Smoked LEDs for painted spoilers?
« on: March 13, 2010, 12:22:57 PM »

Hello.  I've got the painted spoilers on my chopped tour-pak and bag lids for my 2009 SERG. Read a thread here from about a year ago that someone was looking for smoked lenses for the spoilers (not the air wing luggage rack). I would like the same to match the smoked lenses on the LED tail lights.  Harley doesn't offer best I can tell.  Sent a note to Harley and asked the question but no response.  Has anyone found smoked LED lights for the painted spoilers?  That red cover just doesn't match.  Any other options?  Thanks in advance.

I ordered the spoilers for the chopped tour pack and the saddlebags but didn't think about the smoke vs red lenses... I'll follow this to see what is suggested.

Mine are supposed to be in by the end of the month so I'll wait before I mount them if they aren't going to look right. If you get a chance please post a picture.

Thanks.

Battery is dead in camera.  Charging now.  Will take some pics and post for you.  Doesn't look bad but sure would look alot better if they were smoke verses red.

He is right it works or if you are a painter you can mix a little black with clear and do the same thing.

Will pick some up and do a little testing with another lens cover.  Thanks for the tip :-)  I'll post how it works.

Picked some of the VHT paint up at the auto parts store.  Also purchased one small LED light and tested the paint on the red lens.  Got it much too dark with three coats on the test light.  Took the LEDs off my bike and painted them with two light coats.  Look good but it did make it a little harder to see the LEDs.  You can still see them in daylight, especially the tour-pak light.  The bag lights are a little darker.  Probably because there are much fewer LEDs in them.  Nighttime they can be seen.  The black tint helped in my opinion.  Thanks for the suggestions. Pic below is in daylight with lights off.

that always bothered me also :nixweiss: they make a smoke lens for the airwing light. i thought about window tint film for this but haven't tried it.

The VHT Nightshades mentioned above in this thread worked well.  Just don't put it on thick.  Its a translucent black for spraying on auto lights.  The kids use it on their vehicle taillights apparently.  With the LED lights under the spoiler, they are already shaded so it doesn't take much to darken them up.

They look so much better! Good job, as soon as mine come in I'll paint them before mounting.

Thanks!
