Title: Riding in the Texas heat question
Post by: roadrunner on June 27, 2018, 05:25:29 PM
Hello all!

Moved to the Austin area a couple of years ago from Maryland, where it never really got over the low 90' there in July and August.

The heat this year has started early with heat index around 108.

I installed the love jugs last year and they work great.

Are folks still riding in the heat out here?

I understand heat can be a big factor in engine component failure.

Cheers!

Absolutely, I throw on my ice vest and ride it like I stole.....until the ice melts, lol.

i'm not in texas, but right next door in la.  what a lot of folks do down this way is to ride early, stop in the early afternoon, and then continue on again later in the evening, if you're going far.  if staying local, end your ride for the day before lunch.

and i highly recommend a cupholder.  with a double walled insulated cup.  it'll stay fairly cool for quite a while, and i just top off with ice at rest/gas stops.

It's well over 100F every summer in the Sacramento valley, often over 115F....and has been at those temps several times this year already.

Here's a link to 8 pages that's going to cover just about every thing you need to know about riding in the heat.....

HEAT-OUT Cool'R under garments available at www.cyclegear.com (http://www.cyclegear.com)
Love mine. Got mine at 67% off in store a few years ago. Like them so much I went back for a second pair. They also have the vest liners that you soak in water.

Late to the post... but I had explained to my mechanic that I was planning a Summer ride to Texas (Abilene area) and he said to bring the bike in and he'd do some tweaks to the  TTS settings to help the bike run better in the constant 110+ temperatures.  I must say, whatever he did certainly did the trick.  The bike ran perfect, and never once gave me any signs it was getting too hot.

After I got back to Alaska, I just left the settings as they were (2012)... and the bike seems to had picked up a little pep in the cooler Alaska temps.  This is on an untouched 110, now with over 30K miles.

An article several years ago about riding in the heat was very good, wish I had a copy.  But the crux of the matter after they got done with all the charts and graphs was that above 93 degrees the wind is not your friend.  Basically a mesh jacket will help below 93 but above 93 the mesh is allowing the wind to reach your body adding to your heat load.  The trick is to limit the exposed skin to as little as possible.  Sounds crazy but it does work.

I've stopped trying to explain to people on the road why I have a leather jacket on at almost 100 degrees, but I do feel much better than the folks riding in a t-shirt; least while moving.
