Title: Cutting Handlebars
Post by: bigchuck on March 20, 2019, 02:19:44 PM
Can anyone tell me if I have to cut left end of  LA Chopper Twin Peak handlebars when using original heated grips? If so, how much? And what did you use to cut it? I called the manufacturer and they said that their bars are ready for heated grips with no cutting. I just want to make sure and don't want to have to do this twice. Thanks

I can help with the cutting...go to a home improvement store and get yourself a small handheld pipe cutter (like pictured).  They are only a few bucks and will allow you to be very precise.  It will take a few minutes to cut as you have to spin it around the bars and tighten the blade as it cuts.

+1 better tool than a hacksaw.  Finish up deburring with a fine file.

Thanks for the cutting tip. I was thinking of using a metal chop saw but with the step between grip area and bar it would be hard to get a good square cut. Now if someone can tell me if it is even necessary.

Just curious why you would think it may be necessary...

Sent from my boring Droid phone.

I have read in many places that the left heated grip does not slide on far enough and without cutting you will have a space between clutch perch and the step from one inch to one and a half inch.

Easy measurement.

Just put Wild 1 10" on and I had to cut 3/8 to 1/2 inch off left bar. I did it with a hacksaw and cleaned it with a Dremel tool.

Wow. I put a set of those in 12" on my '11 sergu and they were perfect. Makes me wonder if it's a batwing issue.

It's strictly a bar issue - at least on the Wild Ones.  Their bars for the RG may be a bit different than those for a batwing.  Don't know.  I too had to cut a bit since the left heated grip does not slide quite as far up the bar and does and leaves a small gap otherwise.  I also used the tubing cutter.  Makes a nice even cut with very little clean up necessary.  Much better than a hack saw or chop saw imo.

It's a heated grip issue. The left hand heated grip does not go on as far as the right hand side because the heat adjustment mechanism is in the left grip. They don't make bars for heated and non-heated so typically the left side has to be cut. 3/8" is the typical number but I'm sure varies as all manufacturers are not created equal.

Update: Contrary to what LA Choppers told me on the phone it is necessary to cut 1/2" off of left end of Twin Peak bars.

I have installed Wild One WO578’s and two different pair of Yaffe Monkey Bars. I had to cut between 1/8 inch to 3/8 inch off the left clutch side with heated grips to get a flush fit where the switch housing meets the step of at the bar.

I always just used a Dremel Tool to make the cuts and then to sand and smooth it up.

On the last set of Yaffe’s I had to cut off about 1/8 inch on the throttle side also.
