Title: Weird Damage
Post by: Flashgorman on March 17, 2019, 04:04:38 PM
I have just over 1000 miles on my 2018. Took it to a shop for a quick look at stuff and noticed that the right side lower fairing speaker has this damage. I had a stage 1 and new pipes shortly after I bought it, but pictures of the bike show that there was no damage then. Can anyone think of what could cause this? Its been in my garage all winter, so not much riding and nothting goes near it, so no parts on the floor. Sitting on the bike, I have no reason to put a foot near there either Thoughts?

Possible rodent? if it wasn't there when you covered it up and now its there, that's what I would think?

If it wasn't like that before you put it away in the garage, and now it's damaged, a critter is a possibility.  However, I've never known rats or other rodents to be so neat when they chew on stuff.  Regardless of how it got that way, you will need a new speaker grille.  I looked it up on two online parts catalog sites and came up with this on both of them:

76000356     GRILLE ASSEMBLY (RIGHT)

Under the price column it just says "Call Us"    :nixweiss:

Thanks- yeah it's not covered so not a critter thing. And the way the grill is, it looks like this perfect arc of a cut. Just scratching my head. I'll let you know what they say when I call! (Probably they will be amazed at how inexpensive a part is for a Harley...)

I zoomed in on the closer of the two pix. Top right side looks like a rodent took to chewing on it. However, you stated you took it into the shop for a quick look at stuff. Was it like that before you took it in?

It looks like something is screwed in from the backside  and pressed into the outer trim ring of the speaker causing it to snap off. I see something like a bolt or screw with cracks on each side as though it was too long or over tightened.

Yes, can't tell if that's the end of a screw but it sure looks like one.  Note all the cracks, also note how smooth the bottom of the broken out section is.  Not chewed, and also doesn't look like a break at that point.  I think I'd let the dealer figure out how that screw or whatever it is managed to break the part, then replace it under warranty.
