Fault code decipher please
« on: March 23, 2019, 11:48:19 AM »

Hello

Help please.
2011 CVO ULTRA ROADGLIDE.

Engine management light comes on - first time out since new lifters and decoke/valve grind. Precautionary maintenance only.

The only other thing I did was put a bit more baffling into the monster ovals, not much restriction, still sounds ok, just took the edge off it.

I think I put all the electrics back where they came from, but I am also sure I can be wrong.

Bike runs ok, much as before, perhaps a little lumpy on tickover, but been riding a new M8 - hired for two weeks, so maybe my perception is a bit cloudy.

Followed grc's (Terry's) means of entry into the "Stored diagnostics Trouble Codes", he posted this some time ago (I have tried to copy and attach to this post what grc posted elsewhere), via the odometer button. The screen I refer to is the odometer screen. The button is the odometer button.

I did this a few years ago and some of the "faults" still show up, I have left these in plain text. The new "fault" code, which are the ones I really need information about, are emphasised in bold.

Help would be much appreciated

Here's what I get:

1) Hold button in at same time turn on ignition, this appears:  diAG
2) Press the button this appears: PSSPtb
3) P flashes, hold button in, this appears: P0118.
4) Single click: "End" appears
5) Single click: scrolling across the screen; Pn-31871-11 appears
6) single click on the button: back to PSSPtb
7) single click gets S flashing, hold the button in, this appears: nonE
Not sure why this character appears here, text written is the number eight. 8) Another single click, this scrolls across the screen: Pn 68924-07
9) single click on the button: back to PSSPtb
10) single click gets SP flashing, hold the button in, this appears: nonE
11) another single click this scrolls across the screen: Pn 70733-10
12) single click on the button: back to PSSPtb
13) single click gets t flashing, hold the button in, this appears: nonE
14)another single click this scrolls across the screen: Pn 74740-10
15) single click on the button: back to PSSPtb
16) single click gets b flashing, hold the button in, this appears: c1216
17) single click this comes up on the screen:  End

Could someone help by deciphering the above please. Does the above actually identify a fault, if so what is the remedy.

Thanks
JohnT

P0118 = Engine temp sensor signal voltage high/ open
C1216 = Rear Brake switch open
I would disconnect each and look at the pins and be sure the rubber seal is seated deep in the socket  than reconnect. Sometime a little
vasolin will help ensure the connector goes all the way on the sensor or switch

Hi John,

In that list above you have two Diagnostic Trouble Codes shown in red.  The entries that start with PN are the part numbers of the module responsible for those codes.  Depending on the model and year those might include the ECM, the BCM, and the ABS module.

P0118 is a code for the engine temperature sensor open or high.  This is a sensor screwed into the left rear of the front cylinder head that reports the head temp to the ECM.  In many cases this code isn't caused by the actual sensor but rather a bad connection or even a break in the wire to that sensor.

The C1216 code relates to the rear brake switch being open.  Check your rear brake light operation with the brake pedal.  The switch is a pressure switch that's screwed into the rear brake line that goes to the ABS module from the rear master cylinder, and there were a lot of failures and even a recall if I remember correctly.

Jerry.

The engine temperature sensor plug was not fully connected, obviously by me when I put it all back together, it is now connected properly and the engine management light has gone out.

Regarding the brake light switch, it works the brake lights ok, but the fault code remains. Does this mean the switch is still somehow faulty do you know, or do I need to look elsewhere. As it is it is not a problem because the light and brake work, but if it is a fault somewhere and I can find and fix I will do so.

Again thanks for the help.

Did you clear the code? It will remain stored as a historical fault until cleared. Try clearing it then see if it reappears.

Follow the same procedure you used before to read the codes.  When you come to the code you want to clear, press and hold the odometer reset button until CLR shows on the display.

"NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' is displayed. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Perform a road test then shut your bike down. Recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 7. If the code is current it will reappear. Historic DTCs are stored for 50 ignition cycles before cleared. The security lamp will only indicate the existence of historic DTCs for two ignition cycles."
