Title: 06 FLHTCUSE Stutters and Coughs
Post by: CaribooLou on May 13, 2017, 04:11:06 PM
My new to me 2006 CVO Ultra will cough and sputter when I roll on a little throttle after coasting with the clutch in. I notice it most during low speed sharp turns when I am slipping the clutch in first gear. It doesnt back fire, but it sounds like a cough from the intake, bike has yet to completely shut off, but came close today.

Bike is stock with 61k, had cam tensioners replaced just before I bought it.

Problem is much worse when the bike is cold.

Any ideas at what to look for before I take it back to the dealer?

Any codes coming up? My 07 acted the same, changed the plugs fixed  coughing.

Do you know if the bike is still totally stock?  If it is, perhaps it was never tuned and you have the standard lean condition just off idle.  I'd have them do some diagnostics first to make sure the ignition and plugs are good and you have no vacuum leaks, etc., but if everything checks out you might need a tune.  All too common back in those days.

No codes, I'll check the plugs, lean condition just off idle sounds like the best way to describe it. As far as I can tell the bike is stock, original air cleaner and pipes. The air filter isn't in the best shape, but I don't think that could be causing it.

Have you checked for intake or exhaust leaks?

It is going back to the dealer tomorrow morning, there is no warranty but I'm expecting them to make it right. I have only had it for a month and it has done this since day one. The problem has been getting worse, it stalled at a stop sign two days ago and took 6-7 seconds of cranking to get going again. This morning it sputtered rolling back on the throttle after making a right at a green light in second gear.

Fuel filter?

Fuel filter?

Very good possibility.  If the dealership is competent, a fuel pressure check should be one of the first things on the list.

Dealer said is was an intake leak. Going to pick it up after work today. They fixed it on their dime, even though they weren't obligated to. If anyone needs anything in the DC area be sure to check out Patriot Harley in Fairfax VA.

Glad you found it. Intake and exhaust leaks are easy to overlook, but simple to diagnose.

Did they sell you that bike telling you all the service was up to date??  Unless you went off-roading they should have never let that bike out the door with a filter looking like that!!  I hope you got a great deal.
But you seem happy and that is what matters!!!
I EFFIN love my 2006 Ultra CVO it still makes my heart tingle if you know what i mean.

I will second that. The air filter certainly needs cleaning.

Well after taking it back to the dealer 3 times for the same problem, I told them to pound sand and took it too an independent shop. I had them check over everything the dealer had touched and look over the bike to see if anything else was wrong. Running problem was coming from a dirty IAC valve, runs great now. Also had to put a front motor mount in.
