Gearing change in the Baker
« on: March 26, 2010, 10:48:16 PM »

Some of you know I put a Baker DD6 in the bike last year.
The DD6 gives an approximate RPM drop of 400 compared to stock in high gear.

Like the factory gear set I always found myself "hunting" for a gear change, mostly on the back roads, in town and in areas like the Dragon.

The Baker comes with a 28T comp sprocket. Optionally available is a 27 tooth.
This one tooth reduction changes the RPM drop to about 200.

But, it lowers the overall effective gear ratio.

I like it!

28T sprocket with the HD auto adjuster.
Baker recommends against using the auto adjuster but could give me no valid reason as to why.

So I left it in there. Wear on the shoe looks to be about the same as the original adjuster I took out 2 years ago - it looks good.

The Baker sprockets are larger in diameter then stock will allow the sprocket to be removed without removing the clutch drum  :2vrolijk_21:

The Baker DD6 gear set has an externally adjustable "shift center".

There is a set procedure for this which involves removing the inner primary.

I needed to make a minor adjustment to mine (had trouble downshifting).
I was able to get an 11/16" wrench and the Allen wrench down between the primary and trans case, even with the "stealth" chrome cover.

Made my adjustment in 10 minutes.

Looking down

The red arrow points to the Allen wrench, the yellow line is the 11/16" wrench

Just to add a little drama - when filling the primary the funnel was brittle and snapped off inside the cover.

Of course the pieces were easy to grab with some skinny needle nose pliers

the first 2 pieces anyway - the other 2 required pulling the cover back off.....................

Duane, there is drama and then there is DRAMA.  Funnel has to be a whole lot better to break than a tranny case.  Glad you like the gearing change.  It's nice to get them really dialed in and feeling right.

I forgot about that until you brought it up......................

Yep your right - I'll take a broken funnel any day.

As for the gearing - now I really like it - more oomph off the line and a bit more fun going through the gears. I'm guessing the overall ratio is now similar to what these bikes had before the change.
And I dont think I will miss the 200 rpm top end change. Really don't ride fast enough around here. Besides, 200 RPM drop is still good  :2vrolijk_21:
