Burnt brake smell
« on: October 08, 2018, 10:05:50 PM »

Ok guys here is a new one on me. I pulled my 2013 CVO Ultra from one garage to the other to get it ready for the day's ride.....(about 100 feet). After I shut it down I noticed a "burnt Brake" type smell. I couldn't find the source so on we went. After around 50 miles of various speeds we stopped for lunch. When we headed back home we rode about 5 miles and came to a stop sign. When I left the stop I noticed the smell again for about 1 mile at 60mph, then it disappeared never to come back for the rest of the day. I just got through cleaning it from the ride and checked all the fluids (all good) and hand rotated the wheels with no major resistance. Anyone had this before....I am replacing and bleeding the brake fluid this weekend for the first time. I know the book says every 2 years.  Thanks for any input....

On the fluid change, if this is an ABS bike the dealer will change the fluid as part of a recall since the ABS valve needs to be actuated to do it correctly.

On the post, I was thinking that the pad was riding but you rotated the wheels and even that would not have caused a smell during the initial move you mentioned.  Possibly just something burning off the exhaust though.

Yes it has ABS but I think the recall was for certain years not my 13. That would have been nice....

I can't imagine a brake heating up in 100' at a slow speed. It has to be something "cooking".  Bet is doesn't happen again, well until something else gets caught in bike.

What he said^.  You wouldn't get a hot brake smell after rolling a hundred feet.  I'm guessing something got on the hottest part of the exhaust system, and once it burned off the smell went away.  If it was hidden by a heat shield, you wouldn't necessarily have been able to see it.  As long as it doesn't return, I'd just chalk it up to foreign material on the exhaust.
