Title: Traded for Red Pepper
Post by: FLSTFI Dave on December 24, 2018, 08:18:32 AM
I was positive I was not trading this year.  I knew Smoky Mountain Harley was getting only 1 Red Pepper / Magnetic Gray Road Glide, and it had a deposit.  Had just got my gunship where I wanted it.

Went over to SMHD to Smoke a Cigar with a friend, before I went to work the next day.  Right before I lit my cigar at the SHED, he say Dave the deal fell through on the Red Pepper, its up front.  I walked in, took a 30 second look, and walked to sales managers office, and asked him to do the numbers.   So 30 days later I take delivery.

Did a couple big rides the end of the summer.  A 5200 mile trip to Glacier National park and Bearthooth Pass in Aug.  Then the End of Sept road to AZ, NM and Big Bend Area of TX, 5400 mile trip.

Fender and lowers were not on long.  Didn't have any intention of trading.

Yea, it really caught my eye.  Had no intentions of doing a trade this year, then saw it in person.

This is a latter build.  Hopefully it will not sump.  Dealer is very good so I am not two worried.

I added a Klock Weks 14" Sport Flair windshield as we know the stock one sucks.  Also added a Rider backrest and then rode the foothills parkway for some break-in.  Put 179 miles on yesterday.

so if someone were looking for a used road glide, say a 2018, in say, gunship gray color.  and they were to check a dealer, like maybe smhd, what could one expect to find one for sale for?

The bike in the first two pictures of this post.  Gunship Gray Road Glide, with Klock Slicer Front Fender and lowers, 23850 miles.  Should hit the floor in the next day or two.  They also have a used Orange 18 CVO Road Glide on the Floor, and the Gunship Gray Street Glide.

When bars where swapped I had heated grips put on the bars.  Also have 2.25 fullsac baffles on it now and paint matched mid frame deflectors.
Next are a few little things:
Custom Dynamics brake light strobe
Custom Dynamics LED Turnsignals, with the white that flashes yellow,
Yaffe Black licensee plate frame
4 point docking hardware
CB and CB antenne
Garage door opener

Then in a few months maybe a TTS tuner and Fullsac MX head pipe.
Paint matched head light trim.

your lucky.  My dealer said the Red Pepper is sold out and no more will be shipped

I heard that a couple months ago.  This one was a sold unit, where the deal fell through.

Ron and Janet,

Moved up here when I retired from the Navy in 2001, from Jacksonville FL.  Love the riding up here.

Rob

Really only a few changes between the 18 and the 19.  One the oil pump and seal plate is an upgrade so they say.  The air cleaner is now like a heavy breather vice the ventilator on the 18.  The other change is the big one, the new boom GTS infotainment system.   From what little I have used it, I like that a lot more.  It's easier to create routes in ride planner and then upload them to the bike from you phone using the HD app.  Now that I am learning its controls it also is easier to toggle through menus.  The pinch to zoom is very nice also.  The screen is clearer, easier to see, and boot up time is way quicker.

They have a panel of white LEDs that shine downward onto the plate.   Plug and play into the factory harness.

That is a Paul Yaffe Stealth III plate frame, its designed for the CVO bike.  That is the stock seat.

Yes it has LEDs in the top that illuminate the plate.  Works pretty good.  Been running this brand plate frame since 09 in most states.  Never had an issue.

No Drilling required -   I assume the tape is so you do not scratch anything while you set it in place.

Yes. Tape is very important to keep from scratching the fender. Remove the tape while it's loose on the mount. You have to go by feel to get the bolts lined up.    Stuart

The black.      It would be hard to get paint to stay on the chrome.      You might be able to have a chrome one media blasted and primed but it would be cheaper and easier to just use the black one.

No drilling of the Fender.

The bracket behind the fender needs the nuts that are welded to it to be drill a very little.  Basically just remove the threads.  The Yaffe frame uses the factory fender holes, then bolt goes in through the back side of the fender, through the bracket and fender, and threads into the new plate frame.

The tape keeps you from scratching the fender while installing.

Rob:

Did you happen to see that your rear fender or tire is not centered? From the picture it seems to be too far to the right.

I like Yaffe’s tag bracket too but it isn’t the easiest to install if your hands/fingers are large.

Enjoy

It is a pain for installation, and adding the year sticker each year.  That said, the way it cleans the rear makes it worth it.

Rob:

The other thing that I have contemplated is where the best looking place for the yearly sticker would be.

I thought with a little trimming (of the sticker) it could fit above the plate numbers or to the right at the widest point of the frame oval.

Something to ponder while sipping abrew in the garage.    :drink:

For sure. I feel the overall lines on my tag (style) made it harder to line up. I was thinking of filling in the white areas with red on the red side and blue on the blue side.

If you jack up the rear of the frame it will drop the rear wheel to give you a little more room to get your hand up in there for access.

Did a few more little modifications yesterday.  I installed some Vent Screens and the Custom Dynamics Dynamic Ringz, white until you turn then orange.   You do have to take the front of the fairing off to do this, as not enough slack in wire to get factory turn signals unplugged.

Hard to get good pictures with led lights on.  Should give an idea

I think its on my end, a setting when I transfer them to the computer.  They are a larger size.

Took some stuff to the powder coater yesterday.  Items like my hand guards and cup holder where paint was chipping.  Some more vent screens also.

Great looking bike Dave... FYI, on the custom dynamics front signal lights you don’t have to remove the fairing. If you move the existing bulb slightly toward the outside and use a small flat head screw driver you can move the tab enough to disconnect the factory bulbs. You are correct in it is very tight and a little difficult to navigate. The first set I changed I called CD and they told me how to remove the factory bulbs.

I also found it to be a PITA, installed the CD probeam and that was no fun getting them installed with the o ring seal from the OE bulb … but they look/work great, also did the lower WS trim with run/blinker. I need to stop with the lights cause its starting to look like a gold wing going down the road at night  :nixweiss: your bike is looking good tho dave

Ok, that is interesting to know.  I had to take fairing off any way to install vent screens.  I'm just glad its not the total PIA like the 13 and earlier road glides were.

My last two CVO's I did not run Tour packs.  I put a T-Bag route 66 on rear seat.  Works great, however when not traveling the rear seat is removed.  There are always small scratches that have to be polished out.  HD does not make a solo mount rack to carry a larger bag like the T-Bag route 66.

So I chose to modify the HD solo rack.  Had an upright added to the rear.  Had a wider bar added to front so it will not cut straps.  Then had it powder coated.  It will only be on bike when a bag is on the bike.  The bag has a roll top bag that clips on top.  Its also a roller bag.  Ready for Daytona.

My wife will be down in Cape Canaveral for the Women in the Wind winter nationals On 6 March.  I get off the Rig the  7th and will ride down to meet up with her.  We will get to Daytona Sunday the 10th and head home morning of the 13th.

That is very slick Dave, did you have that piece done at a shop that might want to do another?

Thanks Alan.  It's the stock Harley Davidson solo rack.  I just drew up the additions and had a local fab shop do the work.  I am sure he would do another.  I would think it would be less to have work done locally than shipping across country.

CB and CB antenne

Hold on, my dealer is telling a friend of mine who is looking at a CVO RG that the CB module is not compatible.  They even called up the mothership and were told the same thing.  We cannot figure out why this would be the case.  Was there any issue for you to install that CB module?  Seems like it would be exactly the same as if you were installing it on a RG Special.

Nope same hardware mounted the CB module in the Fairing.  Same plug, plugged it in.  And powered up bike and in a few minutes it recognized the module.  When on, even has the CB icon on the display.  I know several other running the module on 2019 CVO bikes.  Doesn't the CVO limited come with it?  Same head unit as the other CVO bikes.  Most dealers are clueless

Spent yesterday afternoon changing out the heat-shields on the Red Pepper.  I installed all Black Chrome like on the Mako Shark Road Glide or the Gunship gray I had.  Took a bit but got in all aligned correct.  I am happy with the look.

Very nice Dave! I've thought of doing the same with mine, if I could find some take offs. I like the look.

I had priced them out from Harley and its over 1150.00.

I looked hard for take offs for a few months, then gave up.  Well two weeks ago I was on Facebook and some one was looking for the ones that came on my bike.  A couple posts later a guy posts he has some black chrome for sale.  So I messaged him, and asked if it was everything from head pipe, mufflers and end caps and he said yes.  Then he told me he would let them go for 200 dollars, so I jumped on it.  He even paid shipping.

I also believe the Black Chrome should have been on from the factory.

MX head pipe works great.  Had it on my 18 with the TTS tuner.  Really helped the low torque.

Terry,  didn't realize it was still unsold.

Extremely disappointed in the Quality of the 19 Red Pepper.  My 7th CVO since 2009.

The bike now has 13,300 miles on it.
The front fork legs look like they have been sand blasted,  Chips everywhere.  Looks horrible.
This bike has more paint chips than my last four bikes did added together, and its not been on gravel like two of my past bikes.
The seat looks like it has over 50K miles on it,  it is wearing badly.  My last two CVO showed no wear at all on the seat with 24K miles.
Paint coming off the shifter leavers.

Going to talk to dealer about all this, hoping Harley will cover fork legs, seat and shift levers.  I am 99% sure they will do nothing about the crappy paint that chips if you look at it.

I have not had engine issues yet with the 19.  Engines seem about the same.

Fork legs in better condition on the 18 with 24500 miles on it than the 19.
Seat in much better condition on the 18
Paint never had a chip on the 18.

Dave, sorry to hear about all of the issues with the Red Pepper. I’m only at about 5,100 miles on my Mako and when I was washing it the other day I noticed several chips on the lower legs. Nothing on the paint and I’m not using the stock seat. I replaced the front end on my ‘17 CVO Limited with HDs black front end. Rode it twice the miles and never a chip or a scratch. Not sure what changed for ‘19 but it does seem that the lower legs are not holding up.
Let us know if the dealer helps out at all.

Well I guess I found my first “issues”. I am wanting to do something this winter with the headpipe and a tuner, possibly a cam. I normally do my own service work but so far I’ve had the local dealer do the 1,000 and now the 5,000. The reason is I wanted to have anything tha might come up documented. While both my ‘17 and ‘18 had zero issues for some reason I just haven’t felt as comfortable about the ‘19. They had to replace the right hand control module and the voltage regulator within the first few hundred miles.
I stopped by yesterday to see when my bike would be ready to pick up from the 5k service. The answer was tomorrow. They let me know there was fluid transfer and they installed the vent kit and the left front rotor was way out of spec and they had ordered a replacement that had just shown up yesterday. I’ll find out the amount of transfer when I pick it up. Funny thing is the trans fluid level didn’t seem to change when I checked it several times between the 1k and 5k service. The rotor measured almost twice the acceptable amount, I think he said .15. Good news he said no evidence of sumping. I had ask them to check for sumping, transfer and the front rotors.
Now it’s time to put some miles and smiles on it...

That's true - it's mainly due to paints having to be water based, these days, and the search for ever shorter drying times.  Last two BMW cars and one Ford I've had have been terrible for chips and flaws, as well as the normal Ford orange peel effect.  As drying times shorten, the paint doesn't have time to flow before it starts to dry.  Harley paint has been better to me than cars though.

Holy cow Batman, those are insane markups.  I just purchased my silver/charred steel for $39k before taxes.  I am super happy with that price and would have never paid $5k over sticker.  I also had an offer on a Red Pepper for $39k.  So, the deals are out there.

Now I hate the stock seat.  Really sucks on a long ride. Not comfortable at all.   I just ordered the ciro seat that Adam Sandoval is promoting. He has to know to know something about comfort.  He rides way more than I do. Has a long lead time. Oh well.  Hope your issues get resolved.  Stuart. 😕
I will be interested in what you think of that seat.

My dealer is going to go to bat for me on the fork legs and the seat.

I’ve got $500 deposit down on a Red Pepper here in Milwaukee, but they have to ship it from a different dealer in their family of dealers. Checking it out on Monday.

If I like the bike I may be buying. Have them down to $39,000, but hoping they will come down a bit more. I doubt it though.

I would try for $37,000.  In three weeks the 2020s will make the 2019 worth 15% less

Fork legs were replaced.
Seat was replaced
Shift levers were replaced
Front brake rotors were replaced for the second time.

Dealer really went to bat for me and got Harley to cover it.

The next project has started on my Red Pepper.  Tear down of motor starts at 22804 miles.  We started at 1240 on Sunday.  We got the whole top end torn down, we also test fit the new 130 S&S cylinders and the Mahle flat top pistons and will be able to get zero deck height with a 0.014 base gasket.  Lifter are out, one piston oiler was removed and installed with a new gasket.  We ended at 5:00 Sunday afternoon.  Will resume today

Finished putting the bike together and all the little parts.  Also got two more heart cycles done.  Once totally cooled the last time, to it out for a short ride to seat the rings.  Bike feels strong, but you can tell it needs a tune, a bit rich under 3000 rpm.  Rode it home and now have 62 miles on it.  Have an appointment for Tuesday to have it tuned.  Will have a few more miles on by then.  Sounds good and feels good.

Thanks.  The air cleaner seems to offer a little more leg room than the stock one.  Stock one I really wanted to keep but it just does not flow enough air, it barley flows enough air for the stock motor.

I was able to get out and ride 195 miles yesterday.  Mostly in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains.  This bike is very well mannered and very easy to ride.  It is very smooth, which lets you forget how much power it does have.  It does very well in hilly twisty roads, but put it on a straight a way and roll on power at 75mph is incredible.  6th gear about 65 there would not be a need to down shift to pass a few cars or trucks.

So far very happy with how it turned out and rides.  Hope to get more miles on her in the next few days to check all riding conditions and situations.

Put another 130 miles on her yesterday.  The more I ride it the more I like it.  Roll on power is what I like best.  Can not just give it wide open in first or second.

I have just over 1K miles on the bike since building the motor.  Did the first oil change yesterday with 900 miles on the build.  Oil was very clean, nothing was on the drain plug at all.  I was very pleased about this.

This bike is easier to ride than stock.  Throttle response is very smooth, no surges or such.  First four gears it pulls fine from any RPM.  The other day was in 4th for quite a while on a twisty hill road, could easily pull out of a curve at 2000 rpm, and then up to 2700 rpm before next cover.  Also cruise fine at 65 mph in 6th.  There really is power everywhere.  5th and 6th do better if kept above 2400 rpm.  If you grab a hand full of throttle above 3K you better be hanging on, it pulls very hard, very quick.

3/4 throttle in 1 or 2nd will fry the tire.

Have only check the mpg on the last tank.  It was okay, 38.2 mpg.  That said I had a good 30 miles of riding very hard trying to keep up with sport bikes going across the mountain on hwy 68 out of Tellico to Ducktown.  That said I think at a steady interstate cruise I will be able to see 43 mpg or so, and similar on group rides.

Very happy with the bike

Well it's been 3.5 months since I finished the Motor on this bike.  It has just over 10,000 miles on the motor build.  The build has been trouble free.

I have taken a trip to Eureka Springs AR on it, 700 miles one way, half the trip was interstate at 80 mph, bike performed flawless.  Half was two lane back roads, bike was flawless again.

I have done a Blue Ridge Parkway ride with the bike and a large group of bikes, over 20.  Again the bike ran and acted well, no issues.

I have rode in the rain, no issues if your careful with your right hand.  Its been ridden on 90 degree plus days, and gets a bit warm on your right thigh.

You do have to ride smart and be careful with this power, its way easy to spin the back tire.  This power has never caused a problem for me.

That said if you love doing burnouts, this bike will do them for sure, but you would easily break belts or other parts.  Wide open shifts to 3rd gear could take out 3rd gear, I've talked to others who have done it with less power.  I am not doing burnouts, nor running on a track.  I do not do low gear full power shifts, but I do ride it hard and use the power.

I am really enjoying this build, and the amount of fun it is to ride.
