Ok guys here is the easy fix using Windows Media Player 

Name your device click finish
Click on SYNC
Click on the name you gave your SD memory card   
Click on advanced options
Un check- Create folder hierarchy on device click Apply then click OK
Creat Sync list then click Start Sync.

That's it worked like a charm!

Glad you got it figured out!  Those players work well and beat the snot out of a single-disc CD player, but they can certainly be a bit quirky in way (as you have seen) and not having direct access functionality is a major PITA at times, especially with larger cards.  I'm looking forward to replacing mine with a Zumo next season, hoping its built-in MP3 player is a little more user-friendly.
