Quiet to loud helmet.
« on: June 15, 2017, 01:15:31 PM »

So this is what I'm experiencing. I bought a shoei quest about 6years ago. Installed the comm system and found it to be very quiet. But now I can't believe how loud it has seemed to be. Even just tapping the shell makes it uncomfortable for my ears. I'm at the point where I'm wearing earplugs. I did start riding with an open helmet and didn't have this issue and wondering if a full face helmet resonates more sound because the noise has no where to go. Ive had a modular helmets but to heavy and noisy. Does anyone else have a possible solution for this?

6 years is a long time for a helmet. You have to remember that the construction materials, such as foam and comfort liner change over the years from the sweat and heat .It all plays a factor. In the life of the helmet.
This is likely why it sounds different. If you have the funds, it is a good excuse for an upgrade

5 year old helmet = scrap it. The interior has dried out and it will not protect nearly as good as new.

In six years, your helmet has gotten old and the insulation has likely broken down. Any packing in your mufflers has likely worn away too. You may have become more sensitive to noise as you've gotten older too.  Respectfully, you should have been wearing earplugs all along. Nearly all helmet manufacturers and all Otolaryngologists will tell you so.

Technology has also advanced. Klim (TK 1200) and Schuberth (C4 Pro) have modular helmets that weigh in around 1,300 grams. After a great deal of research, trial and error, I use "No Noise" earplugs with a Klim TK 1200 Illumino Hi-Viz Helmet with a J&M Headset. Very quiet. Not only does the music sound great but I can understand everyone one their CB when I'm on a Club Ride (Iron Spartans). Bonus: The Klim comes with a Transitions, photo-chromatic face shield and a Pinlock system.

Your helmet is old dude. Six years in the sun? Or have you given thought to having your ears checked, maybe a medical problem? Just sayin.

Thank guys for the info. Funds are not a problem and saving my hearing is priceless. Looks like I'm headed to my local cycle gear for a new helmet.

I've been waiting for the Schubert C4.  I like the idea of the integrated Sena headset.

But for around $1000 all in....it better be a dam good unit :nervous:

I'm a little partial to non-modular helmets. Was thinking of looking at the shoei GT-air. Any thoughts?

I have the Schuberth C3 Pro and use the Bose QuietComfort 20 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones.  It is amazingly quite.  I have always rode with ear plugs before this and with the Bose it is night and day.

Gt air is a good helmet. I was never one for internal drop down sun visors so that was a deal-breaker for me as I just wear my sunglasses.

I ended up with the RF 1200 and never looked back.

My only full-face helmet is the GT-Air Fireguy. I like it, it's quiet, fairly lightweight and allows good visibility. Was planning to buy a Shuberth, but the Shoeii fits my head better.

I don't.  I have always ridden solo :bigcry: and I don't like to talk on the phone when I drive.  I find that i can hear my music through my phone when I listen to it and don't have to crank it up like I do the HK unit.
