Shifter Shaft Seal Leak
« on: September 09, 2009, 10:00:32 PM »

This time it's on the Purple Bike, and technically, it isn't a leak....yet.  Isn't dripping anywhere.  Just gets really grimy under there after riding for awhile.  Actually it has been seeping for quite awhile, better than 2000 miles.  I was thinking (hoping) this past weekend's trip to visit Ken and Cheri would do it in, and it would finally start dripping, which would undoubtedly win approval from the House Finance Committee to tear down, replace the seal, along with other seals and gaskets with Cometics, and since it would be torn down that far, may as well go ahead and replace the stock 5 speed with a Baker OD6.  The Finance Committee is learned in these processes and will not fund component replacements unless the cause significantly warrants such action and replacement procedures involve labor which would have to be repeated once the new transmission becomes necessary.....despite my pleas.

It's only a matter of time.   :huepfenlol2:

Talk to Jim (HD-Dude).  Both my bikes had that same seepage.  We replaced the HD seal with Cometics and the problem has not occurred again.

Fellows, Henry wants a 6 speed.  Renea said no thus far.   I would be pouring some fluid under the green melon and once she sees the fluid on their clean garage floor, she will give the ok..   Just sayin'..        :cherry:

Bob I think the leak is in the Purple King

Henry could just send me the 2.5G and then he wouldn't need a 6 speed :coolblue:

Thanks guys.  I've given fleeting thought to such covert actions as using a small 90 degree scratch awl to help speed the leaking process, but I'm afraid my integrity would get in the way.  Besides, Renea sees right through my bullchit anyway.  Sure do wish it would start leaking.......and the sooner, the better.  I've become quite accustomed to the Baker OD6 in the Green Bike.  That is one sweet transmission.  I just hope she lets me switch the Purple Bike's primary gearing to 3.37 like the Green Bike.  The added torque is awesome.  80mph at 3000rpm in sixth gear is the perfect operating condition for me.  Really like that combination.

But for now.....I'll just ride it.....and keep trying to hit that sixth gear.......that just isn't there.   :huepfenlol2:

80 @ 3000rpm is what my 09 SEUC does.
It's a real sweet spot.

Give it time Henry.
It will come when it's time.

That's true, Chip.  Maybe a few heat cycles in cold weather will wear it down.  No doubt the seal is eight years old since the bike is an August 2001 build.  Just under 17K miles.  It'll bust this winter when Rod is super busy with other stuff.  It'll get done tho'.   :2vrolijk_21:

If a guy can justify a new transmission because of a $10 oil seal, why couldn't I justify a new engine because of fouled plugs?
