09'SEUC OEM Dunlop's Front and Rear Cupping
« on: May 02, 2012, 09:16:30 PM »

On my 09' SEUC, I only have about 10,800 miles (I know have not got to ride much) on my original Dunlop's. I'm aware of the "Service Bulletin" on the front tires cupping but is there one for the rear tire. My Indy shop said rear is worse than front. Going to take to local HD as soon as I can, see what they will do. Have been reading some threads on which tires are being used on SEUC's. I know several have had tires replace by MOCO at no charge but that was within a year or two of 2009. Thoughts? Thanks.

**Update 5/19/12** Gave SM case number that I got last week from HD Customer Service. He took tread depth measurements and said would call MOCO Monday. Talked and acted like he will do all he can. Time will tell if he will really help or if he was just going thru the motions and going to blow smoke up my azz.

**Update 5/29/12** After giving local dealer a week and a half, today finally had to call local dealer service manager to get the results from him calling MOCO about my case number about cupping tires. After jumping thru and being wrapped in there "Red Tape" I got the answer that I expected all along. SM put it on MOCO tire not covered, not enough tread left (duh) it's cupping. His dealership "goodwill money" has been depleted since March. When I was talking to MOCO customer service it sounded like it was up to the dealer. He was full of excuses. He did offer to "sell" me tires at a 15% discount. "ha"  If you have a dealer that goes above and beyond in customer service, be very thankful.

If you call MoCo and tell them that the tires are not safe they will take call of it N/C.
I got a new front put on my 08' SERK last year for free.  They said all they have to hear is that it is a safety issue.  The lady at MoCo coached me through it.

Are your tires the original ones that came with your bike when new, you said original but just making sure?  I have never got close to 10K miles on a rear tire although the last one had 6,500 and had plenty of thread left but this one cupped bad so I replaced it.  I have 50K miles on my SERK and every front tire cupped usually near 10,000 miles, I'm guessing that the rubber compound has changed because only the last rear tire cupped.  Sure makes the bike handle like crap when they are both cupped.  I would try the suggestion on the safety issue, what do you have to loose.  The SM at the new dealership I now go to recommended that I switch to Metzlers next time.  He told me in all his years of being in the industry he has never seen the amount of cupped tires from any company, plus they are not cheap.  Since March of 08 I have had 9 front tires, one was a 407 that cupped at 4K, the next 407 was switched out to the 408 per the bulletin. I also had 2 replaced due to nails plus I hit a beam in the road which gave me a new wheel, tire, bearings, 3rd set of defective rotors.  The rest just cupped.  On the rear I believe I have had 9 tires installed, 2 with flats and the others just wore out very prematurely.  Sure glad I purchased the wheel & tire coverage.  I actually check my air pressure 2 to 3 times a week and adjust accordingly to being solo, 2-up and 2 up with gear.  I wrote the air pressures needed on a shelf along with my Bitubo settings for a quick & accurate reference.  That way I'm totally confident going into the first series of twisties when I leave my driveway in the country.  Having a system and sticking to it is a pain but I'm sure it has saved my can a time or two.

Good Luck

I do the same.....my trying to remember settings, air pressures, passwords, etc....well....gotta write them down. They are also in a file on my phone!

Good idea on the cell phone, will due it this weekend, I don't really have a bad memory I don't have one at all.  One thing I forgot to mention is to check your air gauge for accuracy/calibration.  I had an expensive one that was about 3-4 pounds off, and I used it for two seasons before someone suggested that I check them out.

What exactly does cupping look like? :nixweiss:  Can you look at the tire and notice it, or is it only something you feel in the steering  :-\

I don't have the ability to take a photo of one at this time but it is very easy to see on the tire.  You will notice raised and uneven sections throughout the tire.  Maybe scalloped is a better description.  Picture making a pure round tire with clay and then gently squeeze it along the total circumference, you will end up with a cupped tire.  The really bad ones can make it unsafe to ride, your cornering ability can be severely impacted.  Regardless of who is responsible for the cupping I won't allow my wife on the bike if I notice an issue.  I may be able to take a photo this weekend, If I do I will post one.

2010 SEUC and I had over 14,000 on original tires. I replaced them before taking an extended trip because I did not want to deal with tire shopping on the trip. I have no doubt the rear would have gone another two thousand before hitting wear bars and front probably another 3  --  4 thousand.  Don't know why you are going thru tires so often?

Yes, the tires are the ones that came on it when it was new. I will admit to not checking the air pressure as often as I should.

Rode bike to local stealer today. Did not even get the complete sentence out of my mouth that both tires are cupping, before SM told me I would have to call MOCO customer service, if they OK'd it I would get a reference number. I asked what about the "service bulletin" he said that had (expired)? I called and there hours are Monday-Friday. Will call them Monday. To be honest, I don't really feel any "vibration" when riding, the roads around here are needing paving so bad it is hard to judge. It does seem to take extra effort to hold a tight line in the curves.  :nixweiss:

On my 09' SEUC, I only have about 10,800 miles (I know have not got to ride much) on my original Dunlop's.

Both mine were replaced at almost exactly that mileage under warranty, no questions asked.

***UPDATE*** @ ***FYI***
Next Saturday June 9th gonna take a little ride to Georgia. I have a appointment to get some new Dunlops. Anyone around or willing to ride to Killer Creek HD Roswell Georgia. They are selling OEM tires for 33% off and with only $40.00 each to install! It's on there website. I first thought well they marked them way up then give 33% off but I don't think that is the case. The tires for my bike are front D408 msrp $198.00 sale price is $133.30. Rear D407 msrp $275.00 sale price $184.89. Pretty good savings on tires and mounting.

The plan was to leave this morning by 6:30am, only missed it by 15 min. on our way at 6:45 arrived at Killer Creek 8:45. All I can say is WOW! I was blaming the ride and handling on our crappy roads but now I know it was my cupped azz tires. So that was two new Dunlops,mounted/installed,tax for $431.13. We were on our way around 12:40. Everyone was friendly and very helpful.
