HD VIN
« on: February 24, 2009, 01:16:51 AM »

Anyone know the significance of the last 6 numbers of the Vin?  I know that it's a serial number, and mine is/will be 953083.  Is there a way to decipher this to determine date of manufacture?

Don't think so, Ed. I think it's just a sequential number and nothing more... but i could be wrong...

That's what I figured, but it seems an odd number.  I'm assuming that it doesn't reset every model year, seeing as it is approaching a million!

Good questing. I dunno the answer to that one. There is a digit at the beginning of the VIN that specifies the year model, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the six-digit serial number starts over at 000001 every year. It can't if it's up to almost a million now. They don't make that many bikes in one year...

Your bike will ship to the dealer with a build sheet which will have the bike's build date on it.  It will have a line that looks like:

FRI 0006   07 2007 - Built Friday, The 6th day of July 2007 in my case.

You should be able to get a copy from them when you take delivery.  My dealer gives it to you without asking.

I have the "Birth Certificate" for my 98 RK and 04 SEEG, but when we asked for it with Candy's bike, they looked at us like we were crazy. They appeared to have never heard of such a thing. Not an all so important piece, but nice to have.  :2vrolijk_21:

Wow Jamey,  that's wierd... I know they still had them for '08s.  I can verify for '09s when I get to my dealer later this week.

Good to know.  Didn't remember getting that for my '06 Heritage.

I didn't get the build sheet when I picked up my SERG. I went by the dealership today for a few minutes and asked the GM and the Service Manager about the build sheet. They got puzzled looks on their faces and said they had no idea what I was talking about. Mentioned something about a sticker on the back of the saddlebag... which wasn't on my bike when I got it. Hmmmm...

In '08 when I last did the tour of the main plant, every bike had one attached to it in a clear plastic sleeve.  As you can see from the attached PDF file it has a barcode which they can scan to verify what parts it's supposed to get.  I've been in the shop at my dealer when they receive these bikes and this paper is with the bike.  don't know if they're still doing it for '09 but my '08 and my wife's '07 Street Bob both came with it.
