200 Tire
« on: February 04, 2010, 05:06:56 PM »

Just installed a Metzeler 200/50-18 rear and it fits like a glove. No mod what so ever and it fills up the fender very nice.  :2vrolijk_21:

Since I asked on another thread about putting a 200 tire on the SERG and we now have pics, how well does it fit.  What I mean by that is that the tire should be on a 6' rim and it is on a 5".  Does it look too narrow at the bead or is it okay?  How about a closeup.  I want to order new Avons for later this summer and want to order the right size.  Thanks.  BTW  Looks GREAT

The stock rim is 5.5 inches wide. The 200/50-18 is a low profile tire and the bike sits a little lower than stock. When the weather gets better I will give a ride report.  :orange:  :2vrolijk_21:

The bead is about 1 1/2 inch (low profile) and the tire does not look narrow at all. It's fat!

What Metzler did you install, radial or bias, model# cause I couldn't find a 50 series profile on their site.

I will say it depends on how much one rides. The compound is very soft, so it may stick well, but will not last to long. :nixweiss:

The stock rim is 5.5 inches wide.

Where are you getting the info that the 18" Blade wheel is 5.5" wide? I looked at Blade Wheels and found them to be 5" wide for all touring models (H-D PN 41453-08A, 2009 Touring Models). Blade Install sheet is attached. Curious as I thought the stock SESG Agitator wheels were 5.5" as well, only to find out (from the H-D install sheet) that they are 5". Any info you can provide would be appreciated.

I would love to run a 200mm rear but according to Metzler the minimum rim width should be 5.5". Mounting it on a 5" rim would crown the center.

No?

a 180/55 on a 5" rim? they r truly stupid... i can't believe the tire manufacturer doesn't tell them 'u need to put this tire on a 5.5" rim'... no tire manufacturer will recommend a 180/55 on a 5" rim...

Sorry Matt, but that's exactly what Dunflop recommends for the D407 in 180/55 size.  See attachment.

The stock rear rim on the SERG is 5.0 x 18, per H-D and Dunflop.  Dunlop and Metzeler both recommend a 6.0 minimum for a 200 series tire.  In case anyone is measuring their rim and coming up with 5.5, you have to measure the inside width of the opening, not the outer edges.

Jerry

PS.   Any tire engineer worth his salt will tell you not to install a tire on an incorrect width rim, and also not to mix different types (bias and radial, for instance).  As I've mentioned before on this subject, do this mod at your own risk.

that dunlop chart looks like it was written by HD, probably was since thats all the dealer only tires... what i'm saying is that with a 5" rim, thats the only tire u will be able to put on, no other manufacturer will say a 180/55 should be put on a 5"...

Dunlop and Metzeler both recommend a 6.0 minimum for a 200 series tire.

Metzeler says it's ok to run a 200 on a 5.5" rim with the ME880 Radial... see attached.

That was what I always thought as well, but the Yamaha (Star) Raider comes with a bias-ply front and radial rear from the factory. Dunno why. As a rule I would not mix tire types unless that was what was installed as OEM (like the Raider).

True enough, the other tire companies tend to recommend at least a 5.5" rim for a 180 series tire.  Why do you think H-D and Dunflop went to the sizes they did?  They did it to try to lock customer's in to buying the H-D branded tires with no good alternatives.  One could assume they did this out of greed, but I'm sure they actually did it for nothing but commendable reasons.  The possible reasons just escape me at the moment, but I'm sure they have them. ???

Another point I find very interesting is (using the Metzeler fitment chart) that Metzeler states a "recommended" rim width of 5.5" -6.0", they also list a Maximum Width of 7.76", but do not list a minimum width? Their published measurements were taken on a 5.5" rim, they state you can flatten the tire by mounting it to a rim that is 2.26" wider than the test rim, yet it seems that mounting the same tire to a .5" narrower rim is verboten?

Just find that very odd is all.

Thoughts?

what they call "maximum width" is the actual width of the tire, not the rim width, thats the column to the left...
