Just bought a new 2010 Roadglide,my question is the gearing feels different in my RG compared to my 07 springer
did they change the gearing?

The final drive ratio on the touring models was lowered from 2.79:1 to 2.87:1 in the 2009 model year by replacing the 66 tooth rear pulley with a 68 tooth pulley. The results were improved acceleration and a 6th gear range that was more usable at legal speeds.

Rear belt is new 140T. The rear pulley will not work on an '07 wheel. The IDS on 09+ FLH models is integrated into the hub. I no longer have my '07 parts manual, but IIRC the '07 Japan model had a 68T rear pulley and a 139T belt. Changing to those parts should get you the same final drive.

  Your comment relative to the (usability) of 6th gear,  I would agree with.   "getting it right" (overall),  I disagree.   Having had a 2001 RK Classic,  with a final drive of 3.37,  it pulled a lot better on the low end.   I wish my 850 pound plus Ultra SE had that gearing.

My only gripe with the 'o1 gearing was a (lack of) another gear to go to on the open road.   A sixth gear fixed that problem,  but they had to fu** with it and now the lower gears are NOT as low as I would like.

After some additional research I learned that the Japan HDI rear pulley is actually a 64T and provides a final drive ratio 2.70. Talk about tall gearing!

But wait, there's more - You can change the front 32T pulley to a 31T for a 2.88 final drive ratio using the stock belt. That's pretty darn close to the 2.875 gearing of the '09+ FLH models.

I changed my '07 front 32T to a 30T for a final drive of 2.97, but had to use the HDI Japan belt (PN: 40056-07).  That bike had a Zipper's 120" motor and was scary fast!

Thanks Jeff! I'm thinkin 31T w/no belt change as the way to go. Still keep all the same comp components. Can even try that cush drive I picked up. I see no downside to this except maybe giving up a lil top end. I guess no more 140. Prolly only 135 now!!!

BTW Jeff, the highway peg mount I have is for a 4-speed frame, not FXR. Sorry man!

I just went through using the EVO Industries 30t w/o comp ass. That for me was to low and vibration unbearable. So now have the 34t SE comp ass. like the new bikes but that gave me 5mph higher which is ok but I swear my stock one was 32t and was just right gear wise. I am not ready to tear it down again just yet so curious to see how it turns out for Howie.

JW- Here are some calculations to compare. All are done using the 66T rear pulley and a rear tire diameter of 25.38". To avoid lugging the motor under 2k RPMs, 55 MPH is the lowest speed to use 6th gear with any of the available pulleys. Pick your cruise speed and determine your desired RPM.


32T = 2032 RPM @ 55 MPH
31T = 2098 RPM @ 55 MPH
30T = 2168 RPM @ 55 MPH

32T = 2402 RPM @ 65 MPH
31T = 2479 RPM @ 65 MPH
30T = 2562 RPM @ 65 MPH

32T = 2771 RPM @ 75 MPH

Problem as someone said earlier in this post........(No comp) with the Evo Indust.  30T gear and thus the extra vibes, etc.   I have one but have not installed it due to comments like that one.

Not sure what to do,   lot of $$ to spend for only less than 7% gain.

Although it may not seem like much on paper, my experience is that a 7% change to the final drive ratio is significant. The 3.37 you mention was likely mated to either an OD 6-speed or a 5-speed where you would be searching for another gear on the highway. A 3.37 with the 6-speed Cruise Drive will still leave you searching for another gear at highway speeds. With the exception of 1st gear, I think the 09+ FLH gearing is perfect.  A couple of mods and a good tune provide more than enough TQ for 6th gear use from 55+.

Black Diamond......I'm about to have them re-do the "tune"...........The asst. Serv Mgr just told me that the whole crew recently got the latest training on the super tuner and software and that I should bring the bike back in for a "freebie" tuneup.

So,  we will see how that goes.

I'm still debating (in my head) which to go with 30 - 31T. Rode the 02 for 100 miles yesterday on back two lanes. Got her to 75 for some short runs. She was in the area of 3200 best I could tell from that lil bit tach and my old eyes. LOL

That's about right for the 5-speed Jeff. 70 is usually around 3 grand. That's why I'm going for the 31T. The 30T will bring it closer to that 5-speed  gearing, if that's what you like. I'm just looking to bring it to around 75 in 6th gear at 3 grand, instead of 80. And no belt change required for the 31T either.

Going to Baker will ensure you get the correct pulley. When I did the 07, with the 30T, I got it direct from Baker.

Hey.........I'm trying to (revive) this thread for some updates.  Has anyone completed the move to a 30T trans. sprocket and if so,  (A new belt with what part number and/or how many teeth)

How do ya like it and did you have to go with the dakota digital thingie to re-adjust the speedo readings..........ALSO (very important to me),  Assuming you have Cruise control,  did it still work OK after the change.   And finally,  (of very little importance to me, but curious) did it knock out your 6th gear (lite)..........which is mostly unreadable during daylite anyway.

I'm finally about ready to make the above changes myself IF I can get some validation that the potential (downside concerns) listed above were not a factor.

I did the Andrews 30T in Lexi, my 08 SERK. This was a great mod. All the gears are much more usable. I can now use 6th gear sooner and I don't bog down if traffic slows a little. My speedo is off about 3 -5 mph but I can use 6th @ 65 mph and not feel like I'm dogging the motor. I'm happy with the change.

The part number on for the new belt is 40371-07. Sorry, I can't recall the tooth count off the top of my head.

I have the Dakota SIM but have not installed it, yet. I'll get to it next week and let you know.

Of course I had a chrome inner primary installed during this mod!

Well I've decided not to install the Dakota SIM in my 08 SERK. Looking it over, it appears I would have to hard wire it into the ECM. With the prior electrical problems I've had with this scooter, no thanks on cutting wires.

If anyone has figured a way to make this a plug and play add on, let me know. If not, anyone looking for one of these get a hold of me. The Drag dealer I got it from went belly up. Drag says they will not accept it back direct from me. They are considering allowing another DS dealer to handle the deal. 

Does the Mastertune TTS have the ability to adjust the speedo? I thought I heard that?

All you have to do is change the speedo cal value in the smartlink four software from 42000 to 39375 and presto the speedometer is accurate and the 6 gear indicator light works. The more i learn about the Thundermax the more I will never buy anything else. Zippers has an excell program they will e-mail to you for free that will calculate for you any combo you can muster up. i just changed cams and increased my displacement to 117 threw in some bigger injectors etc. and loaded a base map that wasn't all that close to my setup and it purrs. If i had some of the dyno tune money I have spent in the past i could retire. Anyway i'm running amuck and am offtopic,good riding to all.

Your only talking about 200 rpm difference from the 32 to the 30. But taking off in first is easier and stop and go traffic i don't have to work the clutch as much to maintain slow speeds. Shifting out of fifth gear into 6th at 105 mph is easily achieved with the 32 tooth trans pulley, and hopefully the 30 will slow me down a little!!
