Question on Baker Primary Mainshaft Bearing and Seal
« on: October 17, 2010, 09:10:55 PM »

Was asked this earlier and don't know the answer.  So passing it publicly to get an answer should anyone know for sure.

Does anyone know if the seal is different when using the Baker bearing?

My hunch is yes.  But I honestly don't know for sure so don't dare say.

The race used with the stock bearing is longer than the width of the inner bearing.  The seal in the primary is of course right next to the bearing.  So I'd not be surprised to be told the stock seal seals against the race rather than the shaft itself.  That would mean the seal packaged with the Baker bearing has a smaller ID.  But that's all just guess.

Anyone know for sure?

Yes, different seal. It has the ID the same as the trans output shaft. The OEM seal ID is larger to match the inner bearing race that is pressed onto the shaft.

Thanks Jim.  I was guessing the stock seal sealed against the race rather than the shaft.

I've got one of these bearings in the red bike (race walked)  Will also have one in the SERK project when it gets that far as it'll push the limit when the races seem to walk.  But when installing in the red bike all I did was put the parts in.  Never thought to look at the seals side by side.

Will pass the info along.  Think I'll also call Baker and get a spare seal to keep in the drawer since it's not something could just ride down to the dealership and grab.

:2vrolijk_21: I use the baker bearing in almost all bikes when the primary is off and there is any sign of movement of the race. (it happens ALOT). I keep the seals for them in stock if you need as well.

Now I just wish Baker would come out with the bearing for the 08+ bikes.......

In the red bike the race hadn't moved enough to eat a seal when I caught it.  But it had moved.  Didn't know about the bearing when I put the six speed in that bike but ordered one later to have on hand for next time it was apart.  It's in the high one-teens so I wasn't surprised it had moved.

The SERG got the Baker bearing when it was apart for the six speed.  One of those "just because it was apart" changes.  Since eventually three of those bearings/seals will be in service here a spare seal in the drawer is worthwhile.  Since you've got them check your PMs Jim.  Thanks.

Don I have one of them in each bike.

After installing one in Kathys bike I heard that S&S made one and started rethinking what I had done. Bessie has 8k in it since I installed the seal and when I pulled the primary the other day it looked fine....worried a little about the seal grooving the output shaft.

Jim check your PM  as I need some seals on hand with them in 3 bikes

I'd had a passing thought about eventually grooving the shaft also Brian.  But modern seals are good about being easy on the surfaces they seal.  So we'll only have to worry about many many many miles down the road.

Going to get seals from Jim anyway.  But if you've got a local bearing and seal shop that's good the dimensions of the seal we need are 25x52x7 according to the tech rep at Baker this morning.  Probably an elastomer coated viton seal but a nitrile piece should hold up fine if that's all that was found.

Yeah..... thought of that after the suggestion to look for something local.  That's tough to do when local gets you feet-wet....

I didn't screw with looking locally either.  Jim is sending me a couple.  Thought they'd be one spare for me and one for the local guy's bike that's leaking that started this conversation.  Found out over lunch that he's an impatient ass though.  He ordered a seal overnight from Baker.

Asked how much that was going to help when we weren't going to work on it until this Friday night.  Oh well.....  :drink:

Brian - didn't I already give you a couple of seals?

Jim - have you ever had one of the baker bearings not be finished honed?

Mine missed the QC check. Good thing I tried it on the shaft before putting it in the cover and trying to put that cover on

Never had a problem with them fitting. Have done into the hundreds.

The bearings are standard part that Baker hones to fit the main shaft.
Normally not something the end consumer would know  :nixweiss:
