.

to me it seems like you would be buying a used bike for new bike pricing when you could easily get a 5 year newer bike for just a little bit more.

Both of them are overpriced, but the '09 is ridiculously so.  NFW an '09 is worth that kind of money, I don't GAS what's been done to it.

I'd pass on both of them if I were you, but it sounds like it's going to be one or the other.  Good luck with your decision.  Let us know what you decide.

Your second post indicated you want one no one has ridden, so I'm confused.  Obviously the 2009 has been ridden more than a little bit.  Is the 2013 still brand new in a dealer's showroom?

Both bikes are overpriced, and the 2009 is seriously overpriced. Trust me, he would never get anything near that price from a dealer.  Accessories don't add much to the true market value, and exhaust systems don't add anything since almost every Harley out there has a nonstandard exhaust.  If you really want the Legend suspension, buy a new system and put it on whatever bike you decide to buy.  That way it will be warranted by Legend.  Buying someone else's used one leaves you holding the bag if it fails.  As for the ESP, others have already mentioned that isn't necessarily a big selling point these days.  Any mods to the bike can easily allow the ESP folks to deny coverage per the contract, and there are many reports of them doing just that lately.

If it were me and the only choice was the two bikes you mentioned or nothing else, I'd go with the 2013 and do some serious negotiating on the price.  Ask anyone who has recently tried to trade a 2013 Touring model on a 2014 just how much that 2013 has depreciated since the 2014's hit the market.  Some dealers were discounting new 2013's by $5k off MSRP.  I realize there isn't a 2014 Roadglide, but the principle is the same.  And once the 2015 hits the market next spring that 2013 will plummet in value.  MSRP for a 2013 CVO RG was $32,999 btw.

Both are over priced.  They are way crazy on the price for the 09.  31K new in 09, I know, I bought one new.

No way would I pay over MSRP for a USED bike.  Tour pack and lowers are about all that add any resale to a bike.

If the Orange one is USED, I might offer 30K or 31 with the tour pack if I really wanted the bike bad.

The 09, 24K at very most.

Loved my 09 same color but at 45K miles it was time for a new bike.

go for the 110 anniversary CVO - you will NOT be disappointed!  Just doing a quick search I saw one advertised in Texas a MSRP.  Last July I drove 1200 miles each way to pick mine up.

At this point I doubt you will find a "new" '13.. and if so, dont let them know you have $40K to spend.

Get the 2013. You get the daymaker headlights, better audio, better shocks, better resale plus a bunch of minor upgrades to the engine and frame.

How about waiting 8 months until the 2015s come out?  There could be a newly designed RG CVO that would be worth waiting for.
