weather channel

I wanted to add this to the AVC thread but resisted. When I flip through from radio to CD I hit the very loud static from no reception on the weather channels. No problem with volume level there, it is much louder than the FatCats. Now maybe I did this to myself by altering the antennas, but I never get reception there. I end up in the middle of a curve at a fair speed adjusting time and space to find the best vector through for maximum launch and my thumb triggers the radio switch and I go from SRV to

It sure is loud, and "surprising" when you hit it accidently  [smiley=oops.gif]

It is a stupid feature, who needs a "weather guessers" channel any way  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Boating in the northeast we typically call them the "liars" or the weather guessers". Either way, they haven't a clue, and won't until they put windows in that tiny little forecast room.

As much as I don't care for the "liars", I am thinking about changing up my trusty Garmin 276 GPS for the new 476 version. This unit is the same frame as mine as uses all the same accessories ( of which I have a few). But it also include XM Weather, which gives you real time local NEXRAD radar (and XM radio if you wish).

The picture below is not real good, but it shows heavy and light rain moving across the screen. The NEXRAD is the one "weather" window I always check before leaving the house.

Want to make sure everyone knows that none of the NEXRAD radar feeds are real-time. This type of data are considered near real-time (5 to 7 minute updates depending on the mode the radar is in). A lot can change in five minutes, so please take that into account when viewing these radar products.

Good point John!  It is a tool that must be used with common sense.

It still can be useful...when we were in Cripple Creek, we went to the Colorado Springs HD after Pikes Peak...the weather was threatening just to our north...we parked under a tent at the dealer due to the possibility of hail...we went to lunch (dealer shuttle)...nothing really happened.  The brunt of the storm stayed to our north.  If we had the radar, we could have seen the direction of travel and returned to Cripple Creek sooner.

had a good time at lunch with Iselbulls and crawdaddy so all was not lost!!!

/Bill

Guys,

I don't want to start in on a hijacking story about this thread, and I really do enjoy the bits about Garmin, NEXRAD and XM,

The original post refers to the radio weather channel; I believe it is really talking about NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) which should be available in most areas on the east coast. Could it be that the radio is not tuned to the correct band for the area?

Here is a link to the stations and coverage areas for NWR:

the weather band is a useless function on the bikes.

When it is raining the liars will tell you is is clear and pleasant, and when nice they will predict miserable weather. Either way, it is just about always 8-10 hours behind what you just drove through.

About the only thing they get right is "significant meteorological events".

Aye, I've been hailed on and blown over in those!

Hmmm, maybe 30 bucks a month don't seem so bad after all?

Nah, screw it.  Still too much  :-/ .

Always be on the WB that has information being passes in a listenable manner...in other words...change the channel when you start to ride to one without static...
